Triumph Scrambler 400 X
The Triumph Scrambler 400 X is based on the same platform as the Speed 400 but feels like a noticeably different motorcycle. It gets a 19-inch front wheel, longer travel suspension, and a taller 835mm seat height, which give it a bigger, more commanding feel on the road. The motorcycle is powered by the same 349cc single-cylinder unit that generates 37hp and 32Nm, and is paired with a six-speed gearbox. The engine performs well, accelerating from 0-100kph in 6.92 seconds while returning 28.07kpl in the city.
The Scrambler 400 X's wider handlebar and more relaxed footpeg position make it comfortable, whereas its 195mm of ground clearance helps it handle broken roads and light-trails with ease. While this is a bike that can take you pretty far down the average trail, it’s not a bike that you should take too seriously as an off-roader.

Triumph Scrambler 400 X FAQs
It can be tricky. The Triumph Scrambler 400 X seat height is 835mm, therefore short riders around 5'7" might find themselves on their tiptoes.
If you want a taller riding position and a bike that can handle more than just city roads, yes. If you mostly ride in the city, the Speed 400 makes more sense.
No. The motorcycle can handle gravel roads, dirt tracks, and mild trails confidently, but it is not a dedicated off-road motorcycle.
The Triumph Scrambler 400 X requires servicing every 12 months or 16,000km, whichever comes first.
Questions you may find useful
I'm planning to buy my first premium motorcycle and have a budget of around Rs. 3.1 lakh on-road. After a lot of research and multiple test rides, I've narrowed my options down to the Triumph Tracker 400 and the Triumph Scrambler 400 X. I'm looking for advice from owners or experienced riders who have spent time with either or both bikes. I've been riding motorcycles for around 7-8 years and this bike will be my primary motorcycle for at least the next 4-5 years. My usage will be approximately 70-80% city commuting to office and 20-30% rides during weekend with occasional long-distance trips of more than 250 km every 2-3 months. I will almost always have a pillion with me, so pillion comfort, suspension, and overall ride quality are very important factors. I enjoy riding but I'm not someone who rides aggressively all the time. I appreciate a refined, confidence-inspiring motorcycle that is also enjoyable on open highways. I'll be paying the full amount in cash so I'm looking for the best overall ownership experience rather than simply the cheapest option. During my test rides, the Tracker 400 felt lighter, more road-focused, and easier to ride in the city. It had a cowl so didn't get to check it with the pillion. The Scrambler 400 X engine felt somewhat the same but just a little toned down and not as aggresive as the Tracker given the higher power produced and better suspension. However, the braking was not as expected. My main concerns are related to finding more suitable bike for someone who rides mostly in the city but enjoys weekend touring. Which bike is more comfortable for both rider and pillion on longer rides? Does the Scrambler's taller suspension and larger front wheel become a disadvantage in daily city riding? Is the Tracker significantly easier to live with in traffic? Considering the fact that I'll own the bike for 4-5 years, which one offers the better overall ownership experience? I'd really appreciate insights from owners, especially those who have ridden both motorcycles or regularly ride with a pillion. Thanks in advance!
For your usage, where you regularly ride with a pillion both usually inside the city and occassionally on the highway, the Triumph Scrambler 400 X is the better option than its sibling, the Tracker. The Scrambler has a far more upright and commanding rider's triangle, is more spacious for both rider and pillion and its suspension comfort is also much better than the Tracker. Coming to the braking issue on the Scrambler, Triumph (not Bajaj) insists on equipping the bike with organic brake pads which don't have the same life or power as sintered units but its an easy fix. You can fit the sintered pads from any other 350cc Triumph onto the Scrambler and this will be an inexpensive and easy fix to your problem.
Which bike should I choose between the Triumph Scrambler 400 X and the Harley-Davidson X440? I'm 6 feet tall and need a comfortable, easy-to-ride motorcycle for daily commuting in Pune's traffic and pothole-ridden roads, with occasional weekend rides. My budget is under Rs. 4 lakh on-road, and I plan to keep the bike for 7+ years. My priorities are: Rider and pillion comfort Excellent suspension Easy city manoeuvrability Reliability and low maintenance Good fuel efficiency Premium fit, finish, and road presence Based on these requirements, which bike would you recommend and why? Please compare their comfort, suspension, traffic-friendliness, pillion comfort, mileage, maintenance, and long-term ownership experience. Also, suggest any better alternatives under Rs. 4 lakh on-road.
Both the 350cc Triumph Scrambler 400 X and Harley-Davidson X440 are very good candidates for your next purchase, but they are quite different machines underneath. The H-D X440 is a relaxed roadster with a smooth, characterful long-stroke single-cylinder engine which has a good dose of low and mid-range torque. Despite its weight, the X440 is a manageable and comfortable machine inside the city and is planted and stable on the highway. If you can, make the stretch to the X440 T because not only does it look better, its finish levels are also much higher. On the highway, cruising at 100-110kph, the X440 is relaxed and vibe-free, although this is not a sporty machine. In fact, the Scrambler 400 X will be much sportier in its overall handling despite having decent off-road capability. Its liquid-cooled engine is more powerful, but you will need to rev it to make quick progress. The Scrambler also has good seating and ride comfort, although its pillion seat is on the smaller side. Take a test ride of both since they are such different machines before you make your decision.
Hi Autocar team - I’m deciding between the 2025 Bajaj Dominar 400 and the Triumph Scrambler 400 X. I’m 6 ft tall and find the Dominar more comfortable for my height, but I’d like to know which bike is more reliable in the long run and easier to maintain. My budget is around ₹2.5 lakh, so value for money matters. Also, why hasn’t Autocar published a proper review of the 2025 Dominar 400 yet? I’d appreciate your advice.
Both the Bajaj Dominar 400 and Triumph Scrambler 400 X are reasonably reliable and hassle-free machines, and considering they are both made by Bajaj, they should be light on the wallet in terms of maintenance. We recommend choosing the one you are more comfortable with and the one that has a service centre close to you. Coming to why we haven't reviewed the 2025 Dominar 400, that's because the bike is mechanically the same as when we reviewed it last in 2021, and the only tangible difference is the new LCD borrowed from the Pulsar NS400Z.
Between the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 and the Triumph Scrambler 400 X, which is better for daily rides and touring?
As an all-rounder, the Triumph Scrambler 400 X makes more sense because it has a commanding riding position, great suspension comfort, and lovely city manners. However, it feels a bit breathless on the highway beyond 100 kph, so if you don’t ride past that speed often, it’s a great option. On the other hand, the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 is a more engaging bike with better handling on twisty roads due to its wider tyres and 17-inch front wheel. It also feels more at home when doing fast highway speeds.
Please reply, Autocar. I am planning to upgrade from Hunter 350. I have shortlisted three bikes: the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450, Triumph Speed 400, and Triumph Scrambler 400 X (though I’m concerned about its height). My height is 5'3 tall with an inseam of 28. I planned for ADV, but due to a lack of confidence with height, I am not sure whether it would be the right choice. So, I request you to give me practical advice. My budget is ₹3.3 lakh.
Since you haven't specified what sort of riding you're planning to do, it will be a little difficult to guide you accurately. In our experience, the Triumph Speed 400 is a lovely city bike and can comfortably go on the highway too, as long as you don't cross 110kph.The Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 is also a credible option with good versatility, but its suspension can feel a little stiffer initially. We recommend a thorough test ride of both of these before you choose. The Triumph Scrambler 400 X will feel quite tall, and if you're not confident, stick to the other two approachable roadsters.
