I own a 2019 Baleno RS, which I am considering upgrading because of its light build and lackluster handling despite having a nice engine. My usage is mostly in the city with occasional trips to the hills, as I use my Virtus GT for highways. I am considering the Hyundai Venue Diesel top‑variant automatic because it has the best drivetrain option of the lot, but the ₹17 lakh plus on‑road price doesn’t seem fully justified to me. Safety and comfort are my priorities, and I am nearly 6 feet tall. I need your expert advice.
You're right; the price of the Hyundai Venue diesel AT feels high for a compact SUV, but that's largely because the cost of keeping a diesel engine compatible with the latest emissions norms is high. It becomes especially apparent in the price of compact cars.
And yes, while the diesel automatic is the best overall powertrain of the Venue, and a relative novelty in the segment, you could save a bundle by choosing the turbo petrol instead.
Since you plan to use it mostly in the city, it's not worth the extra spend on the diesel engine, and the 1.0 T-GDi with the DCT is a good combo.
However, if you want a car that's fun to drive in this segment, consider the Skoda Kylaq instead. It's perhaps not as cutting-edge as the Venue when it comes to tech, but it does have a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating.
Also, a punchier engine in its 1.0 TSI and a smoother automatic in the form of its 6-speed torque converter auto.

I have an Alto. I want to buy a new car for roughly ₹15 lakhs. My daily running is 5 km maximum, so the car must be an automatic petrol. No AMT and no DCT. I want something that's misuse-friendly for senior citizens. Kindly suggest, thanks!
You can consider the Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXi variant. It comes with a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox and is known to be a reliable car. Maruti Suzuki is planning to update the Brezza very soon, so it would be better to wait for the updated model to arrive.
Another option that fits your priorities is the Skoda Kylaq Prestige AT. It is a solid car, though it is smaller in size compared to the Brezza.

I have a Kia Syros diesel manual and am planning to buy a second car with a budget of ₹12 lakh. Please suggest a car that offers good handling, is easy to drive, and is compact in size.
Check out the Citroen C3 X, which is one of the most dynamically sorted cars at its price, and quite underrated too. Typical of French cars, the suspension setup is superbly tuned for a mix of exceptional comfort and sharp handling, and it also features a communicative steering system for a car in this class. Combine that with a punchy and smooth 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, and you have a car that's a lot of fun to drive.
With the recent C3 X update, it now gets the features it was missing previously, but you can still get a fully-loaded model - with a smooth 6-speed AT gearbox, if you like - in your budget of Rs 12 lakh.
You could also consider the Skoda Kylaq, which is a bit more spacious, but in your budget, you will only get a mid-spec model.

I am looking for an automatic car within a budget of ₹10-12 Lakhs for a 10-year ownership period. My daily commute is 20–30 km, primarily in heavy city traffic. I value reliability, but also want a bit of performance. Given my city usage and long-term plans, should I opt for the smoothness and longevity of a Naturally Aspirated (NA) engine with a CVT/IVT (Amaze/i20), or would a Turbo-petrol with a Torque Converter (TC) (Kylaq or Brezza) be better? Also, can Nexon (AMT) fit in my requirements?
Unfortunately, the compact SUVs you've listed - Skoda Kylaq, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and Tata Nexon - will only fit in your budget in a low- to mid-spec variant, which will deprive you of some crucial features. We would instead recommend the Hyundai i20, which gives you not one but two petrol-automatic options, and is a great all-round premium hatchback which you can get in near-top-spec guise in your budget.
It's fine to have a bit of performance with reliability, and if so, you should check out the 1.0 turbo-petrol N-Line variants of the i20. But if you prefer the smoothness of a CVT, there is the lower-powered 1.2 NA petrol too.
Alternatively, check out the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger, which offer the best of both worlds - turbo-petrol and CVT - well within your budget.

