Volkswagen Tayron Expert Review
The Volkswagen Tayron is VW’s multiple-people-mover option to the 5-seater Tiguan in India. It promises more cabin space, enhanced comfort, and a relaxed character compared to the Tiguan, which is only available in the sporty R-Line trim. As a CKD import, the Tayron comes with a higher price tag relative to some rivals, but it compensates with superior build quality, thanks to its international origin. Refer to our detailed expert reviews by Autocar India for further insights into the Tayron.
Volkswagen Tayron pros and cons
We like
Tough build and premium interior
Peppy petrol engine and easy handling
Packs in all new-age essential features
We don't like
Third row access is inconvenient and space is tight
Few physical controls for commonly used functions
No diesel engine option
Volkswagen Tayron expert review
You can think of the Volkswagen Tayron as an XL-sized Tiguan, with the added length allowing for a third row of seats.
There’s a clear visual connection to the Tiguan, but look closer and you’ll spot the differences. The Matrix LED headlights and the slimmer panel between them are unique, and the full-width light bar, illuminated VW logo and R-Line bumper with gloss mesh and aero detailing add visual drama.
The biggest change is in profile. A 109mm longer wheelbase and extended rear overhang stretch the Tayron to 4,792mm, making it 253mm longer than the Tiguan. The added length gives it real road presence, complemented by clean surfacing, swelling shoulder lines and tasteful silver accents. At the rear, the intricate LED tail lamps, light bar and glowing logo look premium, though the hidden exhaust tips disappoint.
Under the skin, the Tayron shares its platform, size and powertrain with the Skoda Kodiaq.

Step inside and it’s familiar Volkswagen territory. Build quality feels solid, materials are premium to the touch and the seats are plush and supportive. The steering wheel retains physical buttons, while Alcantara-like trim and superb ambient lighting lift the cabin ambience, especially at night.
The minimalist dashboard is dominated by a 15-inch touchscreen that controls almost everything, including climate and seat functions. While the layout is intuitive and the screen well positioned, the lack of physical controls takes getting used to. A rotary knob on the centre console handles volume, drive modes and lighting themes, while a stalk-mounted gear selector frees up storage space.
Practicality is strong, with dual wireless chargers, ample storage bins and large door pockets. Second-row space is generous, with slide and recline functions, though the centre seat is compromised by a high tunnel. Third-row access is tight and space is best suited for short trips. Boot space, however, is excellent, with 850 litres available with the third row folded.

The Tayron gets powered, ventilated and memory front seats, a 360-degree camera, powered tailgate, panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon audio and three-zone climate control. ADAS includes adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist, auto emergency braking and auto park, alongside nine airbags and a full safety suite.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol producing 204hp and 320Nm, paired with a seven-speed DSG and AWD. The EA888 engine is smooth, responsive and quick, with 0-100kph in a claimed 7.3 seconds. Refinement is excellent and the gearbox works seamlessly on highways.

Fuel economy figures are yet to be revealed, but spirited driving will see efficiency drop to the mid single digits.
6
Drive modes alter the Tayron’s character, though damper control is missing. The VW SUV remains stable, predictable and easy to drive despite its size, with confident highway manners and nice ride comfort.
8
The locally assembled Tayron R-Line is expected to be priced around Rs 46–48 lakh (ex-showroom), and a more affordable version will follow in a few months. The Tayron isn’t a perfect seven-seater, but as a premium, spacious and polished SUV, it makes a compelling case for buyers in this segment.
