I want to upgrade from Wagon R CNG to a new car with a budget of Rs 12 to 15 lakh. I normally drive in the city, with occasional highway trips. I preferably want a sedan. Annual usage is 10,000 to 15,000 km. Also suggest EVs.
Since you prefer a sedan, the Volkswagen Virtus would be a good option to consider. It has a spacious interior, high ground clearance, and the Highline trim will fit in your budget too. It gets cruise control, LED headlamps, 16-inch alloys and wireless charging amongst other features.
The 1.0-litre TSI engine has good performance for the city and highway, and the manual gearbox is light and slick to use. This Volkswagen car offers a larger 521-litre boot and returns around 11-13 kpl of average fuel economy.

We presently own a 2014 Honda City Diesel as our secondary car and an Innova Crysta Diesel as our primary vehicle. Our usage is approximately 60% city and 40% highway. We are considering purchasing a new secondary car; however, upgrade options for sedan enthusiasts are quite limited. Kindly suggest suitable new car options within a budget of ₹20 lakhs.
You're right, the choice of sedans available in the market today has dwindled considerably in recent years, and the midsize sedan segment is being propped up by just four candidates. The good news is that all four of them are expected to be updated in 2026, which should breathe some life into them in the form of updated looks and more features, and whichever car you choose, we recommend waiting until the updated version is launched.
If you're a fan of the Honda City's no-nonsense approach, you'll like the new one, which will feel like a step up from your 2014 model, especially in terms of space and features. However, its single-engine option is limiting, and it is not as fun to drive as before.
The Hyundai Verna is far more versatile and gets an even longer list of features, but it too errs on the safe and unexciting side, even with its 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. Your best bets are the Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus, which, with the facelifts, will get a much-needed features upgrade.
They are excellent to drive, yet spacious and comfortable, and a particular highlight is their punchy TSI turbo petrol engines. Choosing between them is a matter of preference, as they are the same car underneath, but either of these is what you should choose.

I am confused between the Hyundai Verna SX Plus IVT and the Volkswagen Virtus 1.0 Topline automatic. Please help.
In a nutshell, the Hyundai Verna IVT makes for a friendlier city car, while the Volkswagen Virtus AT is the more exciting car to drive.
The Verna has a smoother gearbox, which works very well with the engine at typical city speeds. It works well as a highway car too, so long as easygoing driving is your style. The Verna also packs in more features for less money.
The Volkswagen Virtus has a punchier engine and feels more enthusiastic to drive. Its 6-speed gearbox is also sporty in its shifts. However, the engine-gearbox does have a tendency to lurch forward at crawling speeds, and this is something you have to be mindful of.
Do note, the Virtus 1.0 is due to get a new 8-speed automatic gearbox later this year and could be worth waiting for. The model will also see feature additions.

I own the Virtus 1.5 GT. My question relates to driving the car for short distances. I’ve heard that diesel engine cars need to be driven on an open road occasionally to clean up the DPF filter. Do I need to do something similar for my turbo-petrol car, or is it okay to drive it in city traffic at slow speeds for extended periods?
Petrol cars don’t have a DPF filter, which, as the name suggests, diesel particulate filter- only applies to diesel cars. Your turbo petrol doesn’t have any such issues to worry about.
What you can do to keep your Volkswagen Virtus engine in top shape is to warm the engine properly on a regular basis. The trouble with very short trips is that the engine doesn’t warm up, which can lead to moisture and small amounts of unburnt fuel accumulating in the oil over time, which isn’t ideal for long-term engine health.
But a 20-30 minute run is enough for the engine to reach full operating temperature, which will keep everything running fine. Also, if you stick to your oil change schedule, with the correct VW-spec oil and decent fuel, your engine can last a lifetime.

I have a budget of around ₹30 lakh and am more inclined towards a sedan rather than an SUV, but currently there are no good options. Are there any expected this year?
Sadly, there are no all-new Rs 25-30 lakh sedans lined up for launch this year. However, slightly lower down the price ladder, we will see the launch of updated versions of the Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus over the year.
There's way more choice for the same budget in SUVs with options spanning petrol, diesel, hybrid and EV powertrains as well as with two and three rows of seating, and 4x2 and 4x4.

