I currently drive a Tata Nexon and am planning to upgrade to a seven-seater. I have shortlisted the Skoda Kodiaq Sportline and Jeep Meridian Trail AT, but am confused about which one to finalise. I need expert advice on this. You may suggest any other seven-seater as well, except the Innova HyCross.

There's a dearth of seven-seater SUVs available in the Rs 35-50 lakh price bracket, with the only options being Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian, MG Gloster, and Toyota Fortuner. Out of these, the Kodiaq feels the most sophisticated and the most car-like; however, space for adults in the third row is tight, and is best used as a seven-seater for short distance, occasionally.
The Jeep Meridian's third row space is no better, and overall, it doesn't feel as polished as the Kodiaq, hence the Skoda is the better bet.

But if your objective is to travel with six or seven adults often, consider the MG Gloster and Toyota Fortuner, which are more spacious than the Skoda and Jeep. The Gloster has an edge over the Fortuner in terms of a more upmarket interior and better refinement.

I am planning to buy a Toyota Fortuner, but I am confused between buying a new one or a used one. My yearly running is around 10–15,000 km. I am considering the petrol version instead of diesel since my running is low, and being in Delhi, the petrol model will have a 5-year longer registration life. Is it worth buying a second-hand Fortuner, since I may save ₹12–15 lakh? Also, is choosing petrol a good decision, or would diesel be wiser?

The Toyota Fortuner commands a strong resale value, so used examples might not be available at mouth-watering rates. That said, since most buyers prefer a diesel Fortuner, if you are getting a 2-3 year old petrol immaculate example for a considerable discount compared to a new one, it might be worth considering.
That way, you are not only saving yourself from that initial depreciation, but, like you mentioned, you can hold on to it for longer in Delhi too. You will appreciate this 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine's smoothness and drivability; however, be prepared for low single-digit fuel efficiency.

My budget is Rs 60-80 lakh. I currently own a 2019 Harrier. The Fortuner seems like the most viable option right now, but its interiors feel outdated. Does it make sense to wait for upcoming models, such as the Hyundai Palisade or Santa Fe? Are there any other options?

The Hyundai Palisade is still a while away, and there is no official confirmation of its arrival in India. The Toyota Fortuner, while reliable, has a dated interior; therefore, the best option for you would be the Skoda Kodiaq.
This Skoda car has premium interiors, a strong powertrain, feels upmarket, and is worth the price. It is a well-equipped SUV with lots of practicality and fantastic value in comparison to the luxury brands.

I want a 7-seater SUV with maximum ground clearance, rear-wheel drive (or AWD), a diesel engine, and an automatic transmission. Good mileage is important. My budget is ₹30-35 lakh (can stretch slightly). I live in Kashmir, so the car must handle occasional snow. Please suggest suitable models.

For your requirements and budget, the best option is the Jeep Meridian. It's got good ground clearance, a decently frugal diesel engine, a smooth automatic gearbox and AWD. It also has a very luxurious interior, a strong equipment list and the premium Jeep badge and its associated off-road pedigree. Bear in mind, however, that the third row of seats is not very spacious, but good enough for occasional use. Alternatively, you could move down a step to the Mahindra Scorpio-N, but its third row is also very cramped. And finally, you could move up to a Toyota Fortuner, which has a spacious third row, but its price is well past the Rs 40 lakh mark for the diesel automatic variants.

I’m planning to buy a diesel 4×4 or AWD car with a budget of up to ₹50 lakh. I prefer the Jeep Meridian Overland 4×4 - is it a good choice? Are there other diesel options I should consider?

While the Jeep Meridian will comfortably fit in your budget, the Toyota Fortuner is a better SUV. Yes, the interior is dated, and it is expensive, but it holds its value very well and has an exceptionally reliable engine. It is also more capable off the tarmac, and the new Neodrive variant is slightly more efficient as well.

I'm torn between the Toyota Hilux and the Fortuner. Most of my driving is within the city or on highways, but the substantial discounts on the Hilux make it an appealing option. My primary concerns with the Hilux are: 1. Uncomfortable rear seats 2. Leaf spring suspension at the rear 3. A turning radius of 5.4 meters 4. High cost of accessories Given these factors, would it be more prudent to opt for the Fortuner, or is the Hilux still a viable choice despite these drawbacks?

Rationally, the Toyota Fortuner is the better choice between the two. It has a smaller turning radius, 580 cm versus the Hilux’s 640 cm, and its 4.7-meter length is shorter than the Hilux’s 5.3 meters, making it easier to park and manoeuvre in city conditions. The rear seatbacks are a bit upright and do not recline, and the car seats only five.
In contrast, the Hilux’s cargo bed is open, so luggage isn’t protected from the environment or theft if you stop, for example, for a meal. The Toyota Hilux makes sense only if you genuinely need to transport cargo or how much you want to give in to your heart, as it does have a cool and unique image.

I'm considering replacing my 2013 Jeep Compass with a new vehicle and had initially shortlisted the Toyota Innova HyCross ZX variant. However, following recent GST reforms, the price gap between the HyCross and the Fortuner 4x2 AT has narrowed to approximately ₹3-3.5 lakh. Given the minimal price difference and the fact that both vehicles offer similar features, I'm finding it challenging to decide between the two. My daily driving involves moderately rough roads, not extreme, but not ideal either. The Innova HyCross can manage these conditions. Please advise.

The Toyota Innova HyCross offers ample ground clearance to handle moderately rough roads with ease. While the Toyota Fortuner is undeniably more rugged and feels almost indestructible in tougher conditions, there are a few factors worth considering.
The HyCross is easier to drive, provides superior ride comfort, and serves as a better seven-seater overall. Its hybrid powertrain also delivers significantly higher fuel efficiency.
Unless you specifically require the toughness of a ladder-frame SUV, the Innova HyCross remains the more practical and comfortable choice for everyday driving.
