The 5-seater model’s lower-spec Premium RWD variant is offered with a 64kWh battery pack with a 500km (WLTP) range, paired with a 299hp electric motor. Exterior Design And Engineering

5

The Model Y’s shape is more crossover than SUV, with decent ground clearance and a sloping roofline aiding aero efficiency. Flush handles, aero wheels and a new split headlamp design also help here. Neat touches include a backlit rear tesla wordmark and hidden exterior cameras. A powered tailgate opens to a 822-litre boot and there’s a 117-litre frunk too.

Interior Space And Comfort

8

The cabin follows Tesla’s minimalist philosophy, anchored by a 15.4-inch touchscreen that handles nearly all functions. Material quality is decent, though not befitting the price. Rear passengers get a second screen with media playback and HVAC controls. There’s ample rear head and legroom, and comfy seats, but no blinds or roof shade, which could be an issue in hot weather.

Features And Safety

8

Minimal physical controls make even basic functions tricky to use while driving. However, the screen is fast, sharp and intuitive. Eight cameras enable ADAS and Autopilot self driving (a Rs 6 lakh option, not yet functional in India). Safety features include 9 airbags, blind spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and Sentry mode. There are also fun Tesla quirks like games, pet mode, ‘biohazard mode’ and more.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

8

Two versions are offered: RWD with 500km range (64kWh battery) and Long Range RWD with 622km (78kWh). Efficiency feels strong in daily driving with regen enabled. Though Superchargers are coming, it uses CCS2 in India. Fast charging supports up to 175kW (RWD) or 250kW (Long Range), giving 267km of range in 15 minutes, depending on infrastructure.

Performance And Refinement

8

The RWD makes 299hp, the Long Range 340hp; both do 0-100kph under 6 seconds. Power delivery is linear and friendly, not aggressive. Standard and Chill drive modes, plus two regen settings, offer flexibility. It’s ideal for first-time EV drivers, though more powerful rivals with dual motors feel punchier and more dynamic in spirited driving or highway overtakes.

Ride Comfort And Handling

7

The suspension feels firm, especially at low speeds, but delivers composure as speed rises. Steering is light and quick, with good visibility aiding city driving. Ride quality isn’t plush, not helped by the 19-inch wheels and suspension setup. No adaptive dampers, but the chassis adjusts to load. It’s planted, agile, and confidence-inspiring, if not the cushiest.

Value For Money

6

Priced at Rs 60–68 lakh (ex-showroom), the Model Y feels costly given its competition. Its tech, design, and badge appeal to early adopters, but rivals now offer more power, better finish, and greater excitement. Still, its futuristic interface, spacious cabin, and Tesla’s iconic status will be enough of a draw for some tech-forward Indian EV buyers.

I am thinking of a EV car within Rs.60 lacs. My priorities are good ride quality and rear seat comfort since it will be used by my parents. I am considering th3 BMW IX1 lwb, Tesla model Y and Byd sealion. My apprehension with tesla is after sales service since I am based in Odisha. Which one would you recommend?

Hi Autocar Team, I am Surya from Hyderabad. We are a family of 4 (2 adults and chilrdren 13 and 16 years old) and planning to buy an EV car. Our budget is around 55-65 lakhs. We have shortlisted BMW iX1, Tesla Model Y L and Merc CLA. We are worried about ground clearance with Tesla and Merc while range with BMW. Our drive is mostly within city and once in a month drive to our native place which is 350 kms from Hyderabad. Can you help me choosing right car for my family? Thanks in advance !!

Hi Autocar team, I am looking for a premium EV. I am confused between the BYD Sealion, Model Y, and Model YL. We are a family of four with mostly city driving and take outstation trips twice a month of about 350-400 km. Which would be the best option in terms of value for money? I also like sporty looks. We plan to set up home charging. I currently drive a Skoda Superb and am looking to replace it.

