The GLA is the smallest of the Mercedes SUVs. Along with the A-Class Limousine, it completes the brand's two-pronged attack at the entry-level luxury space, and like that car, it is based on the brand's second-generation MFA platform. It is available in GLA 200 petrol guise, GLA 220d diesel guise - in both 2WD and AWD guises, and the range-topping 300hp AMG GLA 35 form for those looking for a performance crossover. The Mercedes GLA rivals the BMW X1, Mini Countryman, Volvo XC40 and Audi Q2 in India.

Unlike its predecessor, the second-gen GLA is far bolder, more upright and more SUV-like in its appearance, which is sure to go down well with buyers. You also get far more room inside now, especially in the back seat, and cabin quality, luxury ambience and equipment has taken a huge leap forward; though there are still a few key items missing from the list. The new-gen powertrains are a huge leap forward too, and even though the GLA 200 petrol now uses 'just' a 1.3-litre turbo engine, it doesn't feel out of its depth. The 220d is the pick, however, offering effortless performance, and the option of all-wheel drive. The AMG GLA 35 is not as raucous as the last-gen's GLA 45, but that's just as well, as it provides ample performance in an accessible package, and since it's locally assembled, a more affordable one too.
