Nine months after introducing the Model Y in India, Tesla has now launched the long-wheelbase variant of the crossover EV. The Model Y L shares several similarities with the standard-wheelbase five-seater variant but incorporates changes that make it more practical for family buyers in the premium EV segment. While India is the latest market to get the right-hand-drive Tesla Model Y L after Australia and New Zealand, the car itself has been on sale in markets like China, Hong Kong and South Korea, among other Asian countries.

1. How does the Tesla Model Y L differ on the outside?

The long-wheelbase variant is noticeably larger than the standard-wheelbase Model Y

The Model Y measures 4,976mm in length, 1,982mm in width, 1,668mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 3,040mm. Not only is the Model Y L 179mm longer and 44mm taller than the standard car, but it also adds 150mm to the wheelbase. This growth in dimensions is reflected in the raised and extended roofline, plus an expanded rear-quarter glass area. Because of these changes, the Model Y L also looks visually bulkier than the standard car.

The alloy rims are still 19 inches, but the sealed-off design of these ‘Machina 2.0’ two-tone wheels indicates further aero optimisation. The long-wheelbase Model Y is available with six exterior colours – the same as the standard-wheelbase version. The only other exterior add-on is a larger duck-tail spoiler and a version-specific badge on the tailgate.

2. What is new inside the Tesla Model Y L?

Has an extra row of seats in the back over the standard-wheelbase version

The extra length and wheelbase have allowed Tesla to squeeze in a third row of seats in the Model Y L. However, because the middle row of the Model Y L gets individual captain seats instead of the five-seater’s bench unit, the seating capacity has only grown by one to a total of six occupants. Moreover, the last set of seats is located right beneath the rear windscreen, which could limit headroom for taller passengers. Tesla has provided dedicated AC vents and cup holders for the third-row passengers, though.

Those seated in the middle row are offered individual pop-up armrests, cup holders and USB ports. These power-operated captain seats feature integrated headrests, with the front seats mimicking a similar design. While the rear windows of the standard version taper sharply towards the rear, the reduced slope of the roof here means that the windows of the Model Y L are taller.

The boot space behind the third row is 420 litres – expanding to 1,076 litres once the split-folding seats are stowed – which is done electronically. Other version-specific details include a repositioned inside rearview mirror (IRVM) and a textured finish on top of the dashboard.

3. What features does the Tesla Model Y L come with?

The equipment list is mostly comparable to what is offered in the five-seater Model Y

Features such as the primary 16-inch touchscreen, an 8-inch rear infotainment display, a fixed panoramic glass roof, dual wireless chargers and multi-colour ambient lighting are shared with the five-seater Model Y. The six-seater Model Y L also shares other conveniences like connected-car features, in-car streaming services, automatic climate control with power-operated vents and powered front seats with heating and cooling functionalities with the five-seater variants. The audio system comprises 18 speakers plus a subwoofer, while the updated suspension system of the Model Y L comes with adaptive dampers.

The front touchscreen continues to be central to operating many of the Model Y’s features – including the selection of drive modes, headlamp settings, HVAC settings and more. The Model Y L gets advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-watch cameras and blind-spot monitoring, among others. There are also nine airbags and eight exterior cameras – the latter being part of Tesla’s Autopilot autonomous driving suite, which is awaiting regulatory clearance in India.

4. Are there any powertrain changes to the Tesla Model Y L?

This new variant is based on the Long Range All-Wheel Drive Model Y

The American marque is not known to publicise all technical details of its cars, including information on battery capacity, horsepower and torque. That said, the Model Y L’s dual-motor setup provides all-wheel drive and has an estimated combined system output of 514hp and 590Nm. The claimed WLTP range is 681km, and the brand claims that connecting to a Tesla Supercharger will add 288km of range in 15 minutes. Speaking of which, the electric crossover is capable of accepting up to 250kW on DC fast charging and 11kW on AC charging. While not confirmed by Tesla, the battery capacity of the Model Y L is estimated to be 88.2kWh.

The larger dimensions, extra set of seats and long-range AWD configuration have made this variant 96kg heavier at 2,088kg. Tesla claims that the new Model Y L can sprint from 0 to 100kph in 5 seconds, which would make it the fastest accelerating Model Y on sale in India. The top speed of the Model Y L is pegged at 201kph by Tesla.

5. What is the price of the Tesla Model Y L?

The Model Y L costs Rs 5.9 lakh less than the Model Y Long Range RWD variant

The Model Y L is priced at Rs 61.99 lakh, which is Rs 5.9 lakh less than the range-topping Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive variant of the standard-wheelbase version. On the other hand, the new variant costs Rs 2.1 lakh more than the entry-level Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant. Customer deliveries for the Tesla Model Y L will start in June 2026, and its rivals in India include the BYD Sealion 7 and Volvo EC40.

All prices are ex-showroom, India.
