I want to purchase a new ev car under 20 lakhs and i have daily run of 80 kms. I want to purchase before 10th march

Considering you already own a Honda City, which is a large and spacious sedan, we would recommend the MG Windsor EV in the bigger battery Pro version. The Windsor is a ground up EV and offers one of the best senses of space for its price and size. It is well equipped and, with the larger 52.9 kWh battery, you can realistically expect a range of over 350 km, which is more than sufficient for your daily 80 km commute. It is also a comfortable car for four adults, and the boot is generously sized.
If you want something smaller, the Tata Punch EV is also worth considering, especially with the long range 35 kWh battery pack. This should deliver a real world range of around 230 km. The Punch is a pleasant car to drive, and if you are planning to buy one, this is also a good time as Tata is about to launch the facelifted version. Do note that deliveries may extend beyond your preferred 10 March timeline.

At present, I own a Celerio AMT with CNG. My monthly running is around 2,000km. I am planning to book the Punch EV facelift. Mostly, I travel on highways, covering around 200-250km to and fro. Very occasionally, I travel 300km one way to Goa. I believe there are no charging issues on my routes. What would you suggest? Please advise. Amol.

With the kind of extensive driving that you do, we do not recommend choosing an electric car. As per our extensive real-world tests, the Tata Punch EV LR's highway range is about 216km. While this was a test of the pre-facelift version with the 35kWh battery, we don't anticipate this number will go up by a huge amount after the facelift.
Even though you may have chargers on your routes that allow you to keep the battery topped up to complete your journey, given your usage, you will have to do this very frequently. Apart from the inconvenience, this also wears down the EV's battery much quicker, which in turn gradually lowers the range and eventually, the resale value.
If you have your eyes set on only an EV, we would recommend one with a larger battery and longer range. However, we would recommend you choose a fuel-efficient petrol or diesel car that fits in your budget instead.

Daily 120kms up and down highway running. Planning to buy new face-lift tata EV punch or EV nexon. Is it a good BUY to save money. Have own house and parking. Have an old Nissan Terrano diesel 2015 around 1.5L kms. Spending around 20k a month on diesel. Planning EV to save money. What do you recommend

For your daily running and usage, an EV makes absolute sense, especially since you have access to home charging. The new Tata Punch EV is ideal if you are driving yourself and don’t need a lot of space.

It offers a real world range of over 300 km, so your daily 120 km commute can be comfortably completed on a single charge without any range anxiety. Also, when charged at home, the running cost of an EV is roughly 20 per cent of a diesel car, which translates into substantial monthly savings.

What are my options if I wish to replace my 1.5-year-old Hyundai Exter with an EV? The car will be used sparingly and only in the city.

We're not sure if you are looking to upgrade or have a replacement EV similar in size. If it's the latter, the Tata Punch EV would be a good option for you. The electric Punch will soon be updated, and you can check this out.
If you are looking for something bigger, the MG Windsor would be a good pick, offering you more space inside than your Hyundai Exter.

Hello Autocar team. We are a family of five and mostly chauffeur-driven. Our daily running is almost 70 km. We want to buy an EV to save on fuel cost, primarily for city driving and occasional round trips of about 180-200 km to our native place. We have shortlisted the Punch EV Empowered S Long Range, the XUV3XO EV AX5, and the Windsor. Which one should we choose? We prefer comfort, safety, and service reliability. This will be our second car.

While the Tata Punch EV is a good all-rounder, it is perhaps a size too small for a family of 5 or to be chauffeur driven in. The Mahindra XUV 3XO EV and Windsor have far more spacious cabins, but then the Mahindra is low on boot space when it comes to your 180-200km round trip. However, this would still be our pick as it has a spacious cabin for 5, tough chassis and comfortable ride quality.

The Windsor may be more spacious on the whole, but its suspension and ride are quite stiff, and its large touchscreen, which controls the entire car, is full of bugs and glitches. Moreover, in standard guise, it has a very low range, and you would have to move up to the Pro version, which will increase your budget. Also consider the Tata Nexon EV, which, though expensive, feels like a more complete car than any of these.

I need a car that suits my 60km daily city commute, along with weekend highway drives. It should be fuel-efficient, and my budget is Rs 15 lakh. I am looking for an EV.

The Tata Punch EV is a good pick for your requirements. It's an easy-to-drive electric car whose relatively small size comes in handy in city confines. You could get a top-spec Punch EV within your budget with all the bells and whistles, like a 10.25-inch touchscreen, 360-degree camera, sunroof and leatherette seats.
If you'd prefer something larger, more powerful and with more range, there's the Tata Nexon EV, the Creative 45 variant to consider. It's down on features to a fully-loaded Punch EV, though.