Hi, I currently own a 2018 Baleno purchased in January 2019 and am now looking to upgrade. I am considering either a four-year-old Jeep Compass Petrol DCT or a demo Skoda Kylaq Prestige AT, both priced similarly. If I choose the Jeep, I plan to upgrade again before 2028 and get a bigger vehicle. My driving is mostly on highways, covering around 6,000-7,000 km annually. Please help me choose.
The Jeep Compass and the Skoda Kylaq are a few segments apart, but priced similarly in the used market, we understand your confusion. Both cars have very good highway manners, and in that sense, you would be happy in either.
If your highway trips also involve weekend holiday destinations in places which involve some level of off-road trails, then go with the Compass; if not, you'll be just fine with the Skoda Kylaq, which should also prove to be a bit more reliable in the long run.

I am looking for a sub-compact SUV with a focus on mileage, safety, and a smooth driving experience. My budget is ₹13 lakh, and I want an automatic car. Around 70% of my driving will be in the city and 30% on the highway. I am considering the Skoda Kylaq, 3XO, and Toyota Taisor. My first car was a Toyota, and I have had a good overall experience. Please suggest which car I should go with. I am also open to other recommendations.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor is essentially the Maruti Suzuki Fronx with a Toyota badge and is a reliable crossover and the most fuel-efficient of your short list. It’s a safe choice but not the most exciting one.
If you want a car that is enjoyable to drive both in the city and on the highway, we would suggest you look at the Skoda Kylaq, as it offers sharp handling, a comfortable ride, and strong performance. The Mahindra XUV 3XO has better features but isn’t quite as nice to drive as the Kylaq.

Hi, I am planning to choose between the Kylaq Signature Plus Automatic and the Sonet HTX DCT. Around 70% of my driving will be between Delhi and Gurgaon in heavy traffic, and the remaining 30% will be on highways. Which of these two cars would suit my usage better? I plan to keep the car for at least 10 years and would prefer something that is lighter on maintenance and ownership costs.
In your case, the Skoda Kylaq is a better choice for several reasons. Firstly, the Kylaq’s 1.0 TSI engine and 6AT automatic gearbox work better than the Sonet’s 1.0 TGDi and DCT combination. Being a torque converter, the Kylaq’s automatic gearbox is smoother in heavy traffic, and it's quite responsive too.
The Sonet’s DCT is not as smooth, and there’s a bit of lag in the response when you float it. Also, for highway driving, the Kylaq feels more planted and stable at high speeds and has better overall dynamics than the Kia Sonet.

Please suggest a new car from the shortlisted options: Skoda Kylaq, Skoda Kushaq, or Volkswagen Taigun with the 1.0-litre engine. You may also recommend other suitable alternatives.
The Skoda Kylaq, Kushaq, and Volkswagen Taigun are all very similar under the skin, and the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is common to all three, as are many other mechanical components, as well as interior bits.
The Skoda Kylaq is the only sub-4-meter car among them, and if you want something compact and very easy to manage in crowded city streets, then you should opt for it. However, if you do want a bit more space and a slightly more premium-looking interior, the Kushaq or Taigun would be better options. Do note, both are due for updates very soon - the Skoda Kushaq next month - so it may be worth waiting if you can.

I am a senior citizen and want a small, comfortable car. Please suggest the best options.
We are not sure of your budget, so at the lower end, we recommend the Maruti Suzuki Celerio. The car is easy to get into and out of, it's comfy inside, and its overall light controls, like the steering and clutch, make it very easy and friendly to drive. The ride quality is also good, as is the space; however, bear in mind that three abreast at the rear is tight.
At a higher budget, you could consider the Skoda Kylaq automatic as the gearbox is a torque convertor unit, which is the smoothest type around. This Skoda car is also compact enough for the city. Avoid the manual version, as the clutch and gear shifts are not particularly light.

I am planning to buy my first car. I have shortlisted the Skoda Kylaq automatic. Should I go with Kyalq as my first car? Can you recommend between the Signature and Signature+ variants? Are there any other suitable options in this price range? My drive would be 40% city and 60% highway.
The Skoda Kylaq is a good choice for a first car. It is easy to drive, is comfortable, and the 1.0-litre engine mated to the 6-speed torque converter transmission is smooth and effortless, whether in city traffic or on the highway.
The Signature+ variant is worth considering even if it is over Rs 1.5 lakh more expensive, as it gets a fully digital instrumentation, a larger 10.1-inch infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, passive keyless entry, engine push-button start, automatic climate control, and a lot more.
