Hello Autocar Team. First of all, wish you a very Happy New Year. Our family loves long road trips and we currently own a 2017 Ford Figo, which we love. Now, since we have elders, we are looking for a 7‑seater family car and are confused between the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel manual top‑end and the Tata Safari Accomplished X‑Plus diesel manual. Most of the driving will be on highways, as we already have a Ford Figo and a Tata Curvv EV that will now be used for city or solo drives.

Both the Tata and Mahindra cars are excellent choices, but of the two, we'd recommend waiting for the Mahindra XUV 7XO, whose launch is right around the corner. It will have a more modern interior and likely more features too, and going by its predecessor, the XUV 700.
It will also have the more refined diesel engine and slicker manual gearbox. We will say the Tata Safari has the edge on space, especially in the third row, and its ride quality is slightly more comfortable. Plus, there will likely be a long waiting period for the Mahindra XUV 7XO once it is launched.
So, if you are in a hurry, the Tata might be easier to get sooner. But in most other areas, the Mahindra comes out on top. Another consideration, especially for your elderly family members, is that ingress and egress to the cabin are slightly easier in the Mahindra than the Tata.

Hello. I am planning to buy a petrol automatic 5 or 7-seater as an upgrade from my Ford EcoSport 1.0 EcoBoost petrol manual. I am looking for an SUV or MUV within a maximum on-road budget of ₹22-25 lakh in Chennai. I want something that feels like a proper upgrade, has solid build quality, good driving experience, reliable service, and a comfortable second row for three adults, with occasional four passengers for short drives.
The Mahindra XUV700 is a good option to consider. It is available with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that makes 200hp and 380Nm of torque. It is available with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
The XUV700 is spacious and comfortable, and the second row can easily accommodate three passengers. The cabin is well-built, and the quality of materials used is good. This Mahindra car is also well-equipped and gets features like a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The XUV700 has a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP and is one of the safest cars in its class. The XUV700 is priced between Rs 14.64 lakh and Rs 24.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Do note, however, the XUV700 will be replaced by its facelifted version - the Mahindra XUV 7XO - in early 2026. So if you're not in a hurry, it's worth waiting for that to be launched.

Can you recommend an SUV under ₹25 lakhs (I’ll still keep my 2022 Suzuki Ciaz) with a large boot for a family of 4, generous headroom and legroom (my turban often touches the roof), excellent ride comfort, refined cabin experience, and strong engine performance?
Given your requirements, you should check the Tata Harrier and the upcoming Mahindra XUV 7XO.
The Tata Harrier is large and spacious, with ample room for front and rear passengers as well as a sizeable boot. The Harrier also feels tough and delivers on ride comfort. Within the Harrier line-up, the new petrol versions (prices of which will be announced soon) are the ones we'd recommend for you.
The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine is smooth and delivers ample performance. Gearshifts on the 6-speed automatic transmission are also very nice. The Harrier petrol, however, isn't as quiet as we'd hoped. You can hear the engine - it's not loud but remains audible.
Mahindra's upcoming XUV 7XO is essentially an updated version of the current XUV 700. Space is aplenty in the first two rows, and folding down the third row also frees up lots of luggage room. The XUV 7XO will use the same engines as the XUV 700, which means your options include a 200hp, 2-litre turbo-petrol and a 185hp, 2.2-litre turbo-diesel.
The petrol engine is particularly exciting, delivering brisk performance (though fuel economy is poor). On the other hand, the diesel engine feels strong and is also refined as diesel engines go. Opt for the automatic transmission versions for the best experience.

