Hi team! I have owned a Ford Figo diesel for the past 10 years and would like to upgrade to a compact SUV. I’ve shortlisted the Kia Sonet and the Mahindra 3XO (both diesel). My annual running will be approximately 10,000-15,000 km in both city and highway conditions. I would like to hear your opinion on which car to buy and which transmission to choose for performance similar to my Figo. Also, please suggest the most value-for-money variant.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO is a solid upgrade from the Ford Figo, especially if space and comfort matter to you. Its punchy diesel engine, wide cabin and absorbent ride make it comfortable for five, while the 5-star crash test rating adds peace of mind.

The Kia Sonet, on the other hand, feels more premium inside and is easier to drive in the city thanks to its lighter controls. It also offers a larger boot and a smoother 6-speed torque converter automatic compared to the 3XO’s basic AMT, making it the better choice if you prefer an automatic.

Kia’s service experience and resale value are also likely to be stronger.

My on-road budget is around Rs 15 lakh. I am unable to decide between the Urban Cruiser Taisor, XUV 3XO, Nexon and Fronx. I am looking for good mileage, safety, AMT and a sunroof. Please guide me.

If you are looking for a sunroof, you will have to remove the Maruti Fronx and Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor from your consideration set, as neither of them gets one. Between the Tata Nexon and the Mahindra XUV 3XO, the Nexon is a better bet because of mileage and overall cabin space.
So go ahead with the Tata Nexon. In your budget, you can even look at Nexon Petrol DCT, which is a more responsive transmission than AMT.

I am looking to buy a new car with a maximum budget of ₹10-15 lakh. I want a car with a 4- or 5-star safety rating that delivers a decent fuel average. My usage will be mostly on weekends, with a maximum of 500-700 km per month. I want an automatic car, but not an AMT. My shortlist includes: Skoda Kyalq Signature Plus/Prestige TC 3XO AX5L Tata Nexon Creative Plus PS Dark 7 DCA Please suggest the best option.

Unfortunately, none of the turbo petrol options you listed will be very efficient. Given your limited running, this should not be a concern.

We would recommend choosing between the Skoda Kylaq and the Mahindra XUV 3XO. Both are engaging to drive, offer strong turbo petrol engines, smooth 6-speed torque converter automatics, and a comfortable ride.

The key difference is space. The Mahindra is the better five-seater thanks to its wider body, while the Skoda offers a larger and more practical boot.

The Tata Nexon remains one of the highest-selling cars in the segment, but it is also among the oldest and is due for an update.

Hello, I’m looking to buy a new automatic car, preferably an SUV, with a budget below ₹15 lakh. My usage will be mostly within the city, with occasional inter-city trips. I want good rear-seat legroom and do not want to compromise on safety. A 5-star rating with ADAS Level 2 is preferred. Please suggest a suitable model. Thanks.

For your needs, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is a good choice. It offers a spacious rear seat with ample legroom and a roomy cabin. This SUV is also rated five stars in BNCAP crash test ratings, and the AX5 L variant also gets ADAS. The automatic version is a shade above Rs 15 lakh, but it is worth spending the extra.

I am planning to buy a petrol automatic car for a family of 4, mainly for city use. My budget is under ₹15 lakh, and I do not want to compromise on safety or performance. Please suggest a suitable option.

Given your requirements, you should consider the Mahindra XUV 3XO. The SUV offers a spacious cabin that can easily accommodate up to 5 adults, comes with 6 airbags, Level 2 ADAS features, and has received a 5-star crash safety rating from Bharat NCAP.
The XUV 3XO comes with two turbo-petrol options, but since you want performance, it's best to opt for the 131hp, 1.2-litre direct-injection unit. This engine comes paired with a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox, which has a claimed fuel efficiency of 18.2kpl. Mahindra XUV 3XO TGDi-AT prices range from Rs 11.84 lakh to Rs 14.40 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

Hi, I own a Mahindra XUV 3XO AX5 petrol manual. My monthly driving is around 2,000km. I purchased this car due to my high highway usage, but its fuel efficiency is low. Should I consider switching to a more fuel-efficient car that also offers decent safety? Please suggest.

