The fourth-gen Hyundai i20 has been spied testing in Europe, giving us a hint of the all-new hatchback’s exterior design. The new i20 spy shots, courtesy of our friends at Motor.es, show that the hatchback will continue to have an ICE or hybrid powertrain, and while the overall silhouette is similar, its design is quite a departure from the current car.
  1. Next-gen Hyundai i20 features new design language
  2. Interior expected with more tech and comfort features
  3. May use a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine set to debut on the Bayon

New-gen i20 for India will be a sub-4-metre model, unlike the international-spec car

New Hyundai i20 side profile

From the spy shots, one can see that the all-new Hyundai i20 sports a new design compared to the model that’s currently on sale in India and abroad. As mentioned above, the overall shape is similar to its predecessor, but the next-gen i20 has new LED headlights with daylight running lamps mounted high, a new front grille and bumper design, and a reshaped bonnet with sharper edges.

Other noticeable differences include the new-design dual-tone alloy wheels, a sharper window line and doors that feature sharper corners, new outside rearview mirrors with integrated turn indicators, differently designed tail-lights and tweaked rear bumper styling. It should be noted that the i20 on sale in India ducks under the sub-4-metre length to take advantage of our country’s incentives for compact cars, while the Euro-spec model is 4,065mm long. The same is likely for the next-gen model.

New Hyundai i20 interior and features

An ADAS suite is likely to be offered for the new India-spec i20

While the spy shots do not show the new-gen i20’s cabin, the interior is expected to be an upgrade over the current model in terms of comfort and features. Perhaps it will feature the new curved display, which incorporates an infotainment touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster, seen on the upcoming second-gen Venue. Further details on the new i20’s interior are not available at the moment. However, a major safety kit upgrade for the India-spec next-gen i20 is likely to be the addition of an ADAS suite. Whether it’ll be the camera-based one seen on the current Venue or the camera- and radar-based one available with the Creta is unknown.

Hybrid powertrain based on the new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine could be offered

Abroad, the i20 gets petrol and mild-hybrid petrol engine options, which are likely to continue, albeit with tweaks to make them compliant with upcoming emission norms. Rumours were floating around the internet that an all-electric version of the i20 is also under development. However, that is likely to be the Ioniq 2, scheduled to be revealed at next month’s Munich motor show.

The new i20 for India is also expected to continue with the same engine options that are currently available – an 84hp, 1.2-litre petrol for standard variants and a 120hp, 1.0-litre turbo-petrol for N Line variants. However, the new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, which will make its debut on the Bayon and is hybrid-compatible, may also be an option on the new i20.

New Hyundai i20 India launch likely in FY2027-28

New i20 to follow Hyundai Bayon to India

Hyundai is expected to showcase the all-new i20 sometime next year, while an international launch is likely sometime in 2027. For India, the Korean brand could bring the fourth-gen i20 in the 2027-28 fiscal year, and it’ll be preceded by the new Hyundai Bayon, an i20-based crossover that is expected in mid-2026.
