I am planning to buy a luxury SUV, and my budget is between Rs 1.4 and 1.6 crore. I am mainly confused between the Range Rover Sport, Mercedes GLS, and BMW X7. Which one would be the best choice?

The Range Rover Sport is the one Iโ€™d steer you towards. While all three SUVs are highly capable and deliver the luxury and performance youโ€™d expect at this price point, the Range Rover Sport stands apart in a few key areas. Its design has an undeniable sense of occasion - understated yet distinctive - and it carries a level of road presence the German SUVs canโ€™t quite match. The cabin feels properly special too, with exquisite materials, a minimalist layout and a plushness that immediately sets it apart.
Out on the road, the Range Rover Sport blends performance and comfort exceptionally well. The ride quality is superb, gliding over bad patches with an effortlessness that makes long journeys genuinely relaxing.
Yes, the Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7 are both extremely competent and offer more seats and practicality, but they lack the sense of class and emotional appeal that the Range Rover delivers so naturally.
If your priority is an SUV that not only performs but also feels luxurious, distinctive and a cut above in terms of desirability, the Range Rover Sport is the clear choice.

I currently own a BMW X5 and love it, but Iโ€™m thinking of switching. I tested the Land Rover Defender a few years ago - it looked great, but felt too uncomfortable. Has its comfort improved? Iโ€™m not interested in the GLE because it lacks a sporty feel. Could you recommend some options that combine comfort, performance, and a sporty edge?

The Land Rover Defender hasn't undergone any mechanical changes since its launch, so it is unlikely its ride comfort will be any different from what you experienced. With large SUVs like these, as I'm sure you know from your X5, wheel size and suspension choice also have a huge bearing.

Air-suspended Defenders ride significantly better than steel-sprung ones in our experience, so make sure you have tried both before making your decision. It isn't particularly sporty, though, and if that is what you're after, you might want to consider moving a bit higher up and checking out the Audi Q8, Porsche Cayenne or Range Rover Sport.

I want to upgrade my car. My budget is around 80-90 lacs, and I'm considering the GLC 300, X3 and the Velar (I prefer SUVs over sedans). I've also been suggested to consider the Porsche Macan, but I believe with the add-ons the costing will 1+ cr. My apprehension with the Velar is the reliability and the maintenance costs. My running is around 1000-1200 km p.m. and will be self-driven.

Both the Land Rover Range Rover Velar and the Porsche Macan will run you close to Rs 1 crore on road. Moreover, the Macan is showing its age now and is quite cramped on the inside, though it remains the best SUV to drive among your shortlist.
Yes, Land Rovers are plagued with a history of poor and expensive service, but there have been great improvements in recent years, more so since local assembly has begun, and parts are not as hard to come by.
Though more conventional, the Mercedes-Benz GLC and BMW X3 are safer bets and offer more bang for your buck. Of the two, it's the GLC that feels like the best all-rounder.

Iโ€™m looking to buy a luxury SUV and have shortlisted the Range Rover Velar, BMW X5 and Volvo XC90. Iโ€™m also considering something from Mercedesโ€‘Benz. Which one would you suggest?

Without knowing your specific requirements, it is hard to give you a definitive pick. Of the options on your mind, the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE make for the most well-rounded luxury SUVs. They are spacious, well-equipped, comfortable and good to drive.

The Range Rover Velar is big on style but isn't as roomy as the other SUVs. The Volvo XC90's firm ride and lesser refinement mark it down.

Among the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, and Land Rover Velar, which is the better choice overall?

Though they fall in a similar price range, these SUVs offer very different propositions. The Range Rover Velar is primarily focused on style. It has sleek looks, a low roof and a minimalist interior with high-quality materials.

However, it is not as practical or spacious as the others. The cabin is smaller, and it only gets five seats. It is also the only one of the three to offer a diesel engine. Overall, it feels better from the driverโ€™s seat than the rear seat.

The Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90 are larger SUVs with 5+2 seating. The third row is best for kids, but it still adds some extra practicality. The Q7 uses a 340hp, 3.0-litre V6 turbo-petrol engine, which offers more effortless power. The XC90 uses a 250hp, 2.0-litre 4-cyl mild-hybrid petrol engine, which is more fuel-efficient. The Volvo also offers more features than the Audi.

All three are excellent SUVs, so the best choice depends on your specific needs and preferences.

I want to upgrade my car. My budget is 60 to 80 lakhs. What will be your advice. Land Rover Discovery sports diesel or BMW X1 or BMW X3 or shall I wait for Audi q5 to come. Or can I look for meridian

Without knowing your exact requirements, itโ€™s hard to suggest one outright. Among the options youโ€™ve listed, the BMW X3 is the newest and offers the most features, though itโ€™s also the most expensive. The Land Rover Discovery Sport has the advantage of a third row of seats, though itโ€™s best suited for children. The BMW X1 will be the easiest to drive in the city. The next-gen Audi Q5 is still some time away, with its launch expected around 2026. The Jeep Meridian, meanwhile, wonโ€™t feel as premium or as refined as the other options youโ€™ve mentioned.

I want to upgrade my car and have a budget of โ‚น60-80 lakhs. Should I go for the Land Rover Discovery Sport Diesel, BMW X1, BMW X3, wait for the upcoming Audi Q5, or consider the Jeep Meridian?

In your budget, it's best to go for the BMW X3, although you might have to stretch by Rs 2-3 lakh. It is the newest SUV, offering a strong 2.0-litre diesel engine, plus the latest tech and a spacious and comfortable cabin. The Discovery Sport is a capable car, but it is quite old now and its age shows; if you need a third row of seats, however, do consider it. The X1, in comparison, is a segment below and offers less powerful engines and, of course, less space. The new Audi Q5 launch is some time away, and while it is capable, note that it will only come in petrol guise, not diesel. You could also consider the Mercedes-Benz GLC, whose 2.0-litre diesel is also strong, and it offers a spacious and luxurious cabin as well.
