I want to buy an SUV; my usage is 70:30, mostly within cities like Bangalore, and a few times off-road. I’m ok to stretch the budget up to 60 lakhs around I’m confused between Kodiaq, Hycross, Fortuner, BMW X1, or wait for the new Fortuner if it is released by this year's end. Can anyone give me suggestions?

Pick the Skoda Kodiaq. Your usage is mostly in Bengaluru city, and the Kodiaq is the best all-rounder of this lot. It's spacious, comfortable, refined and well equipped, but also comes with AWD and enough ground clearance to handle bad roads and the odd trail without fuss. It rides and handles far better than ladder-frame SUVs like the Fortuner, feels properly premium inside, and is far less tiring in traffic. The Fortuner is unstoppable off-road, but in the city, it is big, bouncy and heavy to drive, and you will pay more for less comfort. The next-gen Fortuner is unlikely to go on sale this year. The BMW X1 is great for city use, but it is not very powerful, and FWD, which isn't great for off-road use; also, the space is tighter than the others. The Innova Hycross hybrid is the most spacious and practical, with the best mileage of the lot, but it lacks that SUV road presence and status.Overall, the Kodiaq is the best choice, but bear in mind petrol costs in heavy traffic will be higher than the HyCross, and the third row is best for kids only.

I want to buy a sedan with an average annual running of around 5,000 km, including long-distance drive. My budget is under Rs. 50 lakh. Please suggest a suitable option. I am looking for a replacement for my X1 and would like something that is equally good or better.

There aren't many sedans left in the market, especially at that price range, but with your low yearly use, and a budget of Rs 50 lakh cap, the Audi A4 is the right fit. It feels just as solid and quiet as your BMW X1, but with a comfier ride and a quieter cabin on highways. With your usage, a petrol engine's running costs should be palatable, and the A4’s seats and sound insulation make long drives easy. It is also easy to drive in the city, with light controls and good all-around visibility for a sedan. Alternatively, the Toyota Camry - though it doesn't have a luxury badge - is among the best all-rounders for the money, offering space, comfort, mileage and tech on par with the best. Two things to note coming from the X1: you sit lower, so the view of the road is not as high, and speed breakers need a bit more care than in your old, taller car. If you want to stay in the BMW family and enjoy a sportier feel, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is also within budget. It is fun and feels premium, but the back seat is less spacious, the engine is less powerful, and the ride is firmer than the A4. If you are open to an EV and have home charging, the BYD Seal brings strong performance and a very premium cabin under Rs 50 lakh.

I want to buy a pre-owned car with a budget of Rs. 45 lakh. My current options are a BMW 520d Luxury Line with around 50,000km on the odometer, a BMW X1 18d, and a Mercedes-Benz C200, both with around 30,000km driven. I belong to a joint family and currently own two Skoda Laura 1.9 TDI models (one PD automatic and the other DI manual). The new car will mainly serve as a family car and will also be used for highway trips at least twice a month. I am looking for an executive diesel sedan or a cheaper version of the Kodiaq and Tayron

Verified

Go for the BMW 520d Luxury Line with 50,000 km; for your joint-family highway runs, it gives the roomiest rear seat, best long-distance comfort, and relaxed diesel torque. It will feel like a fitting upgrade to your Laura TDIs, and sadly there are no more diesel executive sedans available now, so it's something worth getting while you still can. While the Kodiaq and Tayron are capable in their own right, they can't quite replicate the same solidity of a previous-generation 5-series and given its intended use as a long-distance family car, the fuel bills of these large petrol SUVs will be astronomical. Of the other used cars, the X1 is simply too small and the C-Class simply won't feel as premium or roomy as the 5 Series; notably in the rear seat. 50,000km is not a huge amount for a used car, provided it has been well taken care of, and the 5-series' boot is large and well shaped too.

I am looking to replace my 2021 Tucson. My current usage is not more than 1,000 km a month, mostly on the highway. My budget is ₹50-60 lakh, and I have shortlisted the Mercedes-Benz GLA, BMW X1, and Audi Q3. Looking for your guidance.

Verified

We'd recommend you narrow down your options to the Mercedes GLA 220d and Q3, both of which have strong powertrains and are a touch nicer to drive than the BMW X1.Between the two, the Mercedes-Benz car has a more well-appointed cabin and a spacious interior. The Audi Q3's cabin is also high on quality, although it lacks flair. Where the Q3 shines is the ride comfort. Go for the Mercedes if you are willing to pick a diesel engine - you will appreciate the 220d's effortless performance on the highway. However, if you need a petrol, the Audi Q3's turbo petrol is far superior to what Mercedes and BMW offer, hence it gets our vote.

I am confused between the Mercedes GLA and BMW X1. Which one offers the latest features and a better servicing experience?

