Planning to buy a ₹50 lakh SUV. Should I go for the tried and tested Fortuner or make a plunge for either the VW, Skoda or MG offerings? Which will be a reliable companion for at least 5 to 7 years?

While none of the others has proven quite as reliable as Toyota's long-running SUV, they are all reasonable if driven carefully and maintained according to their manufacturers' schedules. As vehicles, they're all superior to the aged Toyota Fortuner in just about every way, with better space, comfort, tech, refinement, driver enjoyment and ease of use.
They're all on the higher side of Rs 50 lakh, however (including the Fortuner), and you may have to settle for a lower-spec model. Of these, we'd recommend the Skoda Kodiaq, which combines space and refinement with an upmarket interior.

New SUV budget ₹50 lakh. Is the Fortuner being launched in the next couple of months?

The new Fortuner will not be launched until the end of the year and may even spill over into 2027. Hence, you may want to go ahead with the current Toyota Fortuner. Alternatively, if you want something similar, the recently launched MG Majestor, which is also a tough 4x4 with a strong diesel engine, is a good option.
If you want something a bit more refined and not as hardcore, the Skoda Kodiaq is worth looking at too.

Hi! I currently own a BMW M340i, which is 2 years old. I am considering buying an EV for daily and local commuting. I am looking for good design, a great music system and good battery life. Mahindra is already ruled out, as one of my cousins owns one. So I am considering either BYD or MG. If you could suggest any other ICE cars, that would be fine too. My budget is around Rs 30-40 lakh.

If you are looking for a good EV, the BYD Seal is a great option. It is one of the best electric cars in the Rs. 40 lakh range, offering a lot of tech, equipment, and a spacious interior. Performance, too, is very good, which, being a BMW 340i owner, you will appreciate.
The MG ZS EV is a good car, but it's not in the league of the BYD Seal. If the Seal is beyond your budget, the BYD Atto 3, priced between Rs. 27 and 37 lakh, is the next best option. It is not as spacious as the BYD, but it is well-equipped and has a good range.
Sadly, there are not many good ICE vehicles in that price bracket anymore, but the best option for your money is the Skoda Kodiaq, which ranges from Rs. 47-56 lakh.

Want to buy an SUV for around Rs 50 to 60 lakh. Five-seater preferred. Driving dynamics and comfort are priorities. Daily driving of around 40 km.

The Skoda Kodiaq would be your best option given the requirements. It is comfortable and spacious, with plush seats and a well-set-up suspension, and it has all the premium tech and features expected of a premium SUV.
Additionally, the 2.0-litre, 200hp TSI engine offers good power and performance is genuinely impressive given its luxury character. What's also impressive is that despite being a full-size SUV, the dynamics and chassis are impressive. High-speed handling is neat and tidy, while at lower speeds, the light steering makes the large Kodiaq feel quite manoeuvrable and easy to live with. This Skoda car is all-wheel drive, and that means grip in corners is very good.
The other alternative would be the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line, which has similar underpinnings to the Kodiaq. Prices for the Tayron are not out yet, but it is likely to be close to the Kodiaq since they both share a lot in common.

Hi Autocar, I am looking to upgrade from my Kia Seltos to a bigger and more spacious car, preferably a 6 or 7 seater. I have shortlisted a few cars: Mahindra XUV 7XO, Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron. Is it worth paying the premium for the Kodiaq or Tayron over the 7XO? I liked the XUV 7XO in a short test drive. I still need to test drive the Kodiaq. Please give me your opinion on the same. Thank you.

The Mahindra XUV 7XO is a good option for a 6/7-seater SUV. It is spacious, comfortable and has a good feature list. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is also quite strong and refined.
The Skoda Kodiaq is a more premium and upmarket SUV that is also very spacious and comfortable, and the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is quite strong, and it also gets all-wheel drive.
The Volkswagen Tayron is similar to the Kodiaq with an upmarket cabin and the same TSI engine. However, the XUV 7XO is extremely well-equipped and has a better ride quality than both the Kodiaq and Tayron. That said, the third row is not as spacious, so if you need the extra seats frequently, the Kodiaq or Tayron will be better.
The XUV's strength lies in its value proposition as it is also a lot more inexpensive in comparison with the top-spec variant, priced almost Rs 25 lakh less than the Kodiaq.

I own a BMW X5 (2016) and a Venue N Line N8 (2023). I want to reconfigure my garage to one SUV and one sedan, one luxury and the other at a decent level. My total budget is ₹55–60 lakh, and I will only buy used cars. Please suggest.

