The Volkswagen Taigun, which turned five years old last month after its launch in September 2021, has surpassed the 1 lakh domestic sales milestone. As per SIAM wholesale numbers, the midsize SUV has sold 99,095 units till the end of September 2026. The 905 units needed to achieve 100,000 sales were bridged in the first half of October. Volkswagen India has also exported 52,751 units, which takes combined domestic and export sales to 1,51,846 units.

  1. FY2023 saw the highest domestic sales of 21,736 units.
  2. Exports were highest in FY2025, at 14,903 units.
  3. Facelift launched in 2026 with an updated look, new features, and a new gearbox.

Volkswagen Taigun sales in India

As the wholesale numbers (see data table above) reveal, FY2023 was Taigun’s best fiscal year to date, with sales of 21,736 units, when it accounted for 53 percent of VW India’s passenger vehicle sales of 41,326 units. Since then, however, demand has tapered; FY2024’s 20,485 units were down 6 percent YoY and FY2025’s 19,910 units were down 3 percent YoY.

FY2026 saw Taigun sales fall to their lowest –12,912 units, down 35 percent YoY – when it was the second highest-selling model for VW India after the Virtus sedan (22,959 units) and ahead of the Tiguan (1,126 units) and Tayron (238 units). A likely reason for the slowed-down sales could be that the Taigun feels a segment lower compared to the midsize SUV segment leaders such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, or the Maruti Victoris.

Nevertheless, in the current fiscal year’s first six months, the Taigun (7,163 units) has logged 4 percent YoY growth (April-September 2025: 6,891 units). The uptick in H1 FY2027 sales can be attributed to the launch of the facelifted model in mid-April 2026, with the midsize SUV receiving subtle styling updates, more features, and a new automatic gearbox.

Volkswagen Taigun crosses 1 lakh domestic sales milestone The MY2026 Taigun has sold 7,163 units till September, up 4 percent year on year.

The Taigun was VW's first midsize SUV developed on the MQB A0 IN platform under the strategic India 2.0 project. It is a sister SUV to the Skoda Kushaq, which has sold 104,863 units since its June 2021 launch.

Autocar India’s buyer’s guide commentary for the MY2026 Taigun states: “A new look, more features and a new AT gearbox for the 1.0 TSI engine address many of the Taigun’s lesser points. The VW feels as solid as ever, and remains one of the enjoyable midsize SUVs to drive, especially with the 1.5 TSI engine. However, it’s not as spacious as many rivals and trails on a few feel-good features too.”

Poll of the month

There will be 12 new Citroen and Jeep launches by 2030. Will this boost interest in these brands?

Yes, fresh models is just what's needed.
Only if sales and service expands alongside.
Won't be enough. Established brands are too strong.
