I am a 50-year-old woman looking for a mini SUV with a budget of up to ₹8.5 lakh. We currently own an XL6 as our family car and are looking for a second car for me. My daily driving is around 10 to 15 km, with occasional highway trips. I want something comfortable and efficient.

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is a great option because of its refined and efficient engine and smooth gearbox. Alternatively, you could look at the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor, which is essentially a rebadged Fronx. The Hyundai Exter is also an option you could consider for its smoothness and overall user-friendliness.

I own a 2013 Hyundai i20 Sportz that has done only 17,000 km so far. Starting next year, my running will increase to about 1,000 km per month. Due to E20 fuel, the mileage has reduced to around 10 km/l. Should I buy an EV or an ICE car, or should I keep the current car? If I buy a new car, my budget is ₹10 lakh on-road.

Switching from E10 to E20 fuel reduces fuel efficiency, especially on pre-BS6 cars, so it's no surprise that you are refuelling more frequently and spending more at the pumps. It’s best to buy a new car, and for your budget, an ICE option is the best, as all ICE cars are now E20 compliant with engines designed to run on the higher ethanol blend.

An EV at this price point will be a compromise both in terms of size and range. For Rs. 10 lakh, go for the Hyundai Exter, which is a well-equipped car that drives exceptionally well. Being a Hyundai car, it will feel familiar as well.

My budget is ₹10-11 lakh, and this will be my first car. My monthly driving will be less than 200km. Please suggest a suitable option.

Without knowing other requirements, it is hard to pinpoint the ideal car for you. However, given that you are a new driver, we will give greater weightage to ease of use and hassle-free ownership. Based on body style, here are a few suitable options to consider:

Hi. Thanks for supporting and guiding. I have budget of 10 lakhs on road price. I am looking to purchase for occasional/weekend city drives only and very limited highway trips. I am also looking to buy automatic car since My wife will also use and she is new to driving and she will prefer that. My preference are Good Mileage, Basic good features, good interiors and exterior look. Will buy week to avail year end discount. I was looking after Exter, punch. Also open to other options. Pls suggest.

You can consider the Hyundai Exter AMT. It comes with one of the smoothest AMTs in the segment, offers a comfortable ride and has precise handling. The Exter feels stable and confident on the highway, while on the highway, it is easy to maneuver in city traffic.

It is also well equipped, with a thoughtfully designed cabin that makes excellent use of the available space.

My running is about 1,000 km per month, and I mostly work in villages in Rajasthan. Which car should I consider?

Since your monthly driving is around 1000km, it will be better if you go for a diesel car. If you prefer a manual gearbox, the Tata Nexon diesel is a good option for its good ride quality. But if you want an automatic, you can consider the Hyundai Venue diesel AT.

The ride quality of the 2025 Venue has been improved significantly, and now it gives a good ride quality on Indian roads.

The Nexon’s automatic option is an AMT, which has noticeable gearshift jerks and can become tiring on long drives.
In the smaller segment, the Tata Punch manual or the Hyundai Exter AMT are good alternatives.

Exter’s AMT is one of the smoothest AMTs in the market.

I am planning to buy a new AMT car with a total budget of ₹10 lakh, including insurance and road tax. My driving will be a mix of city and highway use, and I need good mileage. I travel up to 1,200 km per month. Please suggest a suitable option.

We would recommend the Hyundai Exter for several reasons. Firstly, it's the best AMT in its class and has less ‘head nod’ because the typical interruption of power between gearshifts is the least of all AMTs. The ride and handling are quite good, and the Exter feels quite planted for its size on the highway, whilst in the city it’s nice and manoeuvrable. Lastly, it has a well-equipped cabin that makes the most of the space.

We recommend the Hyundai Exter, a very well-rounded compact car with a refined engine, good features, and the AMT is the smoothest in the segment. The ride and handling are also excellent, and being a crossover, it has good ground clearance too to make easy work of bad roads, both on the highway and in the city. The Hyundai Exter SX variant will fit your budget.

Hi Autocar team, I am an amateur driver looking to buy my first car. I am planning to buy an automatic (AMT) car with a budget of ₹11 lakh in Bangalore. I will be driving this car 85% of the time in bumper-to-bumper city traffic. I am confused between the Toyota Glanza and the Hyundai Exter top variants. My top priorities are ease of driving for a new learner and decent city mileage. I know each car has its strengths, but which one do you think I should choose?

Those are both excellent options, and as you said, each has its strengths. The Hyundai Exter has the advantage of a taller seating position and a more compact overall footprint, both of which should serve you well as an amateur driver. Since that is your main priority, the Exter should be your pick, as mileage too will be good (ARAI rating of 19.2kpl), although not quite as good as the Glanza (ARAI rating of 22.94kpl).
The Toyota Glanza has a more premium and spacious interior, and a few more features too, but if that is lower down on your priority list, then stick with the Exter.

My Wagon R has run 70,000 km in 3 years. I now want to buy a new car. Please suggest a car that offers good mileage and comfort. I am 6 feet tall, and my budget is Rs 10 lakh.

You could look at a Tata Punch CNG, which is a high-riding sub-compact SUV with an excellent driving position. It also feels tough and confident over bad roads.
The other option you must check out is the Hyundai Exter CNG Duo, which is smoother, more refined, and delivers slightly better performance than the Punch.
