Late last year, Toyota previewed its future midsize electric SUV with the Urban SUV concept. It is essentially Toyota’s version of the Maruti eVX, and will also be the Japanese carmaker’s first EV for India. Maruti's EV is set to launch by March 2025, and we can now confirm that Toyota’s version will follow six months later, which means the production version of the Urban SUV concept will hit showrooms in India by September-October 2025.

  2. Will be built by Maruti Suzuki alongside the eVX
  3. Expected to come with two battery pack options with up to 550km range

Toyota Urban electric SUV: what to expect?

Toyota had revealed the Urban SUV concept to be 4,300mm long, 1,820mm wide and 1,620mm tall, which is quite similar to the Maruti eVX. Both models are also expected to share the same 2,700mm wheelbase.

As for its styling, the concept looked quite similar to the newer crop of Toyota EVs such as the bZ compact SUV concept. It has edgy surfaces and wears C-shaped LED daytime running lamps up front, along with a minimalist-looking front bumper. It has flared wheel arches and a typical upright SUV silhouette, with a rugged appeal. The rear end is particularly similar to the eVX; the doors and glass house seem quite familiar, although the rear door handles here are placed on the C-pillar.

And while Toyota did not reveal the interior of the Urban SUV concept, its safe to expect a lot of commonality and parts sharing with the eVX here as well. It will have plenty of space and flexibility thanks to its born-EV skateboard platform, and like its Maruti counterpart, expect it to have a plush interior with an expansive list of creature comforts, safety features and tech.

Toyota Urban electric SUV platform and powertrain

Just like the eVX, the Urban SUV from Toyota will sit on the 27PL skateboard platform that will be heavily localised and built in India at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility, for both export and domestic markets. There will be two battery pack options – a 60kWh unit with about 550km range that was showcased with the eVX concept; an entry-level variant with a smaller 48kWh battery pack and around 400km of range is also expected. Toyota says that the SUV will have both FWD and dual-motor AWD options for some markets.

Upon launch, Toyota’s midsize electric SUV will see competition from the likes of Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv EV as well as its own sibling, the Maruti eVX.