Verified
34w

Both the Mercedes-Benz GLA and BMW X1 offer a strong list of features. You get auto LED headlamps, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate, connected car tech, ambient lighting, and even some ADAS features on both cars. The Mercedes has an advantage with a 360-degree camera. The BMW gets only a rear-view camera but offers lane-departure warning, which the Mercedes does not. After that, the choice mainly comes down to interior and exterior design and the way the features are laid out. The BMW’s i-Drive infotainment system is known to be notoriously complicated to use. It should also be noted that the Mercedes has more powerful engines than the BMW. As for service, it is highly dependent on your location and the specific service centre. Both brands reportedly have both good and bad service centres around the country.

Sir, I currently own two cars, a 2022 XUV700 diesel manual and a 2024 BMW X1 diesel. We are a family of five, and I plan to keep only one car since maintaining two is becoming difficult. Which one should I keep, or should I sell both and opt for a new one? I’m confused. Please advise.

Verified

It would make sense to keep your BMW X1 and sell the Mahindra XUV700. While the XUV700 is cheaper to maintain and offers the added flexibility of a third row, the X1 is newer, has a more premium cabin, provides adequate space for five people, and carries the advantage of BMW’s brand value.

I want to upgrade my car. My budget is 60 to 80 lakhs. What will be your advice. Land Rover Discovery sports diesel or BMW X1 or BMW X3 or shall I wait for Audi q5 to come. Or can I look for meridian

Verified

Without knowing your exact requirements, it’s hard to suggest one outright. Among the options you’ve listed, the BMW X3 is the newest and offers the most features, though it’s also the most expensive. The Land Rover Discovery Sport has the advantage of a third row of seats, though it’s best suited for children. The BMW X1 will be the easiest to drive in the city. The next-gen Audi Q5 is still some time away, with its launch expected around 2026. The Jeep Meridian, meanwhile, won’t feel as premium or as refined as the other options you’ve mentioned.

I want to upgrade my car and have a budget of ₹60-80 lakhs. Should I go for the Land Rover Discovery Sport Diesel, BMW X1, BMW X3, wait for the upcoming Audi Q5, or consider the Jeep Meridian?

Verified

In your budget, it's best to go for the BMW X3, although you might have to stretch by Rs 2-3 lakh. It is the newest SUV, offering a strong 2.0-litre diesel engine, plus the latest tech and a spacious and comfortable cabin. The Discovery Sport is a capable car, but it is quite old now and its age shows; if you need a third row of seats, however, do consider it. The X1, in comparison, is a segment below and offers less powerful engines and, of course, less space. The new Audi Q5 launch is some time away, and while it is capable, note that it will only come in petrol guise, not diesel. You could also consider the Mercedes-Benz GLC, whose 2.0-litre diesel is also strong, and it offers a spacious and luxurious cabin as well.

Hello team, I have a budget of around 50-55 lakh and am looking for a premium luxury car. I would prefer a sedan, but I'm also open to an SUV. The Audi A4 fits my budget, but I'm hesitant because it has been discontinued in some international markets, and the current model has been on sale for around five years. Which vehicle would you recommend?

Verified

Skip the Audi A4 and go for the BMW X1. It is the freshest luxury model you’ll get around Rs. 50-55 lakh, so you won’t be buying something that already feels old, and it will age better than a 5-year-old A4. Since you’re open to an SUV, the BMW car makes daily life easy. It is compact enough to drive in the city, comfortable on bad roads, and still relaxed at highway speeds. It also gives you more space and a bigger boot than any sedan in this budget, which helps if you have a family or do airport runs often.Do note, though, that the X1's performance is just alright. The X1’s engines are fine, not thrilling, and the cabin doesn’t feel as plush as the bigger German sedans. If you must have a sedan at this price, look at the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. It is newer than the A4, sharp to drive, and usually fits the budget, but rear seat space is tight.

I currently own an Audi A4 Premium Plus Petrol and have been using it for the last three years. The car has now crossed the 50,000 km mark. I am now confused about whether I should continue using the same car for a few more years or upgrade to a newer German luxury SUV within a budget of around ₹60-65 lakh.

Verified
7w

With 50,000km covered in 3 years, the smarter move is to keep your Audi A4 for another couple of years unless you clearly need a taller car for rough roads or easier entry. At this age and mileage, a well-serviced and carefully driven A4 still has plenty of life. It is quiet and smooth on highways, and you avoid another big hit in value right now.The other issue is that, on a budget of Rs 60-65 lakh, your only available SUV options from the German luxury brands are compact SUVs like the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, which will feel like a downgrade from your A4 in terms of size and space. You will have to up your budget by at least Rs 10 lakh to move into the next segment of luxury SUVs. Better alternatives, if you don't mind a non-luxury badge, are the Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron. They offer similar quality levels to their more luxurious counterparts, as well as equitable levels of comfort and refinement. They even use the same EA888 2.0-litre petrol engine as your A4. What's more, for much less money, you get far more space and an even longer list of features. You sacrifice some snob value, but you get a more rounded product.