Hi. I own an XUV 700 AX7L petrol, which I bought in November 2024. That time, there was no info regarding the facelift. Now I am feeling a little sad seeing the facelift getting launched. Just want to check whether the facelift has any major engine upgrade, or it's just the cosmetic updates?
No, there are no mechanical updates expected for the Mahindra XUV700 facelift - called the XUV 7XO. The engines and gearboxes are likely to remain the same, as are the options of 5 or 7 seats and 2WD or AWD. There are no power upgrades expected either, at least not in the foreseeable future. The updates will be largely cosmetic, where the XUV 7XO is expected to get a heavily revised front fascia and tail section, borrowing some elements from the all-electric XEV 9S.
However, don't feel too bad about missing out, as we expect the Mahindra XUV 7XO to have a long waiting list, with deliveries only fully gaining momentum some way into 2026.

Hi, I am looking to replace my 2013 Dzire petrol with a bigger car, preferably an SUV. My average monthly running is low, around 1,000 km or less. We are a family of three, along with a dog, and we go on long trips once every month or two, usually under 1,000 km round-trip. Due to my transferable job, I am not keen on European brands with limited service networks. Please suggest suitable options among the Sierra, 7XO, and Harrier Petrol.
Go for the Mahindra XUV 7XO mainly because it has a third row (which the Tata Sierra and Harrier do not), and it will be a comfortable spot for your dog.
Apart from the additional seating, the XUV 7XO, which is an updated version of the XUV700, works very well for long trips. It makes a great highway car thanks to strong petrol and diesel engines and good high-speed stability. Mahindra has a vast service network, so your concern is also taken care of.

My monthly running is just 500-600 km with about 50% city and 50% highway use. I am a car enthusiast looking to buy a powerful automatic car with good performance and decent mileage within a ₹20 lakh budget. Please advise only automatic cars. Is it worth buying a diesel car, considering DPF issues and the 10-year diesel cap concerns?
For DPF regeneration, it's not the number of kilometres you drive in a month that matters, but the driving pattern. To avoid DPF issues, you need to be driving at steady speeds of 50-60kph for around half an hour for the DPF to ‘light off’ and burn the soot accumulated inside.
Since your usage is 50 per cent on the highway, it is sufficient to clear your DPF, so you should not have any issue with DPF clogging.
If you like power and performance, the best diesel for your budget is the Mahindra XUV700 2.2 diesel with a 6-speed AT. The XUV 700 lower MX variants will fit in your budget.
Also, you might want to wait for the Mahindra XUV 7X0, which will be launched in early January, which is essentially a refreshed version of the XUV700 and with the same 2.2 diesel.
Also, the 10-year limit is only in the Delhi area and is likely to be relaxed for the latest BS6.2 cars

I am a proud owner of a Renault Duster, which has now completed 9 years. The car is solid and running well, but I am thinking of upgrading. I really like my Duster. My monthly driving is around 600km. Should I wait for the new Duster or consider the XUV 7XO?
You are not alone in your interest in the new Renault Duster. The original Duster has a loyal fan base, and many owners like you are keen on the new model. While we are yet to drive it, the new Duster promises the same robust build and tough suspension that differentiated the original model. The interior will also retain the hardy character, though modern features will make it a nicer place to be.
What remains a question mark for now is the powertrains. The new Duster will not be offered with a diesel engine, and the only options will be a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol. How these engines work with the Duster is something we'll only know when we drive the SUV in the latter part of January 2026. Stay tuned for our review!
As for the Mahindra XUV 7XO, it's essentially an updated version of the current XUV700. The model will get a new look and feature upgrades, like a three-screen layout on top versions. The powertrains will be carried forward from the XUV 700, which is no bad thing because Mahindra's petrol and diesel engines are very impressive. Just how good the package is is something we'll know in early January over our test drive. Again, do stay tuned for the review!
Do note, the Duster and XUV 7XO sit in different segments. The XUV 7XO is significantly larger, will be roomier and also offers a third row of seats. The Duster, on the other hand, will be easier to live with in congested city conditions by virtue of its smaller size. PS - A three-row version of the Duster is also being readied for India for launch later in the year.

