Tata Altroz diesel prices have been quietly reduced to cash in on the swell in demand expected in the run up to the festive season.

  • Mid to higher-spec Tata Altroz diesel variants see a Rs 40,000 price cut
  • Altroz diesel range now priced between Rs 6.99-8.95 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India)
  • Altroz is the only premium hatchback with a diesel engine option, for now

The table below has the revised prices:

A month after hiking the price of the Tata Altroz by up to Rs 15,000, Tata Motors has now slashed prices of the diesel variant by up to Rs 40,0000. This sudden downward price revision is to further stimulate demand and narrow the price gap between the previous BS4 diesel Altroz and the current BS6 variant. “The price jump from BS4 to BS6 was a bit too ambitious and we don’t want to lose the momentum the Altroz has already built up,” said a Tata Motors’ source. Besides, Tata Motors is also bracing itself for the imminent arrival of the next-gen Hyundai i20, which is expected this October.

At the moment, the Altroz diesel is unique in its segment but with the launch of the third-gen i20, which will come with a slew of new engines, including the hugely capable 1.5-litre U2 diesel engine, Tata’s premium hatchback will have a direct rival.

Sales in this segment are heavily skewed towards petrol models, which is why the recently updated Honda Jazz doesn’t come with a diesel engine. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno too will not get a diesel engine after the company abandoned diesels with the move to BS6. Also, the current Hyundai Elite i20 is sold with a petrol engine only. Tata Motors has taken advantage of the absence of competition in the premium diesel hatch segment with Altroz monthly sales touching an all-time high of close to 5,000 units in August 2020.

What else is in store for the Tata Altroz?

Tata will continue to update its premium hatchback with new variants and new powertrain options. As we’ve reported earlier, a Tata Altroz Dark Edition is in the pipeline, a dual-clutch automatic for the Altroz petrol is in the works and there’s even an Altroz turbo-petrol incoming. In addition, the Tata Altroz EV, which was showcased at Auto Expo 2020, is also on the docket. However, a timeline for these launches has yet to be revealed officially.
