•1dHi, I am Srini from Bangalore. I have a Kicks Turbo petrol 2022 XV manual (17,000km driven), and I am interested in the new Kia Seltos turbo DCT GT A variant. Kindly advise if this would be a good upgrade or if I should continue with my existing Kicks Turbo petrol with some additional accessories. Thanks!

Autocar India
Go for the Kia Seltos 1.5 turbo-petrol DCT in GT Line. It is a step up from your Kicks, and will feel like a real upgrade in terms of refinement, safety tech and overall cabin experience.Your Kicks Turbo is a strong driver’s car, but the Kia Seltos brings the two big gains you’ll feel every day. First, the DCT automatic takes the hard work out of stop-and-go traffic, so your commute will be far more relaxed. Second, the Seltos cabin feels more upmarket, with better screens, a sharper camera system and many comfort touches . It is also better equipped on safety in higher trims, and Kia’s service reach in Bangalore is wide and usually smooth. Performance will not feel like a downgrade either; the 1.5 turbo is quick, and the Seltos feels stable and easy to drive. One thing to be aware of is that a DCT can feel a bit hesitant at very low speeds. Also, the GT Line’s larger wheels make the ride a little firm. Do a long test drive on your usual commute and see if the Seltos DCT suits you.

•1dMy budget is around ₹23 lakh, and I am confused between the Duster and the Creta. Which one is the better option? I love going on long drives, so which one should I prefer?

Autocar India
Given your love for long drives, you will be happier with the Renault Duster. It's got a fantastic ride and handling balance, which will make your journeys comfortable and very enjoyable. The great suspension and body control are matched by a strong 160hp, 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine. Power and performance are good. Going for a Duster does come with a slight compromise in terms of cabin space. It's not as roomy as the Hyundai Creta and other models, like the Kia Seltos and Tata Sierra. If more space is a key priority, the Hyundai Creta Turbo-DCT is worth a look. Of the other alternatives, the Kia Seltos Turbo DCT and Tata Sierra turbo AT are also strong options.

•1dI am a retired person and currently own a Jeep Compass Limited Plus diesel manual, which I am planning to replace. My driving is about 5% in Chennai city and the rest on highways. Once every two months, I go on long road trips, mainly on highways and rural roads. Most of the time, it will be just me and my wife, with occasionally two additional passengers. I am considering the diesel Kia Seltos or Mahindra 7XO within a ₹16-18 lakh on-road budget. Kindly suggest which vehicle and model would be most suitable for my needs.

Autocar India
For your usage, which is mostly highway driving with occasional rural roads and long trips, the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel manual is the better fit. It offers a more relaxed and effortless driving experience, especially over long distances. An important point in your case is what you are upgrading from. Your Jeep Compass diesel uses a 2.0-litre engine, and moving to the Kia Seltos diesel, which has a smaller 1.5-litre engine, will not feel like an upgrade in terms of performance. It will feel adequate, but not significantly stronger than what you are used to.The XUV 7XO, on the other hand, also uses a larger 2.0-litre diesel engine, and despite being a bigger car, it will feel like a proper step up. You will notice stronger pulling power, more effortless highway cruising and better overall performance. It also feels more stable and composed at speed, which suits your kind of long-distance driving. Refinement levels are also good, making it a comfortable car for extended journeys. The Seltos diesel is easier to drive in the city and feels more compact and user-friendly, but on highways and rough rural roads, it does not feel as robust or as planted as the 7XO.One important point is the budget. The 7XO diesel variants may go slightly above your Rs 18 lakh on-road range, depending on the variant and location, so you will need to check exact pricing.

•1dI am trying to finalise a car for my family, with a budget stretched up to ₹17 lakh. I liked the Renault Duster, but I am unsure whether the turbo engine would be suitable for city driving. I am also comparing it with the Kia Seltos HTK and HTK (O) variants. Which option would be better for my usage and why?

Autocar India
The Kia Seltos 1.5 petrol IVT is the easier car to live with in your kind of usage. The IVT gearbox is very smooth and works beautifully in city traffic, offering a creep-friendly, jerk-free experience that makes daily driving stress-free. The naturally aspirated engine is also predictable and linear, which suits stop-go conditions very well. The Renault Duster turbo automatic, on the other hand, comes with a DCT gearbox. While it delivers stronger performance and a much better mid-range punch, the DCT is not as smooth as the Seltos’ IVT at low speeds. In crawling traffic, you may notice slight hesitation or jerkiness compared to the seamless nature of the IVT.Where the Duster clearly stands out is in its ride quality and driving feel. It has a more rugged setup, absorbs bad roads better and feels more fun to drive, especially on highways and twisty roads. The turbo engine also makes it noticeably quicker and more effortless when you want to overtake. If your driving is mostly city, and you want maximum comfort and smoothness, go for the Seltos IVT.

•2dI currently use a Maruti Ciaz petrol from 2019 and am planning to replace it with another 1500 cc SUV priced around ₹18 lakhs. My monthly city running is less than 1,000 km. Please suggest a comfortable car.

Autocar India
The key point here is what you are upgrading from. The Ciaz has one of the best rear seats, and at this price point, no SUV really matches that level of rear-seat space and comfort. We would have recommended the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara or the Hyryder, especially since you already own a car from the same brand. However, both are on the weaker side when it comes to rear-seat space and overall comfort, so they will feel like a step down compared to your current car.For a proper upgrade, you are better off looking at the Seltos, Creta or even the Elevate. The Kia Seltos would be the first recommendation. The new generation is a larger car than before, and that reflects in its cabin. It feels more spacious and the rear seat is comfortable enough for family use, making it the closest you will get to a proper upgrade in this segment. The Hyundai Creta is also a very good option. It offers a similar level of comfort and uses the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which is refined, smooth and easy to drive. It is slightly smaller on the inside compared to the Seltos, but still comfortable for most family needs. The Honda Elevate is the more sensible and slightly more affordable option. It offers good space and a comfortable ride, and in fact has very good rear seat legroom, but the engine is not as refined as the Kia and Hyundai cars, which you will notice in everyday driving.

