After years of waiting, the Tata Harrier and Safari petrol are set to launch in India on December 9, 2025. In development for over 5 years, the 1.5-litre four-cylinder direct-injection turbo-petrol unit is part of Tata’s ‘Hyperion’ engine series and was first showcased at Auto Expo 2023

  1. New Tata 1.5 T-GDI engine to debut in Sierra on November 25
  2. Harrier, Safari petrol likely to get 170hp and 280Nm state of tune

Tata Harrier and Safari petrol engine details

Manual and automatic gearbox options expected

Both the Harrier and Safari petrol variants are likely to have the engine in the same state of tune as the unit displayed at Auto Expo 2023; 170hp at 5,000rpm and 280Nm of torque between 2,000 and 3,500rpm. While manual and automatic gearboxes are expected, the kind of automatic transmission – likely candidates are a torque converter or a dual-clutch – is yet unknown. When this engine makes its debut on the Sierra on November 25, it may give us an indication of what gearbox to expect on Tata’s flagship SUVs.

It should also be noted that the naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine (also making its debut on entry-level Sierra variants) is not expected on the Harrier or Safari. On the other hand, the Jeep is expected to borrow Tata’s 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine for the Compass and Meridian.

Tata Harrier and Safari petrol price estimate and rivals

Harrier petrol price expected to be slightly lower than the equivalent diesel variant

Prices for the Harrier and Safari petrol are expected to be slightly lower than their equivalent diesel variants. The Harrier is currently priced between Rs 14 lakh and Rs 25.25 lakh, while the Safari costs Rs 14.66 lakh-25.96 lakh. Tata’s 5-seat flagship takes on the likes of the Jeep Compass and MG Hector, while the three-row version rivals the Mahindra XUV700, Hyundai Alcazar and Jeep Meridian. Other than the aforementioned Jeep SUVs, all other rivals have petrol and diesel engine options, and with the gasoline-powered versions of the Harrier and Safari, Tata Motors will finally be able to fill this gap in its portfolio.

All prices, ex-showroom, India.
