Hyundai has introduced a new 1.4-litre petrol engine option for the Verna. The mid-size sedan with the new engine is priced at Rs 7.80 lakh for the base E variant and Rs 9.10 lakh for the mid EX variant (all prices, ex showroom, Delhi). We had reported just days ago how Hyundai would price the 1.4-litre petrol Verna and discontinue the engine on the i20 hatchback.

Notably, with the launch of the 1.4 Verna, the Korean car manufacturer no longer offers the E and EX variant with the option of a 1.6-litre petrol. Hyundai continues to offer the 1,591cc unit on the EX (automatic), SX (manual) and SX(O) [manual + automatic].

The introduction of the lower displacement petrol engine has made the Verna affordable by Rs 20,000 (now discontinued base 1.6 E variant was on sale for Rs 7.99 lakh) and Hyundai hopes to attain a boost in sales with the cheaper 1.4-litre version. Volumes dropped to 1,953 units in December 2017 from over 6,000 vehicles in September 2017, when it had outsold key rivals Honda City and Maruti Ciaz.

The 1.4-litre petrol in the Verna puts out 100hp at 6,000rpm and a torque rating of 132Nm at 4,000rpm. Hyundai claims an enhanced fuel efficiency of 19.1kpl, up 8 percent. Transmission duties are undertaken by a six-speed manual gearbox.

The 1.4 Hyundai Verna comes with the same equipment as on the 1.6-litre version, with the base E trim getting features such as body coloured bumpers, turn indicators on outside mirrors (electrically foldable), cooled glovebox and tilt steering. The EX variant additionally comes with reverse parking sensors, fog lamps, automatic headlamps, height adjustable driver seat, 5.0-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and USB, steering-mounted audio controls and cruise control.
