I want to buy a new 6/7-seater car. I booked a Kia Carens Clavis DCT (HTK-O Plus) after research, but now an XUV700 AX5 P AT at the same price (2025 stock available) is an option. I’m confused about which to choose. Considering city/highway use (70:30) and solo/family use (60:40), which one should I go for?

You're right to say the Kia Carens Clavis is better as a 6/7 seater and as a city car, thanks to its more space-efficient shape yet smaller dimensions. Spec for spec, the HTK (O) plus is probably better equipped than the Mahindra XUV700 AX5, too.

However, if the Mahindra XUV700 was already your wishlist car and you're getting it at the price you want, you should go for it. It definitely has more road presence, a more powerful engine and comes with the peace of mind of a 5-star NCAP rating.

Its third row is not amazing, but if your family usage is limited, a little shuffling might be worth everything else it offers.

I have a family of six, including kids aged 11 and 6 and elderly parents. I’m looking for a petrol automatic car focused on comfort rather than performance, mainly for city use and one annual road trip. Annual usage is under 5,000 km, and my budget is preferably within ₹22 lakh. Which car should I choose?

The Kia Carens Clavis is the ideal pick for your requirements. It's a well-packaged MPV that offers comfortable seating across all three rows. A one-touch operation for the middle row seat fold makes access to the last row easy. Also, there is ample movement built into the middle row to balance space for all passengers.

The Clavis is also easy to drive and doesn't intimidate as some three-row SUVs can. From the Clavis line-up, the Turbo DCT HTX(O) is the one to buy.

Of the other three-row petrol-auto options, there's the Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector Plus, Mahindra XUV 7XO and Tata Safari.

We are a family of five and are planning to buy a seven-seater. My budget is ₹25 lakh, and I am confused between the Innova HyCross GX and the top-end Kia Carens Clavis. I will only be in India for about 2-3 months each year.

Considering your specific requirements, the Toyota Innova HyCross is the more sensible option for you. This Toyota car has a more spacious and comfortable cabin than the Kia Carens Clavis, and since you plan to use it sparingly, Toyota's bulletproof reliability should give you peace of mind.
The Innova Hycross petrol is powered by a 173hp, 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine that's paired with a CVT automatic transmission that has a claimed mileage of 16.3kpl. Toyota Innova Hycross petrol prices range from Rs 18.33 lakh to Rs 20.71 lakh (ex-showroom).

I am looking for a 7-seater car with a maximum budget of ₹25 lakh that is suitable for both city and highway driving. Which car would be the best option for my needs?

Considering your requirements, you should take a look at the Kia Carens Clavis. The MPV is a well-rounded package that offers a comfortable ride, a spacious and practical cabin for seven people and a lengthy list of features.

The Carens Clavis can be had with a 116hp, 1.5-litre diesel and a 160hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, both of which can be had with manual or automatic gearbox options. Alternatively, you can also consider the Hyundai Alcazar, which is mechanically identical to the Carens Clavis.

I am looking for a 7-seater petrol automatic with a price range of approximately ₹20-22 lakh (+/-10%). I plan to keep the car long term and am not keen on top-spec variants or gimmicky features. Please suggest suitable options.

If you are looking for a no-nonsense, spacious 7-seater petrol, you can opt for the Toyota Innova HyCross, the Petrol GX 7 Seat variant. It is in your budget. It is a proper 7-seater car, with all three rows usable by adults as well.
Toyota cars are known for their reliability, so keeping the car for the long term won't be a problem. The only downside is that the HyCross Petrol is not particularly known for fuel efficiency. If you want better fuel efficiency, you can look at the Kia Carens Clavis Turbo Petrol DCT.

I am confused between the 1.5 NA with IVT and the 1.5 turbo with 7-speed DCT. My usage will be mainly in the city, but after 1.5 years, it will be around 70% highway driving between Gurgaon and Delhi, with the rest in the city. I prefer a jerk-free drive, reliability, and a good overall driving experience.

While you haven't specified which car you are buying, we assume this choice is for either the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, or Kia Carens Clavis. Whichever the case, given your usage and requirements, we recommend the 1.5 IVT.
The Hyundai/Kia CVT gearbox, which uses a chain drive, feels more robust and responsive than others that use a belt-drive system, and the 115hp 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine feels more than sufficient for city or highway use. Yes, of course, the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol is more powerful and more exciting, but the 7-speed DCT gearbox is simply too jerky in low-speed use, which becomes frustrating after a while. In the long run, this gearbox will likely require more maintenance than the IVT, too.

Hi Team Autocar, I own a Tata Nexon (Petrol) and am looking to go for a larger 7-seater car as our family has just expanded by 2. My driving is mainly going to be in the city with frequent 100-150 km trips every month with the family. Which car offers the best third-row comfort and space within a ₹20 lakh budget? Thank you!

For your requirements, the Kia Carens Clavis is the best fit. It offers a genuinely usable third row, is easy to drive in the city, and remains comfortable on long trips. Given your usage, the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine should be adequate. If you want an automatic, you’ll need to opt for the turbo-petrol, but that will mean choosing a lower variant, as the top-spec Carens Clavis automatic will cross ₹20 lakh on-road.

I want to buy a seven-seater family car with a budget of around ₹15 lakh. Which one should I choose? I’m not a big fan of the Ertiga.

We'd suggest you check the Kia Carens Clavis. It's a very well-packaged MPV that offers good space for seven passengers. The Carens Clavis also feels superior to the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga in its cabin quality.
The base 1.5-litre petrol offers reasonable performance, but if you will drive on highways often, you should consider the stronger turbo-petrol whose added performance counts for a lot. Do note, your budget will allow the standard 1.5-petrol in higher HTK trim and the 1.5 turbo-petrol in lower HTE(O) trim. Features that you get on the HTK but not on the HTE(O) include auto climate control, front parking sensors, and LED DRLs, among others.

I am planning to buy a new 7-seater and am confused between the Kia Carens Clavis and Maruti Ertiga, both with naturally aspirated petrol engines. I do not like the new air-conditioning setup in the Ertiga. Could you advise on the Carens Clavis in terms of mileage, reliability, and long-term service costs?

The Kia Carens Clavis is a great 7-seater. It is very spacious, and even tall adults can sit in the last row without any issue. The cabin feels very premium, with high-quality materials used, and even the lower variants offer impressive standard equipment, which makes the entry-level 1.5-litre petrol versions excellent value for money.
The 1.5L petrol engine is smooth and refined, and in our tests, it accelerated quickly than the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, indicating better drivability too. This engine is shared with the Carens, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Hyundai Verna, and it has been quite reliable so far. Service and maintenance costs are also on par with, or even lower than, its rivals.
