Can you help me buy a new car? My budget is Rs. 24-25 lakh, and if I have to choose between Kia Seltos, Tata Sierra, and MG Hector, which one should I opt for? I prefer the top-end automatic model. Should I go for a petrol engine or a diesel?

If you want peace of mind, ownership, and a well-rounded package, the Kia Seltos is the easiest recommendation. Regardless of which engine you choose, it delivers a satisfying experience. The 1.5 turbo petrol is great if you enjoy strong performance, especially on highways. The 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol with the CVT automatic is smooth and relaxed, making it ideal for city driving. And if you have high running, particularly on highways, the diesel option is refined and efficient. On top of all this, the Seltos feels premium inside, offers good space and comfort for four adults and is very competitively priced.
If you are considering the Tata Sierra, the turbo-petrol would be the better engine choice. It is refined, punchy and enjoyable to drive. The diesel also performs well but is not as refined as the Kia diesel unit, while the naturally aspirated petrol can feel underpowered, particularly in fast moving traffic or on highways.
In terms of space, the Sierra actually has an advantage over the Seltos. Its wider body gives it a more comfortable five-seat layout, and the seats and suspension make it a good long distance cruiser.
The MG Hector still offers excellent value, especially after the recent update that added more features and competitive pricing. It offers a phenomenal rear seat space and comfort, which makes it a good choice if the car will often be chauffeur-driven. However, it is not as engaging to drive as the Seltos or the Sierra.

I am confused between the Sierra diesel and the Seltos NA petrol MT. I want to buy a safe car. Seltos looks good and is good to drive. Will Seltos score 5 stars in safety as they use the K3 platform?

The new Kia Seltos hasn't been crash-tested yet, but it is built on a newer, reinforced K3 platform and gets a plethora of safety features, so it is likely to score higher than the outgoing version.
What adds to the confidence is that the smaller, more affordable Kia Syros (built on a reinforced K1 platform) has scored a 5-star safety rating in Bharat NCAP tests, hence it is possible that this new-gen Seltos achieves a similar feat. Although we'll have to wait for the final outcome when it is actually crash tested. Interestingly, the Sierra hasn't been crash tested either.
The Tata Sierra is more spacious than the Seltos (particularly at the rear), and it feels like a tough SUV. However, a similarly-equipped Tata Sierra Diesel MT is much more expensive than a Kia Seltos NA Petrol MT. Besides being more affordable, the Seltos is smooth, refined and with light controls, it is a touch easier to drive. Hence, between the two, we'd pick the Seltos.

I am planning to upgrade from a Toyota Yaris CVT to a Kia Seltos. My monthly usage is around 1000km, mostly in Bangalore city with a few highway trips. I need guidance on transmission selection. My dilemma: I'm torn between the IVT and DCT petrol variants. While I prefer the DCT for its performance, I'm concerned about reported overheating issues in heavy city traffic conditions. Given my usage pattern, which transmission would you recommend?

Considering that a big chunk of your driving is in Bangalore city, we would recommend sticking with the Kia Seltos 1.5 NA Petrol IVT. The 115hp engine is strong enough for your occasional highway journeys, helped by the IVT gearbox, which is designed to get the most out of the engine. Moreover, the smoother IVT gearbox is much better suited to low-speed driving than the DCT.
Potential heating issues aside, the DCT can feel clunky as it engages and disengages in stop-and-go traffic, and this also serves to exacerbate the 1.5 T-GDi's turbo lag at low speeds. The chain-driven CVT (IVT) is both durable and smoother than most belt-driven CVTs you find in a lot of other vehicles, and overall, the Seltos IVT is the one to go for in primarily urban driving conditions.

We recently booked the Seltos HTE (O) NA MT. The price difference between the manual and IVT is close to a lakh in Bengaluru due to high road tax. Do you think it’s worth considering an upgrade to the IVT? We are price-conscious and already over our initial budget of ₹12 lakh. We did not like the back seat space or refinement levels on sub-compact SUVs like the 3XO. The four-cylinder Seltos feels so refined compared to three-cylinder turbos. But at the same time, the 3rd and 4th gears on the Seltos also feel slightly underpowered in our test drives, which might be a problem during overtakes. However, since 80-90% of our usage will be within Bengaluru city, we thought it might not bother us. Are we making the correct decision here? Is there a better way to drive the Seltos during such overtakes?

