I am a first-time buyer and confused about whether to buy the Tata Taigo Pure+ AMT, Hyundai i10 Sportz AMT or Swift VXi Opt AMT. I will use the car for occasional city as well as highway driving and not for everyday commuting. Please suggest the best option or any other option available around this budget range. Also, please suggest if I should but cng for this type of usage or stick to a petrol car.

For your usage, we would recommend the Maruti Suzuki Swift VXi (O) AMT. As a first-time buyer with occasional city and highway driving, the Swift strikes the best balance of reliability, ease of ownership and driving comfort. The new Swift is a well-rounded hatchback with a refined engine, good fuel efficiency and a proven ownership experience. The AMT is smooth enough for city use, and the car feels stable and confidence-inspiring on the highway. The Tata Tiago Pure+ AMT is a strong value proposition with a solid build and good safety credentials, but the Swift has a more refined engine and a more consistent ownership experience. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Sportz AMT is also a good option with a comfortable ride and a feature-rich cabin, but the Swift feels more engaging to drive and has a stronger resale value. On the CNG question, we would recommend sticking to petrol. CNG only makes financial sense if you have high monthly running, and for occasional city and highway use, petrol is the more convenient and hassle-free option. You avoid the compromises of reduced boot space too.

I am confused between the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Sportz AMT, Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT, and Tata Tiago Pure+ AMT. As a first-time buyer and driver with very low to moderate city and highway use, please help me choose the best car. Also, based on my usage, should I consider a CNG car or stick to my original plan of buying a petrol car? Please also suggest any better alternative available in this price range.

For a first-time buyer with low-to-moderate city and highway use, the Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT is the best fit. It is an easy car to drive in the city, with light steering, smooth AMT and a very user-friendly nature that makes it ideal for new drivers. The cabin is well finished, the ride is comfortable, and Maruti's service network is strong, which adds to long-term peace of mind. The Hyundai i10 Nios has a slightly more refined engine, but it is not as efficient as the Swift, and the cabin is not as spacious either. The Tata Tiago Pure Plus AMT is the value pick, but the powertrain is the least refined of the three and Tata’s service consistency is still not as strong as Hyundai or Maruti. On CNG, it only makes sense if your running is high enough to justify the higher upfront cost and lower boot space. For low to moderate use, petrol is the better choice. If you want a slightly larger car, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT is a solid choice for not a lot more money, but overall the Swift AMT is the most balanced and easiest car to live with for a first-time buyer.

My monthly running is approximately 1,200 km, mostly within the Delhi-NCR region. My family includes my wife, my 11-year-old son, and my mother. I had to sell my beautifully maintained third-generation Honda City V MT because of the 15-year NGT rule in Delhi. In October 2024, I bought a Tata Punch EV S Long Range, which has proven to be tech-loaded, extremely economical to run, comfortable, and very convenient for navigating Delhi's congested roads. However, I still miss having an all-rounder with the character of the third-generation City, especially on highway drives. I have shortlisted two options: the Maruti Suzuki Swift MT and the Maruti Suzuki Jimny AT. I enjoy driving briskly, while staying within legal limits, on highways, which is why the Swift appeals to me. At the same time, my heart is set on Jimny for its classic looks and abilities. I plan to undertake long road trips to destinations such as Keran in Kashmir, Leh-Ladakh, Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, and other parts of the country. Considering my current usage, I may keep just one car in the garage, although I am also open to owning both an EV for city driving and an ICE car for highway trips. With this in mind, I would appreciate your expert advice on the best long-term choice.

Given your usage and aspirations, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny AT is the better fit. Your monthly running of 1,200 km in Delhi-NCR is well within petrol territory, and your intent to do long road trips to places like Leh and Arunachal points towards a car with capability rather than outright speed. The Swift is a fantastic highway car, but it is ultimately a hatchback and will not give you the sense of adventure or the ability to tackle rough terrain that the Jimny offers. The Jimny, on the other hand, is a purpose-built off-roader with a classic appeal, and it will allow you to explore the kind of destinations you have in mind with confidence. It is not the fastest car on the highway, nor is it spacious, but it is comfortable enough and excels when the going gets tough. Since you already have the Tata Punch EV for city duties, the Jimny can be your dedicated adventure vehicle, and you do not need to compromise by keeping only one car. This combination gives you the best of both worlds: an efficient city runabout and a characterful, capable highway explorer.

I am planning to buy my first family car strictly under 6.5 lakh - 7 lakh (on-road) in Karnataka. My usage will be mainly local commute of 15-18 km daily and highway trips of approximately 300 km to hometown. I'm looking for a practical, reliable and low-maintenance vehicle, and therefore, I am leaning towards petrol with manual transmission. Features that I'm looking for include decent AC, all-4 power windows and central locking along with sufficient rear seat space for 2 adults and a boot big enough to accomodate 2-3 trolley bags. I have shortlisted Maruti Wagon R VXi 1.0 and Maruti Swift LXi. We have excluded Baleno as it wouldn't fit our parking space. I'm also excluding Renault and Citroen as these brands do not have a presence near where I live. I do not wish to consider Tata due to on-going bad experience with service that my friends are facing. Please share your opinion about these two models or any other reliable car that I might be missing out on.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Swift LXi. Your usage pattern is a mix of daily city commuting and occasional 300km highway runs, and the Swift is the better all-rounder for this. It offers a more comfortable ride, better highway stability and a more refined driving experience compared to the Wagon R. The rear seat has enough space for two adults, and the boot is big enough to suit your requirement of carrying 2-3 trolley bags. The Wagon R is a very practical city car with a tall-boy design and good headroom, but it is not as comfortable or as confidence-inspiring on the highway. Both cars are equally reliable and low-maintenance, but the Swift feels like a more complete car overall.

I want to buy my first car for casual and office use within a budget of Rs. 11 lakh. My monthly commute will be around 300-400 km. Mileage and low maintenance costs are my top priorities. I also want good reliability and resale value, as I plan to keep the car for at least 10 years. I prefer a naturally aspirated (NA) engine over a turbo engine, and I am open to MT/AMT options based on service costs and mileage. I am very confused between the Dzire, Swift, Amaze, Fronx, and the new Brezza. I need guidance on which one would be the best choice.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Dzire petrol manual. It is the most sensible choice for your requirements. Your monthly running is low, so a naturally aspirated petrol engine is the right choice, and the Dzire’s 1.2-litre engine is proven to be reliable, efficient and easy to maintain. The manual gearbox is simple, robust and will keep running costs low over a long ownership period. This Maruti Suzuki car is also one of the most reliable cars in the segment, with excellent service reach and strong resale value, which is important given your 10-year ownership plan. It is comfortable for daily office commutes, easy to drive in the city, and has enough space for occasional family use. The Maruti Suzuki Swift is a good alternative if you prefer a hatchback, but the Dzire offers a more practical boot and a slightly more comfortable rear seat. The Honda Amaze is also a strong contender with a reliable naturally aspirated engine, but Maruti’s wider service network and lower maintenance costs give the Dzire the edge. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx and Maruti Suzuki Brezza are good cars, but as turbo petrols they are not the best fit for your priorities of low maintenance and long-term ownership. The Dzire is the car that will give you the least hassle and the most peace of mind over 10 years.
