The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R can now be added to the long list of new and refreshed Maruti Suzuki models that are coming this year. Currently one of Maruti’s most popular models, the Wagon R is set to get an update soon. The refreshed Wagon R will most likely see a price announcement after the new Baleno's launch, which is slated to happen some time next week. This, likely, will be a slight cosmetic update for the Wagon R, although there could be a major mechanical change under the hood as well.

2022 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: what will be new?

The Wagon R has been in the market since 2019, and it was just about time for Maruti to give it a fresh lease of life. This, however, seems to be no major facelift but only a model year update.

The 2022 Wagon R, spied during a TVC shoot, was completely uncamouflaged and it did not reveal any major cosmetic changes on the hatchback. The only noticeable differences are the new blacked-out roof and wheels. Maruti Suzuki could also be adding new colour options to the Wagon R with this update.

While the interior was not quite seen in these pictures, we do not expect any major changes to the cabin. That said, the Wagon R could be updated with new upholstery for the seats and an improved infotainment system.

2022 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: engine and gearbox options

Currently, the Wagon R is available with two petrol engine options – a 68hp, 1.0-litre K10B engine and an 83hp, 1.2-litre K12M engine. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT gearbox.

Maruti is expected to continue with the smaller 1.0-litre engine for a competitive price positioning, although the larger 1.2-litre K12M engine could be replaced with the 90hp, 1.2-litre DualJet petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech that’s already offered on the Swift and Dzire and will also feature on the upcoming new Baleno. Additionally, the 1.2-litre version could also get a CNG option a little later.

2022 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: rivals in India

The Maruti Wagon R rivals the likes of the Hyundai Santro and the Tata Tiago in the hatchback segment. Given the updates, expect a slight bump up in the prices as well. If the Wagon R is at all offered with the 1.2-litre DualJet engine, the premium could be considerably more.
