•1dI am planning to buy a car and would appreciate your guidance. My monthly salary is around ₹92,000, and my daily commute is taken care of by an office vehicle. I primarily plan to use the car for weekend outings and occasional trips. My wife and I are both around 6 feet tall, so good cabin space, headroom, and seating comfort are very important.

Autocar India
First, set your budget correctly. With a Rs 92,000 monthly salary, your safe car budget should be Rs 6-8 lakh on-road, and you should avoid stretching beyond ₹9 lakh. This keeps your finances comfortable and avoids unnecessary EMI pressure. The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R fits perfectly here, with on-road prices roughly starting around Rs 6 lakh and going up to about Rs 8 lakh depending on the variant. Now coming to EMI. If you take a typical loan with around Rs 1-1.5 lakh down payment, your EMI will roughly be in the ₹9,000-₹12,000 per month range depending on tenure, variant and interest rate. That is a healthy level for your salary and leaves room for other expenses. The Maruti Celerio fits your requirements well. It is compact, easy to drive for a beginner and extremely fuel-efficient, which keeps running costs low. In fact, it is among the most efficient cars in this segment, which directly benefits your monthly expenses . It is also reliable and inexpensive to maintain, which matters most at this stage of ownership. The Wagon R is the better choice if your height and comfort are a priority. At 6 ft, you will appreciate its tall-boy design, which offers better headroom and a more upright seating position. It also feels more spacious overall, especially for daily usability. If you want a crossover or an SUV, the Tata Punch in the lower variants will fit your budget. However, it is not as spacious as the Maruti options, and choosing a lower variant means you will miss out on features. It is also not as fuel-efficient as the Celerio or the Wagon R.

•4dI am planning to buy a new car. My annual income is Rs 7 lakh, and my job is 15 km from home. Which car should I buy among SUVs?

Autocar India
Your income and usage are the key factors here. With a Rs 7 lakh annual income and a short daily commute, you should prioritise low cost, ease of driving and reliability, and ideally look at cars in the Rs 6-8 lakh range. The Maruti Suzuki Celerio fits your requirements well. It is compact, very easy to drive for a beginner and extremely fuel-efficient, which keeps running costs low. It is also reliable and inexpensive to maintain, which matters most at this stage. If you prefer a higher seating position and better ground clearance, the Tata Punch is a suitable alternative. It offers an SUV-like stance, better road presence and feels more solid on bad roads.

•4dI am 35 years old and do not know how to drive a car yet. I have been riding a Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500 for the past 9 years. This will be my first car. My budget is ₹6.5 lakh, and I am looking for an automatic car. My height is 180 cm. Please suggest.

Autocar India
Go for the Maruti Suzuki Celerio AMT as your first car. It is the easiest and most stress-free automatic car to start with. The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R AMT is the second option if you want more space and height. As a beginner coming from a bike, the Celerio makes the most sense. It is compact, very easy to drive and has light controls, which builds confidence quickly in traffic. The AMT gearbox is simple to use and removes clutch stress completely. It is also extremely efficient, which keeps running costs low. Visibility is good, and its size is perfect for tight city driving and parking, where new drivers usually struggle. The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is the better choice if your height and comfort are a priority. At 180 cm, you will appreciate its tall-boy design. You sit more upright, get better headroom and easier ingress and egress. It also feels more spacious overall, especially for rear passengers. However, the Celerio looks more modern and is slightly easier to handle.

•1wI earn Rs 70,000 in hand and live in a village. My office is 15 km away. What would be an appropriate budget for a car, as I am completely new to this? My priority is low maintenance, and it should be a family car. As I am a government field officer, there will be regular travel.

Autocar India
Keep your budget around Rs 6-8 lakh and go for a simple petrol car. With a Rs 70,000 in-hand salary, the idea is to keep ownership easy and stress-free rather than stretching your budget, especially since your job involves regular travel and you are new to owning a car.For your usage, a petrol car makes the most sense as it is easier to maintain and better suited to mixed driving. Since you live in a village, focus on comfort, durability and ease of use over features or performance, because what will matter most is how reliably the car handles daily travel.Within this, go for the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R if you want maximum practicality. It is spacious, simple and extremely easy to live with, making it a perfect first car for both family use and regular travel. If you want something that feels a bit more modern and stylish while still being easy to own, then the Maruti Suzuki Celerio is a good alternative.

•1wI am looking to buy a hatchback under 6 lakh. Which one should I buy? Currently, I am driving a Santro 2019 model and am pretty much happy with it.

