I am planning to buy a diesel AWD SUV for long highway journeys ranging from 500 to 1,000 kilometres. The Mahindra XUV 7XO and Jeep Meridian are on my shortlist because of their reliability, capabilities and attractive pricing. However, as a Ford EcoSport owner, I am concerned that Jeep could face a similar future in India to Ford. Could the Jeep Meridian be a riskier long-term ownership proposition due to uncertainty surrounding the brand’s long-term commitment to the Indian market? Alternatively, could Stellantis’ future plans and investments provide greater stability and growth opportunities for Jeep in India? Considering an ownership period of 8-10 years, which vehicle offers greater confidence in terms of reliability, spare-parts availability, and after-sales support?
For an 8-10 year ownership period and regular 500-1,000km highway journeys, the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel AWD automatic is the more reassuring choice if service access and spare-parts availability are your biggest concerns. Its 2.2-litre diesel delivers strong low- and mid-range torque, and it has very good ride comfort, refinement and high-speed stability. The revised suspension also deals with rough roads better than before. The Jeep Meridian deserves consideration too. Stellantis’ plan to introduce 12 new or significantly updated Jeep and Citroën models in India by 2030, backed by further investment and greater localisation, is an encouraging sign of its commitment to the market. However, the Meridian is far less common on Indian roads than Mahindra SUVs, so spare parts and independent service expertise are likely to be easier to find for the XUV 7XO in the long run, even if either model is discontinued.
Hi Autocar team, I really enjoy the strong torque of diesel engines and currently drive a 4.5-year-old Tata Altroz diesel that has covered 95,000km. I am considering the Jeep Meridian for its highway ability, but I have read that its nine-speed ZF automatic gearbox can sometimes shift awkwardly or jerk. I am also considering the Citroën C5 Aircross, if I can find one, because of its ride comfort and eight-speed Aisin automatic gearbox. I drive around 20,000-25,000 km annually and prefer to travel by car rather than fly whenever possible. Since automatic gearboxes are expensive to repair, which is likely to be more reliable in the long run, the ZF unit in the Meridian or the Aisin unit in the C5 Aircross?
For your 20,000-25,000 km annual running and frequent long-distance trips, the Citroen C5 Aircross is the more appealing choice for ride comfort and gearbox refinement, while the Jeep Meridian has a stronger long-term test record with Autocar India. The C5’s Aisin 8-speed automatic is smooth and well suited to relaxed touring, but there isn't enough comparable long-term evidence to confidently declare it more reliable than the Meridian’s ZF 9-speed. The country of origin alone doesn't determine durability. The Meridian’s gearbox can hesitate or hunt between gears at low speeds, as our long-term test noted, but the SUV completed more than 21,000km, including a demanding journey to Ladakh, without a mechanical fault. That is reassuring, though it cannot establish how either transmission will fare over 1-2 lakh kilometres.Since you're buying new, test the Meridian in slow traffic and during repeated overtaking manoeuvres, and drive the C5 over the same route.
Hello Autocar India team, I want to thank you for your First Impression articles, detailed reviews, podcasts and other content. Please continue with your impartial reviews. I currently own a 2015 Vento Highline Petrol and still fall in love with the car whenever I take it on long drives. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be much movement in the sedan segment. We can stretch our budget to Rs 40 lakh on-road. Our primary use will be planned or unplanned road trips, with limited city driving. EVs concern me because of battery life and charging infrastructure. Petrol cars are a concern because of E20 and the possibility of higher ethanol blending in the future. Hybrids haven't convinced me either. I also don't want to consider premium hatchbacks like the Creta and Seltos. We have narrowed our choices to the Jeep Meridian Overland or Compass 4x4, although Stellantis' long-term commitment remains a concern; the Kia Sorento Diesel AWD; and the Mahindra XUV 7XO Diesel 4x4. Please share your unbiased recommendation. Thanks and regards, Yashodhan Patel
Thank you for your kind words on our content.Of the vehicles on your shortlist, the Kia Sorento Diesel AWD is the best. It's got a strong diesel engine and a smooth gearbox, which make long journeys absolutely effortless. Kia has also packed the Sorento with features that uplift comfort levels inside. The third row isn't the best, though the Jeep Meridian and Mahindra XUV 7XO are also not great in this regard. Kia's proven reliability also makes the Sorento an easy model to recommend for your usage.
Considering buying a premium 7-seater. I was quite impressed with the Jeep Meridian Overland; however, I don’t see many people recommending it. Most seem to suggest the Innova Hycross, XUV 7XO, or even the Fortuner instead. I primarily use the car in the city and hit the highways twice a month, with an overall monthly running of around 1,500 km. I have no plans for off-road use, and the third row would primarily be used for my pet dog and occasional guests.
Go for the Jeep Meridian Overland. Your usage pattern actually suits the Meridian very well. It is a genuinely premium product with a strong diesel engine, a well-appointed cabin, and a more upmarket feel than many of its rivals. The reason it is not widely recommended is largely down to Jeep's limited service network and higher ownership costs compared to Toyota and Mahindra, rather than any fundamental issue with the car itself.Given your usage of 1,500 km a month with a mix of city driving and twice-monthly highway runs, the Meridian's diesel engine will be efficient and well-suited to long-distance cruising. The third row being used primarily for your pet and occasional guests means you are not relying on it as a full-time family seat, which is important because the Meridian's third row is best suited to occasional use rather than regular adult occupancy. The Toyota Innova Hycross is the more practical and reliable choice with a stronger ownership proposition, but it does not feel as premium or as engaging to drive as the Meridian. The Mahindra XUV 7XO is a great value alternative with more space and features, but it does not have the same premium feel. The Fortuner is overkill for your needs and is more focused on ruggedness and off-road capability, which you do not require.
Dear Autocar, firstly, thank you for your detailed and honest car reviews. They genuinely help enthusiasts and buyers make informed decisions. I am considering the Jeep Meridian base model, as it fits my budget and requirements for a spacious, comfortable 5-seater with a large boot. My primary use will be highway touring with my parents, and since I enjoy driving myself, good driving dynamics are also important. Currently, I drive a Renault Duster for daily use, while my brother owns a Volkswagen Tiguan. We are now looking for a comfortable long-distance tourer for trips of 1,500 km or more with ample luggage space. My main concern is the Jeep Meridian’s long-term presence in India, especially considering future CAFE norms. Do you think the Meridian is a sensible choice, and is it likely to remain on sale in the Indian market for the next 3-5 years? Thanks again!
For long highway trips with your parents, lots of luggage, and a driver who enjoys doing the distance, the Jeep Meridian base variant used as a 5-seater fits well. With the last row folded, the boot is huge, and the ride is calm at speed, so your parents stay comfortable. This Jeep car feels steady and quiet on expressways, and the diesel’s easy pull makes cruising and quick passes simple. Coming from a Duster, you’ll notice a nicer cabin and better noise insulation. The Meridian isn’t as sharp to drive as the VW Tiguan, but the Jeep rides softer, which suits long tours.Know the trade-offs. The third row is only for short hops and eats boot space when up, so keep it folded. The base trim will miss a few nice-to-haves; if the budget stretches, the next trim up adds useful highway bits. On long-term presence, there’s no signal of Jeep pulling the plug on the Meridian. It’s built here alongside the Compass, meets current emission rules, and CAFE is managed at brand level. A 3-5 year sale window looks safe. Even if plans change, parts and support normally continue for many years.
