Midsize SUVs ranked by the largest boot

Midsize SUVs blend versatility and practicality in a way that caters to a huge set of buyers. Apart from smaller cubbies in the cabin meant for storing knick-knacks, road trips or frequent airport runs mandate a sizeable boot. So, here are a few midsize SUVs that have the largest boot with their last row of seats in place, ranked in ascending order.

9. Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder

Midsize SUVs ranked by the largest boot

The petrol-only variants of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder get a 373-litre boot, which puts them at the bottom of this list. While the opening is well-sized and the boot’s depth is decent, outright space is low. It gets much worse if you pick one of the Hybrid variants, where boot space is only 265 litres.

8. Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun

The Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun both offer 385 litres of boot space with the rear seats in place. The low boot floor makes it easy to store tall items, while fixed tethering hooks can be used to hang a couple of small grocery bags. The Kushaq and Taigun’s boot can further be expanded to a cavernous 1,405 litres by tucking away the second row.

7. Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos

Similar to the German duo above, the Korean twins have similar-sized boot – 433 litres. Things such as the design of the parcel tray and the boot’s overall shape are nearly identical on both the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. While the left-rear wheel arch reduces the boot’s usability to an extent, users can fold down the (60:40-split) rear seats and liberate additional space.

6. Citroen Aircross X

The 5-seat version of the Citroen Aircross X offers a respectable 444 litres of boot space with its rear seats ‘up’. The boot floor is deep enough to be useful, but opening the tailgate reveals a relatively narrow aperture that some may find cumbersome. The second row also doesn't get a split-folding functionality.

5. Mahindra Thar Roxx

Despite what its large and rugged exterior may lead you to believe, the 447-litre boot of the Mahindra Thar Roxx is only slightly larger than the Tata Harrier’s. The old-school split-opening tailgate design looks cool but can be a bother, especially during inclement weather or when you are on an incline. The Thar’s boxy shape and high roof handle light weekend shopping well, but you will have to fold down the rear seats if you want some serious boot space.

4. MG Astor

The MG Astor finds itself on the number 5 spot, courtesy of its 448-litre boot. Furthermore, its square shape and decently sized aperture reduce the effort required to access this space during loading or unloading. In case you need even more luggage space, the Astor gets 60:40 split-folding rear seats.

3. Honda Elevate

One look at this square and smartly shaped boot will tell you why the Honda Elevate ranks high on our list. At 458 litres, the Elevate’s boot is large enough to accommodate your family’s luggage for a weekend getaway. Its wide opening and symmetrical shape make loading items easy, while the sizeable parcel tray hides the boot’s contents quite well.

2. Citroen Basalt X

Its coupe-like styling and a sloping rear design may hide it very well, but the Citroen Basalt X actually boasts a 470-litre boot. While the general shape and sloped backrests of the rear seats limit this boot’s overall practicality, it is still good for those last-minute airport runs. The Basalt X’s deep boot helps swallow luggage without much protest.

1. Tata Curvv

Similar in its styling and mission to the Basalt X, the Tata Curvv’s 500-litre boot is larger still. It is not only deep, but it offers width and a low-enough floor as well. This, along with multiple bag hooks, makes carrying grocery bags a breeze. The capacious and well-packaged boot will also come in handy should you decide to embark on a long road trip.
