Skoda Octavia RS vs Volkwagen Golf GTi

There’s no simpler way to compare one car’s performance to another than with a head-to-head quarter-mile race. In this edition of Autocar India’s quarter-mile racing series, we’ve brought together two of the hottest performance cars in the market that you can buy for a reasonable sum of money – the Skoda Octavia RS and the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The Octavia RS is soon set to return in limited numbers, while the Golf GTI, too, is expected to get a second allocation. Let’s find out which of these is quicker down the drag strip.

The Golf GTI and Octavia RS are mechanically identical – both use a 2.0-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine that produces 265hp and 370Nm of peak torque. In both cars, the engine is paired to a 7-speed DCT, and drive is sent to the front wheels. However, the Golf GTI has a little advantage in the weight department owing to its body style – it is 74kg lighter than the Octavia RS. Meanwhile, the Octavia RS gets grippier Pirelli P Zero tyres, so it’s all to play for.

In round 1, the Golf GTI got the better launch, while the Octavia struggled with some wheelspin. The Golf held on to its lead, finishing 0.261 seconds ahead of the Octavia RS. In round 2, the Skoda got a better launch and improved its time by a tenth, but the Volkswagen also improved on its time and finished ahead with an even wider margin of 0.343 seconds. The weight advantage made the Golf GTI consistently quicker than the Octavia RS down the drag strip.

Autocar India’s testing standards

Before we conduct our performance tests, we check and maintain tyre pressures based on the manufacturer’s recommendation and ensure the car has a full tank of fuel. The car is then tested in a controlled environment, and the data is collected via highly accurate GPS-based timing equipment.
