Questions you may find useful
Hi Autocar Team, I'm looking for some guidance on whether I've made the right decision or whether I should reconsider before delivery. My current car is Toyota Etios Liva V Petrol, which has been extremely reliable but now it delivers only around 10-12 kpl for my usage. This results in high running costs. My monthly driving is approximately 1,200-1,500 km that consists of daily commute and occasional highway trips. My initial plan was to keep costs under control and I had booked the Tata Punch EV Empowered+ 40 kWh, largely to restrict my budget to around Rs. 15 lakh on-road. However, while researching alternatives up to approximately Rs. 20 lakh ex-showroom in Kerala, I ended up booking the Kia Syros EV X-Line. The Syros EV appeals to me because of significantly better rear-seat space and cabin width as compared to my Etios Liva, more premium interior and features, better long-term family comfort, larger battery and range as well as better overall sense of upgrade from my current car. However, I'm still feeling anxious about whether I'm overspending. The jump in EMI from the Punch EV to the Syros EV is substantial and will have a noticeable impact on my monthly finances. While I can manage it, I want to be sure that the additional expenditure is genuinely justified and not merely an emotional decision. Based on my monthly running of 1,200-1,500 km, could you please advise if the Syros EV worth the additional cost over the Punch EV 40 kWh? From a value-for-money perspective, would you proceed with the Syros EV or step back to the Punch EV? Are there any other EVs under Rs. 20 lakh ex-showroom that I should seriously consider instead? I am not interested in the MG Windsor EV due to its styling, so alternatives apart from the Windsor would be appreciated. If you were in my position and were planning to keep the vehicle for 8-10 years, which option would you choose and why? Looking forward to your expert opinion.
You have made a sensible shortlist and your thinking is on the right track. The key question here is whether the Syros EV's higher cost is justified by your usage and priorities. At 1,200-1,500 km a month, an EV makes strong financial sense, but the Punch EV 40 kWh already delivers a very low running cost and a usable real-world range. The Syros EV's larger battery and longer range are nice to have, but the real justification for the extra spend is the significantly larger cabin, wider rear seat and more premium interior, which will make a meaningful difference to family comfort over an 8-10 year ownership period. If your primary concern is value for money and keeping EMIs under control, the Punch EV 40 kWh is the more rational choice. It will do the job well and keep your running costs low. However, if you are looking for a genuine upgrade from the Etios Liva and want a car that will feel comfortable and premium for the long term, the Syros EV is worth the extra spend. It is not just an emotional decision - the additional space and comfort will matter over time.Given your usage and ownership horizon, we would lean towards the Syros EV X-Line. It strikes a better balance between running cost savings and long-term comfort, and it feels like a proper step up from your current car. If you are not comfortable with the EMI jump, the Punch EV remains a very good alternative, but the Syros EV is the more complete upgrade.
Hi team! 🙋 Hope you are having a good day. Wanted your help in reaching an informed decision. I'm getting a used 45K Run 2024 Curvv EV Empowered+ A 55 for 16.5L . Do you think it is an okay price? I haven't negotiated yet. What will I be missing in comparison to the new SeriesX? Is the backseat of the old model comfortable for long journeys? I heard there were some complaints before n they improved it in the new one. Was there anything else bad apart from the headroom before, and how bad was it anyway, if tall passenger won't be sitting at the back? Also r there any known issues? What should I double check before buying one used? Or should I wait n buy a new Syros EV instead? Really appreciate your work in helping us out. Thanks in advance.
I’m from Visakhapatnam and am planning to buy a new SUV. I have been using a Honda Amaze diesel since 2013. Before that, I owned a Maruti 800 for 10 years. I am 63 years old and retired, and my annual running will be around 9,000-10,000 km. My driving will mostly involve a mix of city and highway use, and I intend to keep the car for 10-12 years. Mileage is one of my biggest priorities, followed by looks, driving enjoyment and long-term ownership costs. My budget is around Rs 16-17 lakh, and I want an automatic transmission. I also have a home charging facility. Should I consider the Kia Syros EV? My main concern is its boxy styling, which I don't particularly like. I also don't want a panoramic sunroof. Could you suggest which variant would suit my requirements from the following options: Kia Syros EV, Hyundai Bayon, Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Grand Vitara, Fronx facelift, Volkswagen Taigun, Honda Elevate and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder?
