What to expect from India-bound Volkswagen Tayron R-Line

Volkswagen has revealed teasers of its upcoming Tayron SUV for India, and has confirmed that it will be launched in Q1 of 2026 in a sporty R-Line avatar. The Tayron is essentially a 7-seater version of the Tiguan, sharing the same MQB Evo platform. This will bring Volkswagen back in the three-row executive SUV segment since the discontinuation of the Tiguan Allspace in 2021. Here's everything you need to know about the SUV launching in the coming months.

1. What is the Volkswagen Tayron expected price?

Tayron could likely be priced between Rs 45 lakh and Rs 50 lakh.

Expect the Volkswagen Tayron to be priced between Rs 45 lakh and Rs 50 lakh, ex-showroom. Unlike the Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line, which came to our market as a CBU (completely built unit), the Tayron will be locally assembled from CKD (completely knocked down) kits at Volkswagen's Aurangabad facility. Therefore, it can be expected to be more affordable than the fully imported Tiguan R Line.

2. What engine and gearbox options will the Volkswagen Tayron have?

Could get the Tiguan's 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine.

The Volkswagen Tayron is expected to come with the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that was offered with the Tiguan R-Line. It produces 204hp and 320Nm of torque and is mated to a 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox. It could also come with Volkswagen's 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system.

3. What will the Volkswagen Tayron exterior look like?

Takes styling cues from the Tiguan R-Line in a larger footprint.

Uncamouflaged spy shots of the Tayron in India have already shown us what the SUV will look like. The Tayron's exterior is largely similar to that of its 5-seat equivalent, but to accommodate an extra row of seats, it's slightly larger than the Tiguan in terms of length, width and wheelbase. At the front, it gets a connected light bar with an illuminated VW logo and a wide grille lower down. The model undergoing testing had the same 19-inch wheels as the Tiguan, and this too will come in the R-Line trim with sporty front and rear bumpers, and red detailing. The rear looks nearly identical to the Tiguan, but its connected LED tail-lamp gets different detailing.

4. What will the Volkswagen Tayron interior be like?

Interior expected to be to its five-seat counterpart.

On the inside, the cabin layout of the Tayron is expected to be identical to the Tiguan R-Line. While the latter comes with an all black interior with contrast stitching, the former could come with different trims and upholstery. The features list is expected to include a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system that houses all functions, a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, three-zone climate control, massaging front seats, wireless charging for up to two phones, and Level 2 ADAS. 

The key difference, however, will be in the seating layout. The Tayron will have a 7-seat configuration as opposed to the Tiguan's 5-seat configuration. The Tayron could also come with some additional features over the Tiguan R Line such as ventilation for the front seats, a powered driver's seat, a 360-degree camera and a powered tailgate. These were misses on the latter on account of it being a full import from the UK, but Volkswagen will have the opportunity to correct this with the Tayron.

5. What are the Volkswagen Tayron rivals?

Upon launch, The Tayron will compete with rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq (Rs 40 lakh-Rs 45.95 lakh), Jeep Meridian (Rs 23.33 lakh-36.21 lakh) and the MG Gloster (Rs 38.33 lakh-43.74 lakh) in India.