•2dHi, I am planning to buy a new car for my daily commute to office in Gurgaon (30 kms daily) and occasional highway driving (500-700 km every alternate month). As of now, I am considering only petrol automatic variants. The budget can be stretched up to 20 lakh for the right car. I am considering Duster, Seltos, and Kushaq. I enjoy driving, so I do not want a dull car, plus want some advanced features. I am considering the current ecosystem of offerings. Please suggest.

Autocar India
Pick the new Renault Duster 1.3-litre with the DCT automatic. It produces segment-leading figures of 163hp and 280Nm, and the wet-clutch dual-clutch automatic impresses with its almost torque-converter-like smoothness. It isn’t quite as engaging to drive as the Skoda Kushaq, but it makes up for it with sublime ride quality. Besides, a comparable Kushaq 1.5 TSI DSG will be closer to Rs 22 lakh on-road, as the bigger engine is only available in the top two trims. The Duster’s Techno+ trim should fit within your budget and comes very well equipped for the price. The one downside is that it is not as spacious on the inside as the Kia Seltos. If that is a priority, then consider the Seltos with the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol DCT instead. On the test drive, spend 10 minutes in bumper-to-bumper traffic to feel DCT creep, then do an 80-100kph run to check straight-line stability and cabin noise.

•2dI live in Chennai and want a car with good performance and safety, and preferably better mileage. I am considering the Seltos HTK(O) DCT and the Kushaq 1.0 AT Classic Plus. My thought process is that I can upgrade to a bigger car after a year or so, when I sell my wife’s Venue DCT, and she can then drive the Kushaq Classic Plus. My monthly commuting will be around 1,000-1,200km, with 80% city use. Open to other suggestions as well. My budget for the Kushaq is ₹14 lakh, whereas for the Seltos it goes up to ₹18 lakh.

Autocar India
Choose the Skoda Kushaq 1.0 AT Classic Plus. For Chennai’s 80% city use and your budget, it delivers five-star safety and a smoother-shifting automatic. With your usage involving mostly stop-and-go driving, the Kushaq’s 8-speed torque-converter avoids the occasional hesitation of Kia’s DCT and potential clutch-pack wear. It’s easy to drive and park, and its five-star Global NCAP (adult and child) rating adds to the sense of safety. In city traffic, the smaller 1.0 TSI will also be more fuel efficient than the turbo-DCT Seltos. The one thing you give up is outright performance. The Kia Seltos 1.5-turbo DCT makes about 160hp and feels quicker, especially above 60kph and on highways. If you value stronger performance and can stretch your budget, then consider the Kia Seltos 1.5-turbo DCT.On the test drive, do a 15-minute crawl in traffic-like loops. Check low-speed creep smoothness and city ride comfort over speed breakers and rough patches.

•3dI want to purchase a car within a budget of 12 to 13 lakh. My running is about 50km every day during office hours in Mumbai. I am open to a hatchback or SUV. My requirement is a 5-star safety, reliability, low maintenance, spacious, and a good-feel cabin. Presently, I own a Tata Altroz. Please suggest a suitable car.

Autocar India
For your requirement, the Hyundai Venue and the Kia Seltos fit quite well. The Hyundai Venue HX5 turbo DCT is the easier car to live with. It is compact, very easy to drive in city traffic, and the automatic transmission makes daily commuting effortless. The cabin of this Hyundai car feels modern and well-equipped, so you will not feel the need to add much later. The Kia Seltos HTE or HTK is the better overall upgrade. It is a larger car, more spacious and more comfortable, especially at the rear. The 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol engine is smooth, refined and easy to drive, making it well suited for long term use. Even in the base variants, it gets all the essential features you would need.

•3dI want to buy a petrol SUV/car. My budget is around 13 lakh. My priorities are mileage and safety.

Autocar India
Consider the Hyundai Venue 1.2-litre MT in the HX6 trim. It has recently received a full five-star safety rating from Bharat NCAP and comes with six airbags, ABS with EBD, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. The naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol offers sufficient performance, along with good refinement and efficiency. The official claimed fuel efficiency is 18kpl, and you should get reasonably close to that on a steady highway cruise.Alternatively, if you are looking for a larger car, consider the Kia Seltos HTE with the 1.5-litre NA engine and manual combination, which also offers good efficiency for its size.On the test drive, check if the pick-up from the engine is satisfactory and whether the cabin feels comfortable for longer journeys.

•4dI live in Gurgaon and plan to purchase a car. The two cars I have shortlisted are the Seltos HTX 1.5 diesel automatic and the Seltos HTX 1.5 petrol IVT. My monthly running is around 1,500-2,000km. What should I choose?

Autocar India
Pick the Kia Seltos HTX 1.5 Petrol IVT. Since you live in Gurgaon, where diesel cars can only be legally operated for 10 years, petrol is the better choice. While your running is on the slightly higher side, the savings from choosing diesel may not be enough to offset its higher purchase price and its lower resale value in Delhi NCR.The 1.5-litre engine is very refined, and the IVT does a good job of making it feel responsive in the city. In most urban driving, it offers adequate performance and doesn’t feel strained unless pushed hard. The IVT also simulates stepped shifts, so it feels more natural and doesn’t exhibit too much of the rubber-band effect that other CVTs do. If your usage is mostly on the highway and you need more performance, then consider the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol instead. On the test drive, check if the throttle response and performance are adequate for your needs.