If you can get past the styling of the Kia Syros EV, it is a compelling option for your requirements. It is smooth and powerful; the regenerative braking is beautifully calibrated, and the real-world range is good. Despite being under four metres long, it is surprisingly spacious and has a large boot, making it practical for family use. With home charging available and your intention to keep the car for 10 to 12 years, it is worth serious consideration. Just make sure you are comfortable with the design before committing. If you prefer an ICE vehicle and fuel efficiency is your biggest priority, the Maruti Suzuki Victoris strong hybrid is worth looking at. With current offers, it could come close to your budget, and its biggest advantage is fuel economy, with over 20kpl possible even in city driving.
Hi, I am looking to buy an EV for around Rs 20 lakh and am planning to go with the new Kia Syros EV X Line. I love its ride quality, space, features and interiors. However, at Rs 23 lakh, it is a bit pricey. I've now been reading about the imminent launch of the Hyundai H1 EV sometime in early 2027. Is that car worth the hype and the wait, or would buying the Syros EV right away be a better choice?
If you have already driven the Kia Syros EV and like its space, ride quality and interiors, there is little reason to wait for Hyundai’s upcoming EV purely on the strength of the hype. The Hyundai is expected to be a smaller, more affordable electric SUV, positioned closer to the Tata Punch EV or Nexon EV rather than as a direct rival to the Syros EV.That said, Hyundai has confirmed a compact EV for India, expected to debut in early 2027, with standard range and long-range versions. Battery capacities and prices are not confirmed, so it is too early to assume it will be significantly cheaper or have a shorter range.Since you are stretching your budget for the Syros EV X Line, waiting a few months to see the Hyundai’s pricing and real-world range is sensible. But if the Syros already meets your needs and you are comfortable with the price, there is no compelling reason to delay your purchase for an unlaunched car.
Hi Autocar team, I am planning to buy a new car for daily use, as we already have a Maruti Suzuki Ciaz at home. I drive at least 15,000km a year, and probably closer to 20,000km, so I initially considered diesel options such as the Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 diesel manual. The Kia Syros EV is also on my shortlist. The on-road price of the 3XO is around Rs 11 lakh, while the Syros EV costs about Rs 15 lakh, a difference of Rs 4 lakh. I estimate annual fuel costs of around Rs 1.09 lakh for the diesel and electricity costs of Rs 30,000 for the EV, with a payback period of roughly 4.5-5 years after accounting for lower servicing costs. I can charge at home daily, rarely travel more than 300km in one trip, and can use the Ciaz for longer journeys. I am also considering installing a home solar system for around Rs 2.25 lakh. Should I buy the Syros EV, stick with the 3XO diesel or wait for the upcoming Hyundai compact EV? What should I consider regarding battery warranty, resale value, real-world range and service experience?
Go for the Kia Syros EV. With your running of 20,000 km a year, home charging and a solar plant planned, the maths works in your favour. Your payback calculation of 4.5-5 years is realistic, and with solar, your running costs drop even further. The Syros EV is a well-rounded EV with a comfortable ride, good space and a smooth powertrain. Your usage pattern is ideal for an EV: daily charging at home, predictable running and the Ciaz available for longer trips. The Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel is a strong product and makes sense for high-mileage highway users, but your usage is city-heavy, and the EV will be far cheaper to run. The Hyundai compact EV is worth waiting for only if you are not in a hurry, but the Syros EV is already a very competent product. The only thing to keep in mind is resale value, which is still evolving for electric cars in India. But with your running and ownership period, the savings will more than offset that. Go for the Syros EV and enjoy the savings.
