I'm confused between the Skoda Kushaq, Kia Seltos and Honda Elevate. I have a budget of Rs 21 lakh ex-showroom. I am hesitant about the Kushaq because the general opinion online is that German cars are expensive to maintain and lose resale value rapidly. It also does not have a factory-fitted 360-degree camera and lacks ADAS features. The Seltos has pretty much everything, but I have observed poor build quality in Kia cars in the past. The Elevate seems like a very attractive car from all angles, but the lack of a 360-degree camera and poor reviews of its ADAS have left me undecided. I am not sure if I need to worry about these features while buying a car, given that my wife and I are both new drivers. She has just learnt, while I have been driving since 2012 but have not driven much and lack experience. Our commute is primarily in the city in Bengaluru, mostly on weekends, with a 70:30 city-highway split. I am planning to keep the car for 10-15 years for a family of four. I have previously driven an 800 (manual), Brio (manual) and Kwid (AMT), and I love the Brio's driving quality.

Go for the Honda Elevate CVT, as it is the most sensible choice. The naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with the CVT is smooth, reliable and easy to drive, which is exactly what you need as relatively new drivers. Honda’s reputation for long-term reliability and low maintenance costs also aligns perfectly with your needs, and you liked the Brio that you drove, so this feels like a logical upgrade. The Skoda Kushaq is a great driver’s car, but your concerns about higher maintenance costs and resale value are not entirely unfounded. Its turbocharged engines do require a bit of a learning curve to drive smoothly and efficiently compared to the naturally aspirated petrol engines of the others. The Kia Seltos is feature-rich, and while build quality issues aren't really an issue, what might be is its size, which could be a bit too large for urban Bengaluru use, considering you are both new drivers. The Honda car mentioned above may not have a 360-degree camera, but that is not a deal-breaker. The most important thing is that the Elevate offers a stress-free ownership experience, which is far more valuable over 10-15 years than a few extra features. The Elevate is also a comfortable family car with a spacious cabin and good ride quality, which makes it well-suited for a family of four and will be easy to drive for relative novices.

Is the Creta going to get a facelift? Will the facelifted model come with a hybrid? Will it be the same as the Seltos, or will it be different? When will the new Creta come? Should I wait for the new Creta or buy the new Seltos?

Verified

The Hyundai Creta received a major facelift in 2024, so the next all-new generation is expected around 2027. There is no official confirmation of a hybrid powertrain for the next Creta yet, but Hyundai is developing hybrid technology for India, so it is possible that the next-generation Creta could offer a hybrid option. The Creta and Seltos are built on the same platform and share engines, but Hyundai and Kia tune their cars differently. The Creta is positioned as the more comfort-oriented option, while the Seltos feels slightly more premium and offers marginally better rear seat space. If you need a car now, buy the Seltos. It is a very well-rounded product and you will not regret the decision. If you are not in a hurry and are specifically interested in a hybrid powertrain, it may be worth waiting for the next-generation Creta. Otherwise, there is no strong reason to delay your purchase.

Is the Creta going to get a facelift? Will it be similar to the new Seltos? Will it come with a hybrid powertrain? Is it worth waiting for the new Creta, or should I buy the current Seltos?

The Hyundai Creta is not due for a facelift but instead an all-new generation, likely in early 2027. It will be a ground-up redesign with a new platform, the same K3 used on the new Seltos, and that includes its next-gen electric and electronic architecture, with NVIDIA-powered screens. The powertrains are expected to remain the same: 1.5 petrol, 1.5 turbo petrol, and 1.5 diesel, with manual and automatic options. However, there will be a hybrid too, and we hear that Hyundai is working hard to launch the new Creta with this powertrain. If not, it will be launched shortly after. If you are in a hurry, consider the Kia Seltos instead, as it is essentially the same car underneath as the new Creta will be. It, however, does not have the hybrid powertrain either. It is currently one of the most complete packages in the segment, with a premium interior, strong feature list and a well-rounded ownership experience. Waiting for the next-generation Creta only makes sense if you are not in a hurry or are really keen on getting the hybrid powertrain.

I’m currently driving a Honda City MT i-VTEC as my daily driver in the city, but I’m not happy with its mileage. My daily usage in the city is around 20-30 km. I’ve shortlisted the Kia Seltos MT Diesel and MG Windsor. Please suggest which of these would be the better choice. Thanks.

With a daily city usage of 20-30 km, a diesel Seltos is not the right choice. Modern diesels need regular highway runs to keep the DPF healthy, and your usage pattern is predominantly short city trips. The fuel savings from diesel will also take a very long time to justify the higher purchase cost at your running. If you can arrange for home charging, the MG Windsor EV seems to be a better fit for your usage. This MG car is a very spacious, comfortable family car with a premium feel. Since your usage isn't much, you could consider the small battery version instead of the Pro - it'll be more affordable.

Hello, I have been using a Creta manual for the past 11 years. I have now sold my Creta and am planning to buy a Seltos automatic. Please suggest which automatic variant would be better for me - petrol or diesel. My annual running is around 10,000- 12,000 km. Should I go for the diesel or petrol automatic?

Verified

With 10,000-12,000 km a year, the decision between petrol and diesel comes down to your usage pattern. Sure, a diesel automatic will be a bit more economical to run; however, you are paying a higher premium upfront. Hence, we'd suggest you pick the Kia Seltos 1.5 Petrol IVT version, which is smoother, quieter and easier to live with in stop-start traffic, and you will not have to worry about DPF-related issues that can arise with modern diesels if the car is not regularly driven on periodic highway runs.Pick the diesel automatic only if you do regular highway runs for its stronger performance and more effortless cruising ability. The diesel's fuel efficiency will be better too.
