Hi, I have recently learned to drive and am planning to buy my first car. My budget is around Rs 10 lakh, with an expected monthly usage of about 600km, mostly within Chennai city. I am looking for a reliable automatic car with good mileage and decent features. I have shortlisted the Maruti Swift and Baleno, Hyundai Exter and i10 Nios, Kia Sonet and Nissan Magnite. I also like the Mahindra XUV 3XO for its looks. Would it be practical for my usage? Thank you.

Mahindra XUV 3XO Petrol AT is a good-looking car, but it is not particularly known for mileage. In our real-world test, the XUV 3XO gave a mileage of  9.89 kpl in the city. In comparison, the Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT gives a mileage of 12.7 kpl in the city.
If you want a slightly bigger car, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT or Toyota Glanza AMT can be a good option. They are essentially the same car with different badges. Both offer a real-world fuel efficiency of around 12 kpl, and can deliver even more with a relaxed driving style. They are also known for their reliability and low cost of ownership.

I am a senior citizen and want to replace my old car. My average monthly running is around 500km, and my budget is ₹8 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki Swift is a good fit for you. You should go for the 1.2 petrol VXi AMT variant. It fits within your budget and has adequate features. Swift strikes a good balance between mileage, performance, and comfort. The 1.2-litre engine performs well in city driving and is adequate for highway use too. Maruti’s proven reliability and reasonable cost of ownership add to the overall ownership experience. The AMT will add to the convenience of driving in the city.
It also comes with all the necessary features, including a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 6 airbags, powered front windows, projector headlamps, and steering-mounted controls. In our real-world fuel efficiency test, the Swift AMT delivered 12.7 kpl in the city and 19.1 kpl on the highway.

I want to buy a car. I am a 36-year-old woman and am confused about which car would be safe and comfortable for city as well as occasional highway use. I am also unsure whether I should opt for a manual or an automatic. My budget is up to ₹8 lakh. Please suggest.

You should look at the Maruti Suzuki Swift. It's an easy-to-drive car whose compact dimensions make it city-friendly. Performance is pleasant, while the light clutch and smooth gearbox mean even the manual gearbox version is convenient to drive.
However, if you often drive on congested roads, the AMT auto is worth a look. It's not the smoothest kind of automatic gearbox, but it sure beats having to modulate the clutch over long, bumper-to-bumper commutes.

My budget is ₹10-11 lakh, and this will be my first car. My monthly driving will be less than 200km. Please suggest a suitable option.

Without knowing other requirements, it is hard to pinpoint the ideal car for you. However, given that you are a new driver, we will give greater weightage to ease of use and hassle-free ownership. Based on body style, here are a few suitable options to consider:

I am interested in buying a new Maruti car around ₹6.5-7 lakh. Is it better to buy a top-variant Ignis or a mid-variant Swift? I am looking for a manual drive only, high driver seating, reasonable safety and entertainment features in this budget range, and decent resale value.

Since your priority is a high seating position, you should go for the top variant of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis. The Ignis has a slightly elevated driving position compared to the Maruti Suzuki Swift and better all-around visibility.

The Swift’s interiors feel a touch claustrophobic in comparison. What makes the case for the Ignis is the 1.2 K-series four-cylinder engine, which feels peppier and smoother than the Swift’s Z12, three-cylinder motor. However, the Swift, which is a more popular model, has a higher resale value.

Can you suggest a second-hand diesel vehicle, preferably a Maruti or Mahindra TUV300, in the range of ₹5-5.5 lakh?

Instead of Mahindra TUV300, it would be better for you go for the Maruti Suzuki Dzire or Swift.

Mahindra has stopped the manufacturing of TUV300, which means in future the service bill can go up. Most manufacturers promise to supply the parts, but their availability goes down, and parts become expensive.

I am planning to buy a car. I have learned driving at a driving school, but still need more practice. I am thinking of buying a new car, as used cars in good condition are quite expensive. My budget is ₹8 to 12 lakh. Should I go for a manual or an automatic? I want a car that is easy to adapt to, as I do not have much driving experience.

Since you are a new driver, we would recommend that you go for an automatic car. This will make your driving experience much easier and stress-free.
In your budget, you can consider the Maruti Suzuki Swift, which is available with a 5-speed AMT automatic gearbox. The Swift is a fairly spacious and practical hatchback that is easy to drive and own. Prices for the Maruti Swift AMT range from Rs 7.04 lakh to Rs 8.65 lakh (ex-showroom).
Alternatively, you could consider the Hyundai i20, which comes with a more spacious cabin and a smoother CVT automatic gearbox.

I am 53 years old and 6 feet 2 inches tall. I have just learned to drive and am still not very confident. I want to buy my first car for a family of four. My budget is Rs 7 to 9 lakh. I will drive around 40 km per day in the city and around 1,400 km on the highway every three months. Please suggest which car would be good for me.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift or Baleno will suit you well. The Swift is easy to drive, efficient and spacious enough for four with good highway ability.
The Baleno offers more space, a larger boot and a smoother, more powerful four-cylinder 1.2-litre engine. In your budget, you can get the ZXi variant of the Swift, which has a slightly better feature set than the similarly priced Zeta variant of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno.

I would like to buy an automatic transmission car within a budget of 8.5 Lakhs. Mostly city driving, better mileage is required for regular use.

Given your requirements, you should consider the Maruti Suzuki Swift. The Swift gets an 82hp, 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine that can be had with a 5-speed AMT automatic gearbox.
The Swift AMT has a claimed mileage of 25.75kpl and is currently priced between Rs 7.04 lakh-8.65 lakh (ex-showroom).
