Please advise me on choosing the best petrol automatic car within a ₹13-14 lakh on-road budget in Bangalore for a family of four. My driving is evenly split between city and highway use. I have shortlisted the Maruti Brezza AT, Skoda Kylaq or Mahindra XUV 3XO AT, and Hyundai Venue DCT. While the Brezza seems practical, I am concerned about its driving engagement. The Kylaq and 3XO raise doubts around mileage and long-term reliability, and the Venue DCT makes me unsure about gearbox reliability and turbo efficiency in Bangalore traffic. Is the Brezza’s driving experience truly disappointing for someone who enjoys driving?

All the models you have shortlisted have their highlights and weaknesses. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza is a well-rounded vehicle that excels in space and comfort. Maruti's service network is a huge plus in its own right. However, as you rightly identified, the Brezza is not exciting to drive. This Maruti Suzuki car's performance is fine in city driving conditions, and it will cruise comfortably on the highway. But the engine lacks punch in case that's important to you. 

If strong performance and good handling are requirements, the Skoda Kylaq and Mahindra XUV 3XO are the ones to be most interested in. Both models are good to drive, but fuel economy could be a concern in bumper-to-bumper city driving. 

We feel you will find a good balance in the Hyundai Venue 1.0 Turbo DCT. The engine is strong enough, and the gearshifts are also nice and quick. DCTs do tend to fumble at low speeds and aren't as smooth as torque converter autos. Although, it's not really an issue and surely not to the extent of avoiding the gearbox type altogether. 

Fuel economy should also be better than what you'd get with a torque converter.  The new Venue is also quite a wholesome package. The cabin is quite spacious, and the material quality is impressive.

Suggest a family car for five members with good rear seat comfort within a ₹10 lakh budget. Is the Skoda Kylaq a good option?

The Nissan Magnite is a good option for you. It has a spacious cabin and a comfortable rear seat that can accommodate three adults. 

Apart from a 1.0 NA petrol engine, the Magnite is also available with a punchy 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that can also be had with a CVT automatic. Meanwhile, the Skoda Kylaq's rear seat isn't as spacious for three adults.

I am planning to buy my first car with a budget of ₹14 to 15 lakh. I have undergone ACL surgery on my right leg and am unsure whether I should choose a manual or an automatic. I am inclined towards the Skoda Kylaq Prestige, but I am not sure if it is the right choice or which variant would suit me better. My monthly driving is usually around 300km, but between April and June, I drive up to about 700km per month. I also have a mango orchard located 2-3km off-road from my home. Please suggest which car and variant would be best for my needs.

Yes, the Skoda Kylaq Prestige is a good option, and you should definitely choose the automatic option. Unfortunately, you have had ACL surgery on your right leg, which is what you will need primarily for driving, but an automatic will still bring some amount of relief and ease of use.
The Skoda Kylaq's 6-speed torque converter AT gearbox is smooth and seamless, which will definitely benefit you in stop-go traffic, as well as on your occasional highway drives. Plus, this Skoda car has a robust suspension and a comfortable ride quality, which will help when you go off tarmac to your mango farm. Just bear in mind, this is still a 2WD car designed for the city, and not an off-roader, so it needs to be driven with care on loose or mucky surfaces.

I am planning to buy an automatic car with a budget of up to ₹16 lakh. My driving will be mostly in the city, and I am confused between the Skoda Kylaq, Tata Nexon, and the new Hyundai Venue. Safety and driving experience are my top priorities. Please advise.

The Skoda Kylaq is the best option here. It has a comfortable ride, the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is very punchy, and the 6-speed torque converter gearbox is smooth and quick too. This Skoda car has also received a 5-star crash test rating from Bharat NCAP, so it should be safe too.
The new Hyundai Venue is a great option too. It's got more features and tech, but it's not as comfortable as the Skoda, and its auto gearbox isn't as smooth. And while it has a lot of safety features, it hasn't yet been tested by any crash test authority. Most of all, though, spec for spec, it's more expensive than the Kylaq, and doesn't feel like as good a value for money.

