Mahindra officially superseded Hyundai as India’s second-largest-selling automaker in February 2025, thanks to booming SUV sales. With 50,420 SUVs sold last month, Mahindra saw a healthy year-on-year growth of 19 percent in domestic automobile sales.

Mahindra and Hyundai sales in February 2025
Mahindra’s overall automobile sales, including exports, tallied up to 83,702 vehicles in February 2025, of which 50,420 were domestic sales. This marks a 15 percent year-on-year increase for Mahindra and follows the company’s impressive 18 percent growth, with 50,659 passenger vehicles sold domestically in January.
For February 2025, Hyundai reported total automobile sales of 58,727 units, of which 47,727 were sold domestically. Compared to Hyundai’s 65,603 total unit sales and 54,003 domestic unit sales in January 2025, last month’s performance marked a decline across the board for the Korean manufacturer.
Hyundai and Mahindra see promising export performance
Mahindra saw an incredible 99 percent year-on-year increase in exports, with 3,061 units shipped internationally in February 2025. Meanwhile, Hyundai's export volume was substantially higher at 11,000 units, but its year-on-year growth was relatively lower at 6.8 percent.
Mahindra SUV launches in 2024 outpaced those of Hyundai
Throughout 2024, Mahindra launched a plethora of new and updated SUV models, such as the Thar Roxx, XUV 3XO, and Bolero Neo Plus. The company also kicked off its EV line-up with offerings like the BE 6 and XEV 9e. In stark contrast, Hyundai only launched the facelifted Creta and Alcazar last year in terms of new SUV models.
The Creta has an undeniable foothold in the mid-size SUV segment, with other Hyundai SUVs like the Exter, Venue, Tucson, and Alcazar pulling decent numbers for their respective segments. Mahindra, meanwhile, already had various popular SUVs spread out over different segments, like the Thar, XUV700, Bolero, and Scorpio N, prior to the addition of the five new SUV models in 2024.
