Hello, Autocar. I am considering purchasing a new bike, and my shortlisted options are the RE Shotgun 650, Bear 650, Himalayan and Classic 650. My daily usage is not much, just a 5km commute to the office and back. I primarily want good suspension and design. Please share your advice. If there is any other model you would recommend, please mention it.

Of the three Royal Enfield 650s you have shortlisted, none of them has particularly comfortable rear suspension, especially so in the city. The Himalayan 450 would be the logical choice between the four you have considered but if you want something a little more manageable and nimble inside the city, you can look at its sibling - the Guerrilla 450.
If you want something that will stand out and look good, the Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 is a unique option that you can consider. Underneath its svelte, Swedish bodywork are the KTM 390 Duke chassis and engine, so you should have a supremely talented bike that will also be uncommon.

I own a Classic 350 which I have ridden only 20,000 km in the last 10 years. I want to buy a faster bike, like the Duke 390. However, that bike will also be used only once a week. Should I buy a new one, or is a pre-owned bike a better option?

A new bike will come with a warranty, and you will be the first one to break it in, so the peace of mind of buying a new machine is not to be discounted. 

If you are looking at older bikes that are 4-5 years old or more, then you will also need to budget for a comprehensive service and perhaps some replacement cycle parts like tyres and brakes. 

While the KTM 390 Duke is a great option, you could also look at the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 since you've already owned a bike from the same brand.

I want to upgrade my almost 10 year old classic 350. I'm confused about the new Triumph T4, scram 440 and the Guerrilla 440. My budget is expandable and my daily commute is around 40 km. I want a comfortable bike with minimum maintenance. My ride will mostly city with occasional highway touring. My main priority is comfort and ride quality. Please suggest a good motorcycle.

Of the three bikes you have shortlisted, we would suggest you choose between the Triumph Speed T4 and the Royal Enfield Scram 440. These two will be more comfortable, although the Royal Enfield Guerrilla will give you more performance on the highway. 

Since you've already owned a Royal Enfield Classic, the latest Royal Enfield Bullet / Classic is also worth taking a good look at because they will offer you good comfort and ride quality - both of which are important to you. 

You can alternatively also look at the Honda CB350 models because they are comfortable, smooth, well-built and torquey. 

A test ride of your shortlisted bikes will help you decide which is the best option for you.

My Highness is smooth and great for two-up riding. I’ve taken it on trips to Kerala and Tawang. Now I want a bike that is compact, fast, and has good suspension for Mumbai city use. Which bike would you suggest?

Some options you can consider are the TVS Apache RTR 310, KTM 390 Duke, Triumph Speed 400 and Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450. The Triumph and Royal Enfield aren't as overly sporty as the other two and will have a more effortless riding experience owing to their torque delivery, which is earlier in the rev band. 

The KTM 390 Duke is a proven product when it comes to sheer speed, but in its latest avatar has become quite compact, which may not be the best thing if you are a larger person. 

Last but not least, the TVS Apache RTR 310 has great handling and reasonable performance. We would recommend getting the variant with the quickshifter on the TVS as that offers the best value for your money. 

Take a test ride of everything you're considering before you decide.

Keeping your requirements in mind, you can take a look at bikes like the Triumph Speed 400, Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450, TVS Apache RTR 310 and Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z.
All of them will offer a significant step up from your current bike but will still be friendly and won't overpower you. Take a test ride of all these (and any other machines you shortlist) before you go ahead with your purchase.

Between the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 and the Triumph Scrambler 400 X, which is better for daily rides and touring?

As an all-rounder, the Triumph Scrambler 400 X makes more sense because it has a commanding riding position, great suspension comfort, and lovely city manners. However, it feels a bit breathless on the highway beyond 100 kph, so if you don’t ride past that speed often, it’s a great option.
On the other hand, the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 is a more engaging bike with better handling on twisty roads due to its wider tyres and 17-inch front wheel. It also feels more at home when doing fast highway speeds.

Please reply, Autocar. I am planning to upgrade from Hunter 350. I have shortlisted three bikes: the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450, Triumph Speed 400, and Triumph Scrambler 400 X (though I’m concerned about its height). My height is 5'3 tall with an inseam of 28. I planned for ADV, but due to a lack of confidence with height, I am not sure whether it would be the right choice. So, I request you to give me practical advice. My budget is ₹3.3 lakh.

Since you haven't specified what sort of riding you're planning to do, it will be a little difficult to guide you accurately. In our experience, the Triumph Speed 400 is a lovely city bike and can comfortably go on the highway too, as long as you don't cross 110kph.
The Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 is also a credible option with good versatility, but its suspension can feel a little stiffer initially. We recommend a thorough test ride of both of these before you choose.
The Triumph Scrambler 400 X will feel quite tall, and if you're not confident, stick to the other two approachable roadsters.

I’m 47 years old and 5'11" tall. I’m confused between the Yezdi Roadster 2025, Honda CB350RS, and Guerrilla 450. I need a bike for both long rides and city office use. I take road trips of 400-500 km quarterly. I previously owned a Royal Enfield Thunderbird X. Please suggest which bike would be best for me.

Among the bikes you have shortlisted, we'd recommend choosing between the RE Guerrilla 450 or the Honda CB350RS. The Guerrilla is better suited for highway rides, thanks to its more powerful engine. On the other hand, the CB350RS makes a great city bike with its light clutch and smooth, torquey motor.

In a similar price range, the RE Scram 440 is also worth considering. It can comfortably cruise at 100-110 km/h on highways and offers good suspension comfort for broken city roads.

If you’re open to stretching your budget a little, the RE Himalayan 450 is another strong contender. It’s a wonderful highway tourer and still quite manageable for city use.

Hi, I’ve been riding the H’ness 350 for the last 4 years. It’s been a great, refined machine. Now, I want to upgrade to a slightly more powerful bike with a retro look but low maintenance cost. Is the Speed 400 expensive to maintain?

The Triumph Speed 400 is built entirely by Bajaj, which means its spare parts are easy to find and light on the pocket. 

We’d also suggest checking out the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450. It offers similar performance and running costs, and you might find it a great fit for your riding style too.