Being a BMW owner, you could consider getting a 2020/21 BMW 630i or 630d, which is a very practical yet luxurious sedan. Not only is it great to drive, but it is also very comfortable to be driven in, and it'll feel like a huge step-up in terms of tech and features compared to your outgoing BMW X5. You could budget around Rs 35-40 lakh for this.
With the balance amount, you can look for a 2021/22 Skoda Kodiaq 2.0 TSI. It is a posh, upmarket SUV that's great to drive, and also has the optional third row.

I own a 2017 Hyundai Xcent SX(O) diesel that has been driven around 1.07 lakh km. Now I am thinking of changing it. The options in my mind are the Kia Sonet HTK+(O) petrol or the Honda Amaze ZX (MT), but from my research, both feel underpowered due to their naturally aspirated engines. Are there any better petrol options around a ₹10 lakh budget? I don’t want to continue with diesel because they are now overpriced and have many emissions concerns. Please suggest.

Yes, you are right. The Kia Sonet’s and Honda Amaze’s 1.2 litre naturally aspirated petrol engines, although fine for city use, will feel a bit down on power for highway duties. Especially compared to your Hyundai Xcent diesel, you own currently. It has a lot more torque; these cars will feel slower in comparison and won’t really feel like an upgrade.

In your Rs 10 lakh budget, you can look at either the Mahindra XUV 3XO REVX M or the Skoda Kylaq Classic Plus. Both these cars are powered by turbo petrol engines, which give them strong performance, and both are genuinely enjoyable to drive. The Mahindra scores big on cabin space, making it one of the most comfortable cars in the segment for five adults. While the Skoda Kodiaq offers a much larger boot, which adds to its practicality.

If you are looking for better efficiency and a lighter clutch for a more effortless driving experience, you could also consider the Maruti Suzuki Brezza LXi. However, in Maruti’s case, we would recommend waiting as an update is due soon.

I am in a dilemma about buying a new car with a budget of ₹30-40 lakh. My usage will be 60% city and 40% highway. I am okay with either a 5-seater or a 7-seater with the last row folded. I am considering the Jeep Meridian, Mahindra XUV 7XO, and Tata Harrier. Please suggest which one I should choose.

While you can buy both the Tata Harrier/Safari or Mahindra XUV 7XO in that budget, since your budget ceiling is higher at Rs 40 lakh, why not consider the Jeep Meridian, which is a superior vehicle overall. It is larger, has a more luxurious interior and better badge value, plus, should you ever need it, solid off-road ability too. 

Its third row is not as spacious as the Safari's, but now that it is equipped with a sliding second row, adjustments can be made. If you can somehow stretch your budget past Rs 40 lakh, an even better option is the Skoda Kodiaq

I am confused between the Audi Q3 and the Skoda Kodiaq. I drive around 1000 kms per month, mainly in the city. I am getting a good deal on Q3 as well as Kodiaq L&K, at almost the same on-road price. Please suggest.

The Skoda Kodiaq is more spacious and feels more modern than the Audi Q3, and it comes with all the equipment a luxury car buyer would want, including wireless Apple and Android connectivity, which the Q3 doesn’t have.
However, although the Q3 feels dated, especially on the inside, it has a certain old-school charm and superb cabin quality, with ride quality in particular being exceptional. The rear seats are quite cramped, but if you drive yourself, the compact dimensions of the Q3 will be a boon in Mumbai traffic. Yes, the Kodiaq gives you more car for the money, but the Audi Q3 has stronger badge value and is nicer to drive.

Looking to buy an SUV. Which among these (Innova HyCross, XUV 7XO, Skoda Kodiaq, and Jeep Meridian) has the best ride comfort, road handling, better suspension, and a comfortable third row?

It is a very close call between the cars you have shortlisted, given your requirements. Between the XUV 7XO, Skoda Kodiaq, and Jeep Meridian, the differences are fairly marginal. The Jeep Meridian and the Kodiaq do feel more premium in terms of interior material quality and fit and finish compared to the 7XO, although the 7XO, especially after the recent facelift, is not far behind. It also offers more features than the other two, is more spacious, and benefits from an updated suspension that has addressed one of the earlier XUV700’s biggest drawbacks: suspension noise.
In terms of powertrains, the Mahindra impresses with both petrol and diesel options paired with automatic gearboxes. Its 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines are genuinely world-class, adding to the overall upmarket feel. However, one area where the Mahindra XUV 7XO, as well as the Kodiaq and Meridian, falls short is third-row comfort. In all three cars, the third row is best suited for children. The 7XO also misses out on a sliding middle row, which would have significantly improved third-row usability.
If third row comfort is a priority, the Toyota Innova HyCross makes the most sense. It offers a comfortable ride, is easy to drive despite its size, and has by far the most usable third row among your shortlisted options, with enough space for adults on longer journeys. Its hybrid powertrain also delivers excellent efficiency. Do keep in mind, however, that compared to the others, the interior does not feel as premium, and sound insulation at highway speeds could have been better.