I currently own a 2017 Honda Jazz Petrol VX, which is now 9 years old and has covered 50,000km. I do not drive daily. Usage is mostly within the city (60%) with occasional highway trips (40%). We are a family of 4 adults and 2 kids. I am planning to upgrade to a 7-seater and have shortlisted the Mahindra XUV7XO and Tata Safari. I am confused about choosing between petrol and diesel. Please advise.
Yes, both the Tata Safari and the upcoming Mahindra XUV 7XO offer petrol options, and both are good engines that deliver well on refinement and performance, the Mahindra more so. However, fuel efficiency will not be very high.
In our usage, the petrol Mahindra XUV700 returned mid single-digit fuel efficiency figures in the city, and the new XUV7XO will be no different. We are yet to test the Tata Safari petrol for efficiency, but stay tuned to our website because we will be doing that shortly.
If you are okay with low mileage figures, go ahead with the petrol. We will also be reviewing the new 7XO next month, so stay tuned for that. Between the two, for primarily city use, the Mahindra is likely to be the better choice as it is narrower, feels lighter, and is easier to drive thanks to its very light steering.

Hello, I work abroad & want to buy a new car for my family of 5. Initially, it will be used by my daughter for city driving with limited weekly usage. I am looking for a car that is easy to drive in traffic, safe, fuel-efficient, and suitable for long trips when I visit during the holidays. It should be easy for women to drive in the city, yet strong and stable on highways and ghats. My budget is around ₹20 to 25 lakh. When I was last in Chennai, I almost bought the Thar Roxx AX7L. I plan to make the purchase in June 2026.
The Mahindra Thar Roxx is far more comfortable than the three-door version, but as a family car, the ride is still on the firmer side. Within your budget, if most of your driving is on the road, there are more comfortable options available.
Within Mahindra, you could wait for the XUV 7XO, which is expected to launch in January 2025 and is essentially the facelifted XUV700. Despite its size, it will be easy to drive, and the petrol and diesel engines are well-suited for both city and highway use. Given your limited driving, the petrol makes more sense. It will also be more spacious, with a larger boot, and being a 7 seater, it gives you added versatility whenever you need the extra seats. We expect the top AX7 petrol variant to fit within your budget.
If you want something smaller and more efficient, you could also consider the new Tata Sierra. Even the top turbo-petrol automatic fits within your budget, and based on our experience, this Tata car delivers good driving pleasure and comfort while offering a class-leading feature list. The smaller 1.5-litre engine, while down on power compared to Mahindra’s 2.0-litre, is still strong enough and should prove to be more economical as well.

I am planning to buy a new car. Currently owning a 2022 Creta. I am confused between the Tata Sierra Turbo petrol accomplished + and the Mahindra XUV 700 AX7 model, as the prices are quite similar for both these models. Not sure which one will make better sense, and also the one that will be easier to manage for a long period of ownership
The Tata Sierra and Mahindra XUV700 are slightly different vehicles, and it depends on your requirements and priorities. Also, the Mahindra XUV700 is due to be discontinued and replaced in Jan 2026 with the XUV7X0, which is essentially an upgraded XUV700.
If you want power and performance, the Mahindra XUV 7XO, with its strong petrol and diesel engine options, is the one for you. However, the petrol engine is a bit of a guzzler and will burn a hole in your pocket. Another reason to buy the XUV7X0 is the space and the on-board tech, which is very impressive.
The Tata Sierra is a more compact car, which makes it much easier to park and manoeuvre, and overall it's easier to drive thanks to fantastic all-round visibility. The Sierra’s 1.5 turbo-petrol, though nowhere near as powerful as the XUV7X0’s 2-litre petrol, is smooth and strong enough to give you enough punch for everyday driving. Also, a plus is the 6-speed auto, which is jerk-free and refined.
The Sierra’s long-term performance is not yet known, and Tata’s poor reputation for quality and service precedes it. However, since it's made in a new plant with a far better quality culture, we are hopeful that with the Sierra, Tata will put this reputation behind it. We would lean towards the Sierra as it's a similar kind of car to the Hyundai Creta, which you are currently using.