The Kia Seltos HTE (O) NA MT is a good choice for your requirements. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine is smooth and refined, and while it isn’t the most powerful, it is adequate for city use. That said, since you mentioned that around 80% to 90% of your driving will be in Bengaluru, the IVT would be a worthwhile upgrade.
While the clutch on the manual is light enough, the convenience of the IVT in city traffic is undeniable. Another advantage is that the IVT masks the performance deficit of the 1.5 NA well, making it feel more responsive in urban driving. The typical CVT ‘rubber band’ effect is present when you push it for an overtake, but it is less pronounced than in many other CVTs.
If your budget permits, the Seltos IVT is the better choice. As for the manual, there isn’t much you can do about the underpowered feeling in third and fourth gears apart from keeping the engine within the powerband as much as possible.

I want to buy a new car. My budget is ₹12-17 lakh. Usage will be 60% city and 40% highway, with a monthly running of 1,500-2,500 km. I live in Chandigarh, Panchkula. I prefer a 4-cylinder and want good cabin insulation, safety, refinement, and reliability. Only petrol. I prefer an SUV, but am comfortable with a sedan as well. Please recommend a suitable car.

The Kia Seltos in its HTK trim would be a good option for you. It gets a smooth 4-cylinder petrol engine with excellent refinement and the CVT gearbox makes it effortless for city use and convenient enough on the highway.
The cabin insulation is very good, it gets high levels of active and passive safety measures and being a Kia car, there is good reliability too. Add to that the well-equipped cabin and a roomy rear seat, and the Seltos comes off as a strong choice. The bold design might be a concern, but you will get used to it, and it does stand out.

I'm considering upgrading from my Honda Amaze Diesel to a new Kia Seltos IVT HTX (A). My primary concern is whether the Seltos, with its IVT transmission, can handle a full load as well as my current Amaze, which has a turbo diesel engine. My monthly driving is around 500 km, and I take one or two long trips of around 1200 km annually. Apart from performance with full load, mileage is also a concern. Is this a good upgrade, or are there better alternatives available?

The Kia Seltos IVT is a good upgrade over your Honda Amaze. The Seltos is more spacious, comfortable, and feature-rich than the Amaze, and the IVT gearbox is very smooth and efficient.
The Seltos' 1.5-litre petrol engine is also quite refined, and while it isn't as punchy as the Amaze's diesel engine, it is more than adequate for city and highway use even with a full load. The IVT gearbox is also very smooth and efficient, and you won't complain much when it comes to performance.
Where the Seltos will not be as good as your old Amaze is the efficiency. The petrol-IVT combination isn't the best in the Seltos range, but you can still expect around 12kpl in the city and 15kpl on the highway. If you have the budget and don't mind a diesel, you can get the Seltos in its diesel guise, which will offer at least a couple of kpl more.

After consulting Autocar, I test drove the Seltos IVT NA engine and found it to be excellent, with smooth gear shifting and a truly excellent car. But I'd like to know: are paddle shifters useful if you ever feel a lack of power when driving with a full load? Are paddle shifters useful when climbing hills, and are they also useful when overtaking? Also, are automatic cars significantly more expensive to maintain?

