The MG Hector Tomahawk EV has been launched at a very attractive price. Although we haven't tested the Hector Tomahawk EV to comment on its performance, range or comfort, first impressions seem positive, and it seems very competent on paper. The Safari EV, on the other hand, hasn't been launched yet, and it's likely to be more expensive in comparison. So waiting for that might only delay your purchase.If you want a competent, proven seven-seater electric car, you could consider the Mahindra XEV 9S and the Kia Clavis EV. The former is more powerful and nicer to drive, while the latter is a lot more spacious in the third row and will be relatively more affordable.

Given your requirements, the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel automatic would be our recommendation. With an 80:20 city-to-highway ratio and 15,000 km a year, diesel still makes sense because the XUV 7XO's diesel engine is refined, efficient and well suited to both city driving and long highway runs. The 7XO also offers a usable third row, strong performance and a well-equipped cabin, making it a proper upgrade from your Venue.The Tata Safari is a strong alternative if you prioritise ride comfort and a more spacious third row, but the XUV 7XO offers a better overall ownership experience and a more modern feature set. The Hyundai Alcazar petrol automatic is the more refined and easier-to-drive option in the city, but its third row is tighter and it does not feel like as big a step up from the Venue.On the electric front, the Mahindra XEV 9S is worth considering if you have home charging and predictable daily usage, but at Rs. 25 lakh on-road you are likely to be looking at the lower variants, and the XUV 7XO diesel still makes more sense given your usage pattern.Overall, the XUV 7XO diesel automatic strikes the best balance between space, performance, efficiency and long-term ownership.

The MG Hector Tomahawk EV is a well-priced EV that's equipped with a 69.2 kWh battery and has a claimed range of 517km. On paper, it certainly looks promising; however, we're yet to test it extensively to pass a definitive judgement on its dynamics, comfort and real-world performance and range.Since your Rs 20-30 lakh budget permits, we'd still recommend you opt for the 70kWh or 79kWh battery version of the Mahindra XEV 9S. It has been on the market, and Mahindra EVs have been around for a while now. The Mahindra XEV 9S offers more tech and features; its motor is more powerful; and in our tests, it has consistently managed around 480km of real-world range.

Unfortunately, there are no plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or even strong hybrid options available in the market at this price point. Also, the only seven-seater EV that'll fit into your sub-Rs 20 lakh budget is the entry-level Kia Carens Clavis EV, which will be equipped with a small 42kWh battery, that should give you a real-world range of around 260-300km. Even so, if you can arrange for home charging, this is an excellent option - one that you should definitely consider as it will drastically reduce your running costs. If home charging isn't possible, and you still prefer the flexibility of an ICE vehicle, we'll recommend you to consider the diesel version of the Clavis EV instead. With a monthly running of 1,800-2,000 km and predominantly highway usage, a diesel 7-seater is still a very sensible choice.

The BYD Atto 3 is a well-built and reliable EV with a proven track record, but it is a 5-seater and does not offer the same level of practicality, feature set or even the performance as the XEV 9S. The VinFast VF7 is an interesting option, but you can only get the entry-level variant in your budget, and while it has strong performance, as a package, it still trails behind the XEV 9S. Since you want a 7-seater, the Tata Sierra EV is ruled out considering its 5-seater layout. The Mahindra XEV 9S is the best choice in your budget and given your requirements. It offers a large battery, good range and a practical 7-seat layout, making it a sensible family EV. However, it is worth noting that the third row is best suited for children or occasional use, and the boot space is limited with all seats up. Within Rs 25 lakh, you can get the Pack One Above variant with the bigger 79kWh battery pack and a decent feature set. Given your priorities of value for money, reliability and hassle-free ownership, the Mahindra XEV 9S is the best fit if you need a 7-seater.
