5. Datsun Go CVT   7/10

Datsun Go CVT

The automatic version of the Datsun Go goes one up on its AMT-equipped rivals, thanks to its use of a more sophisticated CVT gearbox. While the expensive hardware does push prices above the Rs 6 lakh mark, you also get a relatively smoother drive. That said, the Go’s CVT is not the best example of its kind, with the CVT’s rubber band effect playing spoil sport. Noise insulation could have also been better. Performance is fine in town but the light weight means the Go feels out of its comfort zone on the highway.

Datsun Go CVT
VariantPrice (ex-showroom, Delhi)
Go T CVTRs 5.94 lakh
Go T (O) CVTRs 6.18 lakh

4. Maruti Suzuki Celerio   7/10

Maruti Celerio AMT

The Celerio popularised AMT gearboxes in India when it first arrived in February 2014, though the unit that’s available now has been refined over the years and, today, it is relatively smooth shifting. Its creep function works reasonably well too. Excellent economy from the 68hp, 1.0-litre petrol engine is another plus point. Of the other things, the Maruti Celerio’s cabin space is a highlight but the interior lacks features such as a touchscreen infotainment system that’s available in more affordable models.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio AMT
VariantPrice (ex-showroom, Delhi)
Celerio VXI AMTRs 5.08 lakh
Celerio VXI AMT(O)Rs 5.15 lakh
Celerio ZXI AMTRs 5.34 lakh
Celerio ZXI AMT(O)Rs 5.43 lakh

3. Hyundai Santro   8/10

Hyundai Santro AMT

Hyundai’s first model to come with an AMT gearbox, the Santro’s transmission is smooth and refined, with minimal pauses between gear shifts. There’s also a Tiptronic mode on offer to shift gears manually. The AMT unit is well-tuned, and works well with the 69hp, 1.1-litre petrol engine’s laidback, but linear power delivery. This budget hatchback has a spacious cabin and comes loaded with kit. However, the Hyundai Santro AMT is pricier than its rivals and the cost-cutting measures are a bit too evident in some areas.

Hyundai Santro AMT
VariantPrice (ex-showroom, Delhi)
Santro Magna AMTRs 5.31 lakh
Santro Sportz AMTRs 5.71 lakh

2. Tata Tiago   8/10

Tata Tiago AMT

An automated manual transmission (AMT) adds a dose of convenience to the already likable Tata Tiago. Like rivals, a manual mode and a creep function are standard on the AMT, though there’s also a ‘Sport’ mode that helps performance to some degree. Sure, the Tata AMT system isn’t the slickest around but the Tiago’s cabin space, big car demeanour and genuine value make it a great choice for automatic buyers on a budget. The Tiago has been updated over 2019, and the feature list now also includes a digital instrument cluster. You will have to pay relatively big bucks for the fully-loaded version, however. Also note, a facelift with a BS6-spec engine comes soon and is worth the wait.

Tata Tiago AMT
VariantPrice (ex-showroom, Delhi)
Tiago XZARs 5.85 lakh
Tiago XZA+Rs 6.40 lakh
Tiago XZA+ Dual ToneRs 6.47 lakh

1. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R   8/10

Maruti Wagon R AMT

The latest-gen Wagon R is available with two petrol engine options – a 68hp, 1.0-litre and an 83hp, 1.2-litre. Both engines can be had with the convenience of an AMT gearbox, though it’s the larger engine that delivers the stronger performance and is the one to buy. The AMT gearbox is also pretty smooth and shifts come in a timely manner. Do note, as spacious, practical and easy-to-drive the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is, it’s not an ideal highway car, even if it is more sure-footed than its predecessors.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R AMT
VariantPrice (ex-showroom, Delhi)
Wagon R VXI AMT 1.0LRs 5.34 lakh
Wagon R VXI AMT 1.0L(O)Rs 5.41 lakh
Wagon R VXI AMT 1.2LRs 5.57 lakh
Wagon R VXI AMT 1.2L(O)Rs 5.64 lakh
Wagon R ZXI AMT 1.2LRs 5.91 lakh
