The Tesla Model Y is available in two versions: standard rear-wheel drive and long-wheelbase all-wheel drive (called Model Y L). However, the differences go well beyond wheelbase and drive layout, extending to range, charging times, acceleration, features and price. Here, we compare the Model Y with the Model Y L across those areas.
Tesla India does not categorically list details such as battery size, power and torque figures. For this comparison, we have referred to the Australia-spec version where necessary, as it is also a right-hand-drive model. For exact details, it’s best to reach out to your nearest Tesla showroom.
Tesla Model Y standard vs LWB variants: Prices
Comparing the ex-showroom prices, the standard variant is Rs 11.1 lakh more affordable than the Model Y L. At the time of writing, Tesla India’s website shows an on-road difference of Rs 11.21 lakh. Tesla Model Y standard vs LWB variants: Specs
While both ride on 19-inch wheels, their wheel designs differ. Compared with the standard-wheelbase Model Y, the Y L version is 179mm longer, 44mm taller and has a 150mm longer wheelbase. Ground clearance is also slightly higher by 2mm. It further distinguishes itself with a six-seat layout, whereas the standard model seats five.
Tesla Model Y standard vs LWB variants: Battery, range
*Australia-spec Model Y L
Apart from top speed, the two Model Y versions differ in every other area. The Model Y L gets a 25.2kWh larger battery, at 88.2kWh, and it also switches from RWD to AWD. Its combined output of 514hp is more than twice that of the standard model, and it is 0.9 seconds quicker in the 0-100kph sprint.
Range is another major difference. The Model Y L can go 181km farther on a full charge, with a claimed WLTP range of 681km. Its charging time is quicker, too, thanks to a maximum 250kW DC fast-charging speed that is 75kW higher than that for the standard Model Y. That helps it add 288km of range in 15 minutes, which is 50km more than the standard version.
Tesla claims it has updated the suspension system for this long-wheelbase version, which features adaptive suspension and electronic damping shocks. The carmaker is offering a standard 4-year or 80,000km warranty on the Model Y. The battery and drive unit are covered for 8 years or 1.6 lakh km (Model Y)/1.92 lakh km (Model Y L).
Tesla Model Y standard vs LWB variants: Features
Design-wise, the Model Y L looks similar to the standard version, aside from its different wheel design. In profile, the longer rear doors stand out, along with a slightly tweaked roofline and a larger rear quarter glass. At the back, it also gets a more pronounced boot-lid spoiler. There’s also a ‘Model Y L’ badge with two slanting strokes on the tailgate to distinguish the longer, six-seat version.

The Model Y L’s cabin is largely unchanged and carries over a minimalist theme. Nearly everything is controlled through the 16-inch central touchscreen. Even the 5-seater models feature a 16-inch touchscreen, up from the 15.4-inch unit offered previously. An 8-inch touchscreen for rear passengers is on offer. The list of common features also includes powered, heated and ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, powered front and rear AC vents, a panoramic glass roof, a heated steering wheel and windshield, a dashcam and eight cameras.

But the Model Y L adds a few more comfort features than the standard-wheelbase version. It gets an upgraded sound system with 18 speakers and a subwoofer, unlike the 9-speaker setup in the standard variant. The front seats also get thigh-support extensions. As a six-seater, the Model Y L uses captain seats in the second row, which have electric armrests, one-touch folding, ventilation and heating. The third-row seats get powered recline and one-touch fold functions, along with dedicated AC vents.
In India’s premium EV space, the Tesla Model Y takes on rivals such as the BYD Sealion 7 (Rs 49.4-54.9 lakh), BMW iX1 LWB (Rs 51.4 lakh), Kia EV6 (Rs 65.97 lakh), Volvo EC40 (Rs 59 lakh) and Mini Countryman Electric (Rs 55.65-66.9 lakh).