The 1.5TSI versions of the Skoda Kushaq, Skoda Slavia, Volkswagen Taigun and Volkswagen Virtus, will certainly bring a smile to your face with their performance as well as dynamic prowess.
All these feel similar from behind the wheel, so pick the body style you prefer - sedan or SUV. Out of these, the Kushaq is likely to get updated in the coming weeks, so you may want to check that out before making your decision.
On the other hand, if you want a car that looks sporty, drives well, and has features like ADAS, you could also consider a Hyundai Creta N Line and Verna.

I want to buy a premium US or European car with a budget of around ₹20-25 lakh. Please advise.
It's hard to recommend a car without knowing more about your requirements, like space, mileage, number of seats, etc. However, within your specific budget, no US options are available. From the European manufacturers, only the Skoda and Volkswagen cars are there.
We would recommend you look at the Skoda Kushaq or Volkswagen Taigun, which are essentially the same SUV. Also, if you would prefer a sedan, the Skoda Slavia and its sister car, the Volkswagen Virtus, are the options.
These sister models of Skoda and Volkswagen are essentially the same, sharing all their mechanical components and a lot of the exterior and interior bits too. Thus, choosing between them would come down to the level of dealer support in your area and your own preference in terms of the individual car's style.

Hey, team Autocar. I am 27 years old and currently own a Nexon petrol manual as my practical car and a Jimny manual as my fun car. I am now looking to buy a third car and am confused between the Harrier petrol manual and the Virtus GT manual. I take two road trips every year (approximately 5000 km each), one with my dad and another with my family of four. I want something bigger and more engaging for highway drives. My budget is around ₹35 lakh. Please help me choose.
The Tata Harrier petrol with the new 170hp 1.5 turbo-petrol is quite quick and enjoyable to drive. The 6-speed manual gives the pleasure and engagement only a manual can give, so this is a good option.
However, since you already have two SUVs, you might want to consider a sedan whose dynamics, thanks to a lower centre of gravity, are far superior to those of an SUV. In that case, the Volkswagen Virtus GT is a great choice, offering fantastic performance, excellent handling, and safety. It is also lighter and more agile than the Harrier and more engaging to drive. Priced well within your budget, you will have money left over to spend on accessories.

Hi. I have owned a Swift Dzire petrol for the last 10 years and I love sedans. I plan to upgrade with a budget of around ₹20 lakh. I mostly do mixed driving in the city and on highways. Which car should I buy?
There is minimal choice in the sedan market today, and your best options are the Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus, which have strong petrol engines, excellent ride and handling and a comfortable cabin.
They are ideal for your mix of city and highway drives and come with a high level of safety, too. If you are a regular driver and don’t want extra performance, then the 1.0 versions paired to the 6-speed automatic will work well for you.
Both the Slavia and Virtus are identical except for the design and a few feature differences across the variants. So the one to choose depends on your comfort with the dealer, the design, your affinity with the brand and the best deals you get.

I currently drive a Kia Seltos HTE (base variant) and get around 8 to 9 kmpl in city conditions in Kolkata. Are there any hybrid options expected in the Seltos segment in the next 8 to 9 months? Will sedans like the Virtus or Verna get hybrid options? Are there plans for a Honda Elevate hybrid, MG Hector hybrid, or a Creta hybrid?
Unfortunately, there are no new hybrid midsize SUVs launching in the next 8-9 months; however, they will come later. The new Kia Seltos hybrid is coming, but not before late 2026 or early 2027, as Kia is working on localising the hybrid system to lower the price before the launch. The Honda Elevate will not receive a hybrid powertrain until its next generation, which is unlikely before 2028.
The Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia could eventually get hybrid technology, but that too is still a few years away. The Hyundai Verna is unlikely to receive a hybrid even with its upcoming facelift. The MG Hector Hybrid is in limbo and was not launched with the recent update, which proved to be just a minor facelift.
The Hyundai Creta will likely get a hybrid, but only when the next-generation model launches, likely around 2027. Tata and Mahindra are both said to be working on hybrid powertrains, but again, with launches only in the distant future.