Yes, while the Mahindra XUV 3XO's turbo-petrol engines are punchy and exciting, they are not known to be the most fuel-efficient in real-world usage. You could definitely consider more fuel-efficient cars in a similar price range, but since your usage is largely on the highway, you want some punch too.
Check out the Skoda Kylaq, whose 1.0 turbo petrol engine has enough grunt when you need it but can also be efficient when you're just cruising. It's also a safe car, having scored a 5-star Bharat NCAP crash test rating. Plus, it has excellent highway composure and comfort, which should help make light work of long journeys.

I currently own a 2015 Hyundai Elite i20 in Kolkata, and it has done around 1.10 lakh km. I want to buy a new car with an automatic transmission, and my budget is around ₹14-15 lakh. I have shortlisted the Skoda Kyalq, Kia Sonet, and XUV 3XO. I plan to keep this car for the next 10 years, and most of my driving will be within the city (70% city and 30% highway). Please suggest which car I should opt for.

While all three compact SUVs are impressive in their own separate ways, your best bet here is the Skoda Kylaq. Its 1.0 TSI engine and 6-speed automatic combination is smooth, which should come in handy around town. It's also very spacious and comfortable, and even quite a lot of fun to drive. When you go out on the highway, it's reassuringly stable and rides comfortably, too.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO has many of these traits too, but its engine, while powerful, isn't as smooth, refined or efficient as the Skoda's, and it has a tiny boot. The Sonet is starting to show its age, and its rear seat is very cramped. Plus, around town, its DCT gearbox can be quite jerky, and ride quality is firm too.

I am planning to buy a new car in April/May with an on-road budget of ₹15-20 lakh. I am confused between the Mahindra 3XO AX7L, Tata Sierra Adventure Plus, and the new Kia Seltos HTX, all with automatic turbo engines. My monthly running will be 400-600 km within Mumbai city, with 4-5 occasional highway trips a year. Since Sierra and Seltos are not yet available for test drives, I am unsure which to choose. Please guide me.

Between the three cars you have shortlisted, the Tata Sierra Adventure Plus is the nicest, especially because of its turbo-petrol engine and torque converter (automatic) combination. Its powertrain will feel smooth, refined and powerful, good for city and highway driving, both.

The Kia Seltos turbo's dual-clutch automatic can feel a bit jerky at low speeds or in bumper-to-bumper traffic conditions. If your usage is mainly in the city, opt for the 1.5L petrol-IVT instead, which is a far smoother option.

Since you have the budget, and don't mind opting for a larger car, we'd rule out the Mahindra XUV 3XO as the Sierra Turbo-AT or Seltos 1.5 Petrol-IVT deliver a more premium overall experience.

I am planning to buy a new SUV that should be automatic petrol (not AMT). My monthly running is only about 200 km, and my budget is ₹12 lakh. Please suggest an automatic SUV that fits my requirements.

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza AT VXI is a sensible choice, though it's a bit out of your budget. The Brezza isn't exciting to drive, but it delivers reasonable performance and fuel economy and also scores well for ride comfort. The cabin is also practical and roomy.

If you want something more exciting, you have the option of the Mahindra XUV 3XO Petrol AT MX3, the Skoda Kylaq AT Signature, and the Maruti Suzuki Fronx Turbo AT Zeta. The 3XO feels strong and offers the most room for five passengers, if that's a requirement.

The Skoda Kylaq is most enjoyable to drive thanks to its fun handling and punchy engine. Maruti's Fronx Turbo strikes a good balance between performance and fuel economy.

I want to purchase a new any automatic diesel car budget of 13 lacs. My running is approx 1200-1500 Km in a month. 70 % in city and 30% in in highway. Please suggest suitable options for me.

There are only two options that would meet your requirements of a diesel automatic and under Rs 13 lakhs. These are the Mahindra XUV 3XO and the Tata Nexon. It would be nice to know a bit more about your requirements to pinpoint one.

The Tata Nexon is a good option, as fuel efficiency is very important for you, as its efficiency is higher than the 3XO. In our real-world tests, we got an average of 18kpl for the Nexon and 15.5kpl for the Mahindra.

If, however, driving pleasure and interior space are important, then you would be better off in the 3XO. The engine is refined and delivers good performance. Also, the car is spacious from inside, especially at the rear, where you will find more passenger room than in the Nexon.
