Maruti Suzuki’s next big launch for India is the all-new Swift, which will go on sale in the coming months. The new Swift – internally codenamed Maruti YED – is already being road-tested in India, and its production is expected to start next month.

    New Maruti Swift production details

Just like the outgoing car, the new Swift will be manufactured at the company's Hansalpur plant in Gujarat. The Swift has been a popular model for Maruti and it averages at around 18,000 units a month. The new Swift is expected to take the baton from here on and, according to sources, a monthly production target of around 20,000 units is being planned. While an India launch timeline isn’t clear yet, we expect Maruti to launch the new Swift by April 2024.

New Maruti Swift design and interior

As seen on almost every generation of the Swift, Maruti and its parent Suzuki have stuck to the tried-and-tested formula of the original sporty hatch that made its debut. The latest-gen Swift, which made its debut late last year in Japan, sticks to the same design philosophy. It gets familiar design cues right from the bodyshell to the headlamps and the tail-lamps, but the overall design is much sharper.

The new Swift looks almost the same size as the outgoing model but it is actually 15mm longer, 40mm narrower and 30mm taller. The wheelbase remains unchanged at 2,450mm. These are the Japanese model's specs – the one that’s coming to India might have some very minor styling and size differences.

On the inside, the dashboard gets a similar look to the one on the Baleno and Fronx, but a closer look reveals some styling differences, confirming that the new Swift gets a unique dashboard design. Additionally, the floating touchscreen unit, steering wheel, instrument cluster, HVAC controls and several switch gears are shared with other Maruti Suzuki models sold in our market.

    New Maruti Swift powertrain options

Suzuki’s new Z12 engine, an all-new 1.2-litre petrol unit, will debut on the India-bound Swift. This engine was also seen on the car showcased in Japan. For India, expect the same engine to come with mild-hybrid tech and some differences in its power and torque output, thanks to different emissions laws.

New Maruti Dzire launch to follow Swift

Contrary to the previous-gen Swift-Dzire twins, Maruti will introduce the new Swift in India first,  followed by the Dzire a few months later. Sources tell us that by doing so, Maruti is looking to “re-establish” the Swift brand with its new design and powertrain in our market.
