The Toyota Glanza premium hatchback was the first rebadged Maruti model sold in India by Toyota, and now following the launch of the second-generation Maruti Baleno, we have the second-generation Glanza. It no longer gets a mild hybrid engine but instead a new-generation 1.2 petrol engine with engine stop/start. Transmission choices are either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. There is clever use of black cladding and chrome at the front to help differentiate it from its badge-engineered counterpart, the Maruti Baleno. Safety has taken a step up too, with as many as six airbags in top spec.

The second-generation Toyota Glanza does a much better job of distinguishing itself from its Suzuki counterpart. The new 1.2-litre engine is peppy and the ride quality from the all-new suspension is superb. That said, it's a shame you don't get any more engine options like some rivals - or the previous Glanza - offered, and the move from a CVT to AMT auto gearbox feels like a step backwards. The added safety and new equipment are sure to be a big draw for buyers, and move this, alongside the Baleno, to near the top of the premium hatchback segment.
