Citroen has announced that it will offer six airbags as standard on all its models from the second half of 2024. Currently, apart from the C5 Aircross, which is the brand’s flagship model, all other models only come equipped with just two airbags, even in their top-spec guise.

    Citroen safety update

Apart from six airbags, Citroen will also be offering Isofix seat anchorages and rear seatbelt reminders as standard fitment on the C3, eC3 and C3 Aircross. Currently, the safety features on these models includes ABS with EBD and reverse parking sensors and camera. The C3 Aircross additionally gets a tyre pressure monitoring system and hill-hold assist.

Although the fitment of six airbags as standard hasn’t been mandated, there’s been heightened conversation around vehicle safety these days and the government has also been pushing for stricter safety regulations. Carmakers such as Hyundai and Kia have already standardised six airbags across their lineup, and Tata Motors too has been introducing it in a phased manner on most of its models.

Citroen, therefore, is certainly late to introduce this safety update, especially in cars such as the C3 Aircross midsize SUV; it competes in a segment where six airbags is pretty much the norm on top-spec variants. This safety update will be a crucial addition on the said models, which have otherwise been criticised for being sparsely equipped. However, this also means there will be a nominal step up in the prices of all the models.

    Upcoming Citroen launches in 2024

Lately, Citroen has been rationalising its product lineup for more competitive positioning in the market, and recently introduced the automatic gearbox equipped C3 Aircross. An all-electric derivative of the SUV is also expected to launch later this year. Additionally, Citroen also has the C3X coupe-crossover lined up for launch this year. Both these model, therefore, will also come equipped with six airbags right from launch.