Autocar India
For mostly city use and with a hard cap of Rs. 6 lakh, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio LXi (manual) fits you best. It keeps the same easy, light feel you’re used to in the Santro, so traffic and parking stay simple. Space is good for this price, with a rear seat and boot that work better than those of very small cars, so daily chores and the odd airport run won’t feel tight. And like Hyundai, Maruti has a wide service reach and low running costs, which suits someone who just wants a simple, fuss-free car.Know that the LXI is the base version, so it is quite basic inside and does not come with a music system or wheel covers, though these can be added through dealer accessories. If you want a bit more style and features at this price, the Renault Kwid is also worth a look, but first check service support in your area.Overall, for your city use and budget, the Celerio LXI lines up best with what you described.

•2wI currently own a Maruti S-Cross and a Honda Brio, and I plan to replace both. My budget for a 5-seater SUV is around 15-16 lakh, and for a compact hatchback, around 6 lakh. Both cars will be used in the city, and I want petrol options that are easy to maintain and fun to drive. The SUV will occasionally be used for family trips with four people (2 adults and 2 kids). My must-have features include a rear parking camera, steering-mounted controls, automatic climate control, rear AC vents (in the SUV), and keyless entry. I really like my current cars, especially the Brio.

Autocar India
The Skoda Kushaq 1.0-litre turbo-petrol with the 8-speed automatic transmission is a fun-to-drive mid-size SUV that you can replace your Maruti S-Cross with. Its compact size makes it ideal for 2 adults and 2 kids, and the Classic+ variant will fall within your Rs 16 lakh budget, and it has most of the features listed, except a rear parking camera. You can also consider a Honda Elevate V CVT, which will be very easy to maintain and is fun to drive. With your Rs 6 lakh budget, though, you will only be able to get entry-level variants of the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios or mid variants of a Maruti Celerio and Tata Tiago. Between the three, the Nios has the nicest interior, while the Celerio's engine will be more efficient. Do keep in mind that neither of the three cars will be as fun to drive as your Brio. So, if your car is in good condition, you should retain it.

•4wI want to buy an automatic car for city driving, mainly for commuting between home and office. My budget is ₹7 lakh.

Autocar India
For your requirement of an automatic car under Rs 7 lakh for city driving, we would suggest going for the Maruti Suzuki Celerio VXI AMT.It is a proven product and well-suited for daily city use. The 1.0-litre petrol engine is refined for a 3-cylinder unit and feels responsive, with enough torque for typical city conditions. The AMT gearbox is well-calibrated and smooth, which makes it easy to drive in stop-go traffic. The Celerio is also compact and easy to park, which is important for city usage. At the same time, the cabin is surprisingly spacious and can comfortably seat four adults. If you want something with even more space, you can also consider the Maruti Wagon R VXI AMT, which just about fits within your budget.

•6wSuggest a good automatic car petrol within 6 lakh.

Autocar India
Unfortunately, you don't have too many automatic options within Rs 6 lakh (on-road). Your options are Maruti Alto, Maruti S-Presso, Renault Kwid, and thanks to some on-going discounts, you could even manage to get a Celerio VXi AMT, which is the nicest and most premium option among the ones listed.

•6wI am looking for a small automatic car primarily for city driving. My priorities are a low price and good fuel efficiency. Could you please suggest the best options available?

Autocar India
Unfortunately, given your tight budget of Rs 6 lakh, you don't have too many options. Choose between the Maruti Alto and the Maruti S-Presso, both of which come with the same 1-litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed AMT automatic gearbox. Both are also fairly similar in terms of fuel efficiency, with the Alto returning a claimed 24.90kpl while the S-presso is said to do a marginally higher 25.3kpl. Maruti Alto AT prices range between Rs 5.53 lakh to Rs 6.07 lakh (on-road Delhi), while S-presso automatic prices range between Rs 5.31 lakh and Rs 5.85 lakh (on-road Delhi). Alternatively, dealers will be offering discounts on models like the Maruti Celerio and Renault Kwid, so you could even consider those.

•7wI am planning to buy a new car under ₹7 lakh. I am looking for a car with smooth engine performance and enhanced safety features.

Autocar India
We would recommend you look at the Maruti Suzuki Celerio. Refinement from the 1.0 litre engine is much better than you would expect from a three-cylinder engine, and minimal vibrations filter into the cabin. The overall performance is smooth and easy for normal everyday driving, and at low city speeds, it even feels a bit eager, and it is thus quite enjoyable to drive. In terms of safety, the car is well equipped with safety features like 6 airbags, anti-locking brakes (ABS) and electronic stability program (ESP). It also scored a three-star crash safety rating in the GNCAP test. You can get cars with a better crash rating, like the Tata Tiago, for instance, but you will not find the engine as smooth.