Firstly, we’re glad you liked the Kia Seltos IVT and that our recommendation helped.
Paddle shifters are generally useful in automatics when you want manual control, for example, to downshift before an overtake, hold a lower gear while climbing, or use engine braking on a downhill section.
However, in the Seltos IVT (which is a CVT), you won’t feel the need to use them very often. That’s because a CVT doesn’t have fixed gears in the traditional sense. It uses a belt-and-pulley system that continuously varies the ratio, so it is essentially “stepless.” The gearbox automatically keeps the engine in its optimal power band, especially during overtaking or hill climbs. The “gears” you access via paddle shifters are actually pre-set ratios programmed into the software; they are artificial steps created to give a more conventional feel, not real physical gears.
So if you feel a lack of power with a full load, pulling a paddle may drop the revs into a higher power zone, but the CVT would typically do that on its own if you press the accelerator harder. In everyday driving, the system is smart enough to respond without manual input.
As for maintenance, CVTs are not dramatically more expensive than manuals. They require periodic fluid changes, but modern CVTs are generally reliable if maintained properly. The belt and pulley system is designed for long service life under normal use. Maintenance cost should not be a deciding factor; driving comfort and suitability to your usage matter more.

I am confused between the Seltos HTK (O) IVT petrol and the Urban Cruiser Hyryder Hybrid. My driving is mostly on city roads, and I want to keep the SUV for at least the next 10 years. Please advise.

It purely depends on how much you drive per month and how important fuel efficiency is to you. As an example, the Kia Seltos IVT is likely to deliver around 10.3kpl in the city, whereas the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder hybrid is capable of delivering double that number.
With the Kia Seltos HTK(O) IVT, you get much more features, a more spacious and modern cabin, a bigger boot, and a more comfortable drive experience.
Even the base S hybrid variant of the Hyryder commands a substantial premium over the Seltos variant mentioned above, and does not offer several feel-good features available in the Kia. But if your running is high, the hybrid could make sense due to significantly lower fuel costs.
Overall, both cars will serve you well for a long tenure. You need to decide whether you want features and a thoroughly modern midsize SUV, or an extremely fuel-efficient one by sacrificing some features.

Hi, I have a VW Virtus bought in early 2023, and now I am looking for a replacement. My preference is for an SUV. I'll primarily use it for city driving, and my monthly usage would be around 200 km. The car must have a good safety rating, comfort and mileage.

Since you are coming from a Volkswagen Virtus, you will naturally appreciate the Volkswagen Taigun or Skoda Kushaq, as both SUVs carry the same DNA of solid build quality and excellent driving dynamics. Between the two, the Kushaq, which has just been updated with fresher looks, more features and a stronger aircon, would be the better option.
You can opt for the 1.0 TSI variant with a six-speed automatic transmission, which is well-suited for city driving. It’s not the most fuel-efficient SUV in the segment, but considering your monthly running of around 200km, that shouldn’t matter too much.
However, do note that the back seat of the Kushaq (and Taigun) isn’t the most spacious. If you are looking for better rear seat comfort and slightly better efficiency, the Kia Seltos 1.5 petrol with the CVT automatic is another good option to consider.

I am planning to buy the new Kia Seltos. Initially, I had booked the HTX (A) IVT variant even before taking a test drive. However, after driving the IVT, I did not feel completely satisfied with the driving experience. Based on our usage pattern, the car will mostly be used on highways (around 60%) and the rest in the city (40%). Our overall running will be quite low, and the car will not be used for daily commuting. It will primarily be used for leisure drives and occasional road trips. Because of this, the DCT variant feels like a much more exciting option to me at the moment. My only concern is future practicality. If at some point I need to start using the Seltos DCT as a daily driver in Mumbai traffic, it would be the only car for my family of three (my parents and me). So my question is: If I follow all the recommended precautions for driving a DCT in bumper-to-bumper traffic, would the Seltos DCT still be a sensible and reliable choice for long-term ownership in Mumbai? I would really appreciate insights from owners and people with experience driving DCTs in heavy traffic.

The Kia Seltos Turbo-DCT is the right pick for you. The engine's added 45hp of power counts for a lot, especially on highway drives. It's easily more fun to drive than the Seltos IVT.
The Seltos IVT does make for a better city car thanks to its seamless gearbox, but it also feels a bit one-sided in that way. The Turbo-DCT is more rounded in that sense, offering automatic convenience in the city and strong performance out on the highway. Sure, the DCT won't be quite as smooth in bumper-to-bumper traffic as an IVT, but the experience is not a dealbreaker by any means.