Go for the BYD Sealion 7. For a family of four stepping out of a Superb, it’s the comfier daily - softer ride, quieter cabin and a roomier rear bench than the Model Y, so city runs and school-office duty feel easy. Your 350-400 km trips should not be an issue with the big battery and fast-charging capabilities. It also gives similar range and kit for less money, so it’s the stronger value. The design is sleek enough and performance is properly quick for India, and though both are limited, BYD car has the edge on dealer network and reach at the moment. The Model Y is more playful to drive and its software and driver aids are slicker. It is the more tech forward choice, and if that's what you're after, it might be worth considering. The Model Y L definitely has the edge on space, although its real-world range and comfort is yet to be proven. It is a much larger vehicle, however, so driving in the city could be cumbersome compared to the others. The Y L is also quite a bit more expensive than the Sealion 7. Test drive both and see if you have a preference, as both the Tesla and BYD are good options, but we would pick the Sealion 7 for your requirement.

I have a budget of 70lakhs. Please suggest which EV to buy. I am more inclined towards the TESLA Model YL.

If you're already leaning towards the Tesla Model Y L, you should go for it, as, for the money, it's one of the best EVs out there. At this time, we're yet to review the L, but the improvements it promises over the standard-wheelbase models are impressive. For one, there's the additional space, captain's chairs for the second row and a usable third row, which already elevates it above most others at this price point. The already long list of features gets an upgrade with heating and ventilation in the second row, faster wireless chargers and an upgraded sound system. They've even added adaptive dampers, which should address a big criticism of the standard models - a harsh ride quality. The biggest gains, however, appear to have been to performance and range, thanks to a dual-motor setup with around 500hp, and with a 681km WLTP range, expect upwards of 500km on a full charge in the real world, as Tesla cars are known to be quite efficient. Downsides you should be aware of - the wheelbase is 150mm longer, but ground clearance has only gone up by 2mm (now 169mm), so be careful over speed breakers. And shortcomings of the old remain, like very few buttons on the interior, and a quality that doesn't feel good enough at this price range. However, we're sure you're familiar with the vehicle already, as you're already inclined towards it. Another alternative that's very appealing is the new Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric, which has an even longer range and tech that's arguably on par with Tesla. However, it is nowhere near as spacious as the Model Y L.

Hi, I'm planning to buy my first luxury car, preferably an SUV. We are a family of 4 adults and 1 child. My daily run is approx 30 kms, mainly within the city and then occasionally, once a month, a highway run. Total monthly running is around 1000 kms. My budget is between 50-60 lacs. I'm currently confused between BMW iX1 LWB, BYD sealion, Toyota Fortuner and newly launched Tesla model Y L (least likely due to concerns of resale value of Tesla 5 years down the line and uncertainty regarding import duties). I can also consider waiting for the upcoming BMW iX3 and Mercedes GLC EV. Will it be worth the wait of almost another 10-12 months, yes I'm aware of the fact that I'll have to stretch my budget a little bit for these two. Kindly advise. Thanks a lot

The BMW iX1 LWB is the strongest value-for-money package here, priced at Rs. 53-54 lakh. It gives you a solid luxury badge, a spacious and practical cabin, good tech and features, and an enjoyable driving experience at a very competitive price for what this BMW car offers. The BYD Sealion 7 also delivers a very premium experience and, if anything, feels a touch more luxurious inside than the iX1, with strong performance and range. However, the BYD car still cannot match BMW for badge pull, dealer reach and long-term service ecosystem, which matters for a first luxury purchase. We actually quite like the Tesla Model Y L: it’s very aggressively priced for a three-row imported EV, gives you all-wheel drive, excellent range and that useful third row where your child can sit comfortably and safely. Your concern about resale is valid, but most EVs take a bigger depreciation hit anyway, and because the Model Y L is priced keenly for a CBU, the percentage drop in value may not be disproportionately worse than rivals if demand holds up. Also, there is unlikely to be any import duty reduction that may impact the resale value of the Tesla car in the near future since the Model Y is made in China. The upcoming BMW iX3 and Mercedes GLC EV will likely feel the most premium and high-tech of all, with plenty of wow factor, especially in their cabins and brand perception. They will definitely be more expensive and, realistically, you’re looking at at least another 6-10 months before they’re easily available, so you have to weigh that wait and budget stretch against how soon you want to start enjoying the car.