I am planning to buy a new car, and this will be my first time purchasing one. I would appreciate your guidance in choosing the most suitable car type for my needs. I am particularly interested in understanding: A) Which car type would be best for a first-time buyer (such as a hatchback, sedan, or SUV)? B) Which fuel type would be most suitable and cost-effective (petrol, diesel, hybrid, or electric)? I am looking for a car that is reliable, easy to maintain, fuel-efficient, and comfortable for daily use. Please let me know what options you would recommend and if there are any models you suggest for beginners.

As a first-time car buyer, it's best to go for a model that is easy to drive and maintain. Given our traffic conditions, especially in Bengaluru, where you reside, a compact SUV with a high-seating position is best for threading through traffic.
If you can set up a home charger at your residence or office, an electric car is ideal. Not only are EVs easy to maintain and have very low running costs, but the characteristics of an electric motor make them the easiest cars to drive. You don’t have to worry about gears, hesitation from the engine or gearbox. Instead, you get instant response and smoothness that no combustion engine car can match.
The facelifted Tata Punch EV, which is compact, has a high seating position and good all-around visibility makes the most sense for you.

I am looking for an automatic electric car under ₹13 lakh. My daily commute is around 40km. Which EV should I buy?

There aren't too many electric cars below the Rs 13 lakh mark, just the MG Comet, the Tata Tiago EV, and the Tata Punch EV.
If you plan to keep your current Maruti Suzuki Celerio, the MG Comet will do well as an intra-city commuter and as a good second car. However, if you need this as a primary car, we would recommend the electric Tata Punch. The four doors make it more practical, and the larger wheels and better high-speed performance give you the flexibility to take it on small trips out of the city too.
You will get the medium range within your budget, but if you can stretch it, the long range would make good sense as a primary car.

I previously owned an Omni, which was mostly used by my father. I’m now planning to buy a new car. My monthly running will be around 1,500 km-about 1,200 km for daily office commuting near the outskirts of Hyderabad (via ORR), and the rest for family use. Usually, there will be 4-5 occupants, and very occasionally 6. I’m considering the Renault Triber or the upcoming Nissan Magnite (7-seater options within my budget), but I’m unsure due to feedback from friends about Renault–Nissan’s part quality and long-term reliability. Since I don’t plan to sell the car in the future, my priority is low maintenance, good mileage, and long-term reliability rather than features. I’m also open to 5-seater options if these 7-seaters aren’t advisable, for example, the Maruti Dzire. Additionally, I’d like to know whether the Tata Punch EV (base variant) would be a good choice. I’m open to other suggestions and would appreciate detailed advice.

The recently facelifted Renault Triber and upcoming Nissan Gravite are both good options for your usage. Essentially the same car under the skin, they are surprisingly spacious given their sub-4m length and overall size.

The advantage of getting a 7-seater in this case is that, for your occasional 6-seat use, you will be able to manage with this car, and for the rest of the time, your 4-5 passengers will be more comfortable, and you can carry some luggage too.

As a commuter, its compact dimensions make it easy to manage around town. Renault and Nissan's quality and reliability have come a long way since the early days. Though not quite up to the gold standard of certain other brands, are not a serious issue in the slightest.

The Punch EV is a good choice, too. But for the reasons mentioned above, as well as your 1,500km monthly usage, we'd recommend sticking to a 7-seater and an ICE vehicle.

I own two cars, a Honda City and a Baleno, both mainly used for city driving. My total petrol expense is around ₹17,000 per month, with the Baleno being used more frequently than the City. I am now looking to buy a trouble-free EV, but am confused between the Tata Punch EV, the MG Windsor EV, and the new 3XO EV. I live in an independent house, so home charging is not an issue. Please guide me.

Electric cars work particularly well for city driving, and all three options you’re considering are solid choices. In our real-world range test, the Tata Punch EV (Long Range) delivered around 242 km in urban conditions, which is more than adequate for everyday city use. It is a compact car, though, so if the smaller size isn’t a concern for you, the Punch EV is a sensible option.
If cabin space is a higher priority, the Windsor EV is the better fit. In our range test, it returned a real-world figure of about 327 km in the city. The Pro variant is likely to offer even better range, while also providing a noticeably roomier cabin and a more comfortable overall experience.
