2022 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: cosmetic, feature updates

Maruti has introduced two new, dual-tone colour options on the Wagon R – Gallant Red with Black roof and Magma Grey with Black roof. The dual tone paint shades are exclusively available on the top-spec ZXI+ variants of the tallboy, at a markup of Rs 12,000 over the single-tone paint shades.

With the update, the Wagon R also sees the addition of blacked-out alloy wheels – a step up over the previous model year which got steel rims with wheel covers even on the fully loaded ZXI trims.

On the inside, Maruti says it’s changed the colour scheme of the fabric upholstery to “beige and dark grey melange”.

While all these updates do add a dose of freshness, there are no other significant changes on the cosmetic front. In terms of features, the automatics now get a hill-start assist function. Also, with dual airbags becoming mandatory, Maruti has had to discontinue the single airbag versions of the Wagon R.

2022 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: engine updates and variant rejig

In the run up to the CAFE 2 norms, which will introduce a stricter limit on the average CO2 emissions of every automaker’s vehicle range from this April, Maruti has updated the 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre engines of the Wagon R. Both units now feature Dual Jet, Dual VVT (variable valve timing), cooled EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and ISS (idle start-stop) tech, in order to achieve better fuel efficiency and lower tailpipe emissions.

The 1.0-litre petrol engine is essentially from the new Celerio. In the petrol-only variants, it puts out 67hp (1hp lower than before). The dual-fuel variants, meanwhile, are rated to produce 65hp in petrol mode (down by 3hp) and 57hp in CNG mode (down by 2hp). While CNG was available as a factory-fit option only on the entry-level LXI trim earlier, the choice has now been extended to the mid-spec VXI variant as well.

The 1.2-litre engine is borrowed from the updated Swift and Dzire, and the new Baleno. The power output of the larger hearted engine is now pegged at 90hp (7hp more than earlier).

Notably, the 1.2-litre unit is now no longer available in the VXI trim, and a new, range-topping ZXI+ variant has been introduced.

2022 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: mileage

Already known for its laser sharp focus on fuel efficiency, Maruti has been able to improve the mileage of the Wagon R, thanks to the updated engines.

The company says that the 1.0-litre engine delivers a claimed mileage of 25.19kpl in the petrol-only VXI AMT trim – 16 percent higher than before. CNG versions are pegged to deliver an official 34.05km per kg – 5 percent higher than before. The 1.2-litre petrol can achieve a claimed 24.43kpl in the ZXI AMT and ZXI+ AMT trims, which is a 19 percent improvement.
