I would like to buy an automatic transmission car within a budget of 8.5 Lakhs. Mostly city driving, better mileage is required for regular use.

Given your requirements, you should consider the Maruti Suzuki Swift. The Swift gets an 82hp, 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine that can be had with a 5-speed AMT automatic gearbox.
The Swift AMT has a claimed mileage of 25.75kpl and is currently priced between Rs 7.04 lakh-8.65 lakh (ex-showroom).

Hi, I’m planning to buy my first car, and I prefer an automatic transmission. I’ll be using it daily for office commutes in bumper‑to‑bumper traffic, and since I’m tall and well built, I need something with comfortable, manageable legroom. Could you suggest some suitable cars within a ₹9-10 lakh on-road price in Chennai based on these requirements?

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is a good option to consider. It has been a long while since this Maruti Suzuki car received a significant update, but it still offers typical features you would expect, and the compact dimensions make it easy for a first-time buyer. Being a tall car, it offers good headroom.
If, however, you would like something newer, you could consider the Maruti Suzuki Swift as well.

I want to change/upgrade to an automatic petrol car that is easy to drive. I will be using it mostly for local shopping, etc. My budget is between 8-9 lakhs, and I am open to EVs.

Since you are open to an EV, we would suggest you look at the Tata Punch EV. It is a little above your budget, but you will get a car that is easy to drive for your local shopping trips and being an electric car will be the smoothest automatics you can find.
The trouble is, below Rs 10 lakh most automatics are automated manuals (AMT) which are not smooth shifters, and you can feel the shifts as they happen. If you must stick with your 9 lakh budget, have a look at the new Maruti Suzuki Swift, its light controls make it easy to drive, especially in the city and the car rides well too.

I want to buy a new car by exchanging my existing one. My budget is 9 lakhs. I will drive mostly in the city, with highway trips or long drives 4-5 times a year. My priorities are safety, comfort, a good engine and gearbox, reliability, and good after-sales support or service network. I prefer a manual. Since parking in the city is a challenge, I don’t want a very big car.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift is a car that meets all your criteria. Its 1.2-litre engine delivers good performance for the city, the gearbox is very slick to use and, in size, it's not too big either.
Being a Maruti Suzuki, excellent reliability is a given, as is a hassle-free ownership experience. The Swift hasn't been rated on crash safety, but it packs in plenty of safety kit, and there's also comfort in knowing that the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, which is based on the same platform, is a 5-star Global NCAP-rated car.
Other options within the Maruti stable include the slightly larger Maruti Baleno and Maruti Fronx.

I have followed your writing for two decades and now request your advice: Among hatchbacks and crossovers with 1.2 NA engines — from MS (Ignis, Swift, Baleno, Fronx), Hyundai (Grand i10 Nios, i20, Exter), Tata (Tiago, Altroz, Punch), and Citroen (C3 1.2 NA) — which is the most fun to drive? I personally feel that the older Swift with its 1.2 K12 engine was best, but with the current Z-series 3-pot engine things are less exciting. Considering performance, is Ignis perhaps the best of the lot now, thanks to its light weight and decent road manners?

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis and Baleno share the 1.2-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine, which is known for its smoothness, refinement, free-revving nature and fuel efficiency. The Ignis is relatively smaller in size than the Baleno, and with its light controls, will be a touch easier to drive and park in tight spaces.

That said, the new Maruti Suzuki Swift is still an excellent, fun-to-drive option, with a nicer steering (it returns to centre more naturally than the Ignis' unit), and its darty nature. Its 3-cylinder petrol engine is also very good in terms of drivability; yes, it doesn't revv as freely as the 4-cylinder 1.2 unit, but if you don't regularly spin the engine beyond 4000rpm, it'll keep you satisfied.

Do drive the new Swift once, it might just be the one for you.

Hello, Autocar. As a car fan, I’ve been a reader for quite some time. I want to buy a new car for my parents, who are first-time drivers, so an automatic is a must. I want a hatchback that is easy to drive and low on maintenance. Most of the driving will be on the highway or from the village to the nearby town. I’ve shortlisted the new Suzuki Swift ZXI AMT. Please share your opinion. Is there any other option you would suggest, if not the Swift?

The Maruti Suzuki Swift that you have shortlisted is a decent option for your parents. The controls are light and easy to operate, and the engine is tuned for efficiency rather than performance. Thus, your parents, who are first-time drivers, would find this a good car to use.
The only issue is the AMT gearbox, which is not a smooth shifter. Take a test drive and see how they feel about this. If you are open to an electric car, you can opt for the Tata Punch EV. It would offer a smooth and easy drive, and the high seating point would offer good visibility.

My daily running is 300 km. I want to know if shifting to an EV is a good idea or if I should continue with an ICE vehicle.

You have a very high daily running, thus, going purely by running cost, shifting to an EV would make sense. However, you would have to ensure you get a model that offers a good range. Cars like the MG Comet and the Tata Punch EV would not provide you with a comfortable enough driving range for your daily running.
You would have to look at the Tata Nexon EV, which would just about suffice. Thus, you would have to spend more to ensure you have a model with a range sufficient to ensure you do not have to stop to charge in the middle of the day.
So if your budget does not permit, stick with an ICE car and look for something efficient like the Maruti Suzuki Swift or look for a CNG car if pumps are available in your area.

I want to buy a new car for my parents, who are first-time drivers, so an automatic is a must. We live near a highway, so most driving will be highway or short village-to-town runs. I want a hatchback with low maintenance and easy driving for beginners. My budget is up to ₹10 lakh. I’ve shortlisted the Maruti Swift 2024 ZXI AMT - what do you think?

While the Maruti Swift ZXI AMT is a good choice, we would recommend the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT Alpha, which costs a similar amount. The Baleno's engine feels stronger and will be more suited to highway driving. Like the Swift, the Baleno is also easy and cheap to maintain and delivers good fuel economy.

Also worth looking at is the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.2 AMT. It has the same engine as the Baleno, but what makes it worth considering for your parents is its higher seating and elevated driving position. Getting in and out of the car is easy and the large glass area makes visibility very good. Also, the high seating also gives confidence when driving on the highway.

My Swift VDi is in very good condition except for some injector issues, as per my service advisor. The car has run 2.18 lakh km. Do I need to replace the injectors? I usually drive around 2,000 km a month, and I plan to keep this vehicle for the long term since diesels are becoming rare.

Yes, it is normal to replace your diesel vehicle's injectors after driving over 2 lakh kilometres. Longer crank, rough idle, drop in fuel efficiency, sluggish acceleration, etc, are some of the signs indicating an injector change.
Since your service advisor has checked the vehicle and recommended a replacement, it is better for you to go ahead and extend the life of your diesel car by keeping it in top shape.

Hi, I currently own two cars - a 10-year-old Honda City VDi and a Maruti Ertiga VDi. Now, I want to buy a small car for daily commuting in Kolkata traffic. I’m looking for something reliable, easy to drive, and fuel-efficient. Which model(s) would you recommend and why?

Since your intended usage will be in Kolkata traffic, we don't recommend a diesel engine, like you have in your other two cars. Depending on your budget, you could consider a petrol car or even an EV. Among petrol cars, you could get a Maruti Swift under Rs 10 lakh, which is easygoing and efficient. And if you're after an EV, consider the MG Comet EV if you don't need a lot of space - its compact footprint makes it ideal for traffic. An EV will always have lower running costs and a smoother drive than a petrol car, which is helpful in traffic.
