Once among the fastest-growing segments in the country, compact sedans have now taken a back seat to SUVs, as buyers increasingly prefer the SUV body style. However, despite this shift in market preference, the sub-4-meter sedan segment continues to retain strong value in the pre-owned car market.

Maruti Dzire petrol-manual depreciates slower than its segment rivals
Among the four key models evaluated, the Maruti Dzire, particularly in its petrol-manual variant, commands the highest residual value. Interestingly, the average resale prices of the Honda Amaze and Hyundai Aura are higher than those of the Dzire.
The Tata Tigor stands out for its depreciation pattern. Like in the new car space, it is the most affordable of the four in the used car market, with four- and five-year-old models showing the steepest decline in value compared to its rivals.
Autocar India-Spinny Resale Value Study
This finding is based on a joint study conducted by Autocar India in collaboration with Spinny, a leading used car platform operational in 22 cities across India, including Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Indore. Spinny provided average selling prices (ASP) derived from actual transactions of 21,944 cars sold across its network during the 2024 calendar year.
For the purpose of the study, if a particular model had multiple engine options of the same fuel type, or came in multiple variants, these were merged and averaged. Depreciation was calculated as the percentage difference between a car’s on-road price in its year of manufacture and its resale price in 2024.