Hi, we are planning to purchase the Skoda Kylaq (Signature Plus automatic variant) as it feels premium to look and be in. But doubts arise about its value for money. Is it true that the Skoda brand requires only 95 octane petrol and has a high maintenance cost? Is it worth buying it just for the looks, or will it be a headache to maintain it once purchased? Or should we consider other options? Is it reliable if we plan to keep and use the car for more than 10 years?

The Skoda Kylaq is a premium compact SUV, so with that comes a premium price, but you do get your money’s worth because, other than the design and interiors, which you like, the Kylaq is brilliant to drive.
The 1.0-litre TSI engine is one of the best small-capacity petrol engines in the market and offers superb performance and refinement. Skoda cars are not as easy on the pocket as Japanese or Korean cars, but they're not going to make a hole in your pocket either. It is solid enough to last 10 years or more.
Yes, the 1.0 TSI works best on 95 octane, which is now the base octane rating for normal E20 petrol that has been rolled out nationwide. So you really don’t have to search for 95 octane fuel and can fill anywhere.

For a first-time user, which is more suited between my shortlisted Skoda Kylaq Manual and the Toyota Fronx AMT?

The choice between an automatic and manual will really be down to your comfort levels. 

If you are not confident about driving a manual or have a lot of traffic to deal with, then an automatic would be better. In this case, pick the Maruti Suzuki Fronx AMT; the shifts will not be as smooth as a torque converter unit. But at least you won't have the hassle of changing gears yourself. 

If you can stretch your budget, opt for the 1.0 litre Turbo Fronx, which comes with a torque convertor automatic gearbox, or you can also opt for the Skoda Kylaq automatic, which also has a torque convertor and the lower variants would be a bit cheaper.

I need to change my car and am looking for an automatic petrol car. My monthly usage is around 200-300 km in Bangalore city, and I want to keep my budget between ₹10-12 lakh. Please suggest suitable options.

You can consider the Skoda Kylaq. Most automatic cars in this price segment offer an automated manual transmission (AMT), which is not a very smooth shifter. 

The Kylaq, on the other hand, comes with a torque converter (TC), which is by far the smoothest gearbox around. 

The Kylaq's compact dimensions also make it perfect for the city, and it has enough space inside. Fuel efficiency will not be as high as that of a Maruti Suzuki Swift. However, since your running is low, this should not be too much of an issue. You will certainly enjoy the smoother shifting gearbox.

Hi, I have a Hyundai i10, 2011 model, that I have used for around 90000 km. My average running is around 7000 km. I want a car with good average, boot space and proper safety. I intend to keep it for the next 15 years. My budget is around 13 lakhs. I have shortlisted 3XO AX5 petrol manual, Kylaq Signature Plus and Victoris VXI. Kindly advise.

With a budget of 13 lakhs, we would recommend the Skoda Kylaq, the Signature+ MT variant, which will give a good balance of performance, comfort, space, safety and features.
The Mahindra XUV 3XO has many features, but it scores low on real-world fuel efficiency, and you will have to stretch your budget to around 14 lakhs on road for the Maruti Suzuki Victoris VXI.

Since your driving is very little and almost all of it within the city, we would recommend the Skoda Kylaq automatic version. 

Most automatics in this segment come with an automated manual transmission (AMT), which are not smooth shifters. The Kylaq, on the other hand, comes with a torque converter (TC), which is the smoothest type of automatic transmission around. 

As for performance, the 1.0-litre turbo petrol is lively and strong enough, especially for the city. As for safety, it is well kitted out with safety features like standard 6 airbags, and it also secured a 5-star crash rating in the BNCAP tests.

My city usage will be very minimal, and I need a suggestion on whether I am choosing the right car. The Skoda Kylaq is one of the better compact SUVs in the market, so if you are inclined towards it is certainly worth buying. 

Being an SUV, the elevated seating position, which gives you good visibility of the road, is useful for first-time car buyers like yourself. We would advise you to opt for an automatic transmission because it will make your life behind the wheel a lot easier. 

The Kylaq’s 6-speed automatic is quite smooth and responsive, and paired to the 1.0 litre TSI engine, performance is effortless too. In terms of reliability, the Skoda doesn’t have the best reputation for service, but we don’t think that should be a deal breaker. 

With its 5-star crash rating, the Kylaq is very safe and known for its tough build.
