Hi Team, I need your help in making a head vs. heart decision. I am a new driver and this would be my first car. My budget is around Rs. 15-16 lakh and I want a car with automatic transmission and should have BH number. I work in Delhi but my hometown is in Uttarakhand. My usage will be around 60% in the city and 40% on highway/hill runs. My overall running will be around 1,000 km per month. Since I am a bachelor, I will be mostly travelling alone and only sometimes with passengers. Jimny and Kylaq are front runners but I have a soft spot for the Gypsy, which used to be my dad's government car. Which car should I choose? I like Jimny Alpha AT but logically Skoda Kylaq Prestige+ makes more sense. I am open to other options as well.
The Skoda Kylaq Prestige+ automatic is the better choice for your usage, even though the Jimny has the stronger emotional appeal. The Jimny’s biggest strength is its off-road ability, which you’re unlikely to use often. In the city, its heavy steering and large number of turns lock to lock can make manoeuvring tiring, while the ride, though impressive for a ladder-frame SUV, still feels lumpier than the Kylaq’s. Its engine is also less suited to relaxed, quick highway overtakes. The Kylaq, on the other hand, fits your Delhi commute and Uttarakhand trips better. Its 1.0-litre turbo-petrol has enough punch for highway driving, the six-speed torque converter automatic is smooth in traffic, and its comfortable ride and agile handling make it enjoyable without being demanding for a new driver. It should also feel more settled on long highway runs. The Jimny will always have that Gypsy connection, and that’s a perfectly valid reason to want one. But buy the Kylaq with your head and heart: it is the more capable everyday companion for the driving you’ll actually do.
I am considering the Jimny Automatic and would like to understand how it performs on highways, particularly how stable and confidence-inspiring it feels while cruising at around 100kmph. I have heard some owners mention that it can feel a little wobbly at this speed. I am not expecting sporty performance, but highway stability and confidence are important to me. The Jimny’s narrower width is actually a positive for me because of tighter parking spaces. I currently drive an Ertiga ZXi+ Petrol Manual and cover around 6,000km a year. Jimny owners and drivers, please share your real-world experiences, especially on long drives and expressways.
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is a very different proposition from your Ertiga. It is a proper off-road SUV with a narrow body, tall stance and a short wheelbase, and that fundamentally shapes its highway behaviour. At 100 km/h it is stable enough, but it does not feel as planted or as confidence-inspiring as a wider, lower SUV like the Brezza. The Jimny is light and tall, so crosswinds and passing trucks can be felt more, and the steering is not as precise at higher speeds. What some people describe as a “wobble” is really the car’s natural tendency to feel a bit more lively on the road at speed, especially on uneven surfaces. That said, it is not unsafe or unstable – it is just a different kind of vehicle. The Jimny is happiest at a relaxed cruise, and it rewards you with its compact size, excellent visibility and genuine off-road ability. If your priority is highway stability and long-distance comfort, the Jimny is not the best choice. If you value its compact dimensions and off-road capability, and you are willing to drive at a more relaxed pace, it can be a very satisfying car to own.
I need your expert opinion for my Maruti Suzuki Jimny 4x4 AT with 25,000km on odometer that I want to convert to CNG. Is it a good idea for such a vehicle with AT and 4x4? While using 4x4, I will ensure that the car runs on petrol. Secondly, what will be the impact on its resale value after 5 year or 7 years of usage compared to stock or with aftermarket CNG kit installed? Lastly, who is your most trusted authorized CNG fitment and service dealer in Bangalore?
We would strongly advise against fitting an aftermarket CNG kit to your Jimny 4x4 AT. The Jimny’s 1.5-litre petrol engine is already modest in power, and adding CNG will further reduce performance, which will be particularly noticeable in a 4x4 automatic where power delivery is crucial. Even if you plan to switch to petrol when using 4x4, the overall ownership experience will be compromised. The Jimny is designed as a lifestyle off-roader, and modifying it with CNG goes against its intended use. From a resale perspective, an aftermarket CNG kit will almost certainly reduce the car’s value after 5-7 years. Buyers of the Jimny typically value its originality and off-road capability, and a CNG conversion is likely to be viewed as a negative modification. The resale impact will be greater than any fuel savings you might achieve over the ownership period. If your primary concern is running costs, it may be worth considering a more fuel-efficient vehicle rather than modifying the Jimny. If you are set on CNG, a factory-fitted CNG car is always the better option. As for trusted CNG fitment centres in Bangalore, we would not recommend any for this particular application, as we do not believe it is the right decision for this vehicle.
