I’m planning to buy a bike, but I’m confused between the Harley-Davidson X440t and the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450. My daily commute is around 50 km, mostly on highways. My top priorities are good mileage and long-distance comfort. Which one would you recommend? If you have any other suggestions in the same price range, I’d love to hear them as well.

While the Harley-Davidson X440 T and Royal Enfield Guerrilla are comparable in terms of displacement and price, both are actually very different animals. The X440 T has a long-stroke, air/oil-cooled, torque-rich thumper which really encourages brisk cruising more than attacking corners. The H-D is also the more laidback and comfortable machine, which will be a valuable USP over rough, patchy roads. If ridden gently on the highway, you could see a fuel economy number in the 27-30kpl ballpark. On the other hand, the Guerrilla is a sporty street naked which will delight you with its punchy performance, agility and surefooted handling. Sure, it may not be as comfortable as the X440 T, but in isolation, it is a comfortable enough machine. If you ride sensibly, the Guerrilla can also give you close to 30kpl on the highway, which is pretty decent considering its displacement and performance on offer. Another option you should consider is the 350cc Triumph Speed 400 / Scrambler 400 duo, depending on what sort of look you want and whether or not you can manage the Scrambler's tall 835mm seat height. The Triumphs will sit between the X440 T and Guerrilla in terms of performance and are comfortable machines for longer journeys. Take test rides of all bikes listed to ensure you make an informed decision.

Hi, I am looking to purchase a bike primarily for city commuting, with occasional off-roading and highway riding. I have shortlisted the Triumph Scrambler 400X (350) and the RE Guerrilla 450 based on power, mileage, serviceability, and build quality. I need some help making a final decision, including any additional deal-makers or deal-breakers for either of these two, or suggestions for other suitable options. Thanks!

While the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 may wear dual-purpose tyres, its hardly the ideal machine to take off-roading. Sure, it can tackle a gravelly rough road or a hard-packed trail but beyond that, it will feel out of its element. Think of the Guerrilla as a roadster that doesn't shy away from bad roads when you encounter them but you shouldn't actively go out seeking them. On the flip side, it is going to be fun to ride on the highway and inside the city with its torquey engine and sporty chassis - especially the Apex variant with its more committed riding position and grippier Vredestein Centauro ST tyres. On the other hand, the 350cc Triumph Scrambler 400 X will be more of a jack of all trades sort of bike and will be a great deal more capable off-road. Things to keep in mind here: this Triumph bike has a tall 835mm seat height (a significant 55mm more than the Guerrilla) and its downsized 349cc engine will feel much mellower in comparison to the Guerrilla's punchy 452cc single. While the Scrambler is a decent handling road bike, it cannot match the sportier Guerrilla's handling characteristics and if you spend your time predominantly on the road, the Royal Enfield bike is definitely the better choice. You need to decide whether you're actually going to venture off-road on a routine basis as well as considering the performance they have to offer and then, take a call between these two machines. To help make a decision, a test ride of both would be advisable.

Hello, I want to buy the Triumph Scrambler 400 X. I am quite confused and concerned about its service and maintenance costs, so I would like advice from an expert. Should I go for the Triumph or the RE Guerrilla 450?

Verified

First things first, service and maintenance on both the Triumph Scrambler 400 X and Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 should be light on your wallet. Both bikes are made in India and spares as well as replacement cycle parts are readily available.Coming to choosing between the Scrambler and Guerrilla, that's actually where things get complicated. You see, the Scrambler 400 X is actually powered by a 350cc engine making 40hp/32Nm while the Guerrilla's 452cc single makes 40hp/40Nm. While these bikes seem pretty closely matched in terms of peak power on paper at least, the Royal Enfield bike is sure to have an advantage in the real world with its potent mid range and additional torque. Even in terms of handling, both bikes are likely to have different behaviour. The Guerrilla has fatter tyres compared to the Scrambler which means the Triumph will have better agility and flickability at slower speeds but conversely, the Royal Enfield will be more planted on the side of the tyre. Both bikes are priced similarly and look quite sleek, so choosing between the two will boil down to what your preference is after a detailed test ride.

I booked a KTM Duke 390 on March 22nd, but it has been over 30 days, and the showroom still hasn't received the bike. They currently have no updates on when new stock will arrive. I’ve checked other showrooms across Mumbai and even in neighbouring states, but the bike is out of stock everywhere. Since the delivery is so uncertain, I am now considering alternatives like the TVS RR 310, KTM Duke 250, or the RE Guerrilla 450. Given my 5'10" height and the fact that I need a bike for daily Mumbai traffic, which of these would be the best recommendation?

Since you want a bike that you will be using through chaotic Mumbai traffic, we'd steer you toward the KTM 250 Duke and Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450. Owing to their more upright rider triangles, these bikes will feel easier to ride through traffic and at slower speeds. Of course, neither will have the outright shove of the manic 390, but the Guerrilla comes close. The 250 Duke, while an enjoyable machine, will feel a clear step down in terms of performance from the 390, although you will see good improvements in fuel economy. Instead of the RR 310, we'd recommend you look at the TVS Apache RTR 310, as it is closer in intent and form to the Duke, and with its upright ergonomics and well-judged suspension, it will suit your use case quite well.Take a test ride of these three bikes before you go ahead with your purchase. We'd also urge you to pressure the dealer to deliver the bike. A good plan of action would be to contact the authorised company helpline and expedite the process.

I am 156 cm tall and have tried sitting on the Triumph Speed 400 and Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450. The Triumph Trident is my dream bike, but I would like to start with a 400cc motorcycle first. Which of these two bikes is better for long rides and city commuting?

Verified

Both the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 and the Triumph Speed 400 are excellent first bikes and will serve you well, but they have different riding experiences. The Speed 400 is all about effortless torque and doesn't need a lot of revs to build speed. The Guerrilla 450 also has a punchy midrange, but its engine continues pulling strongly to the redline, and it creates a more engaging riding experience because of that. The Guerrilla also has stiffer suspension, which is great for when you want to attack corners, but over repeated harsh bumps, it can get a little tiring.Take a test ride of both before you decide.

Between the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 and the Triumph Scrambler 400 X, which is better for daily rides and touring?

Verified

As an all-rounder, the Triumph Scrambler 400 X makes more sense because it has a commanding riding position, great suspension comfort, and lovely city manners. However, it feels a bit breathless on the highway beyond 100 kph, so if you don’t ride past that speed often, it’s a great option. On the other hand, the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 is a more engaging bike with better handling on twisty roads due to its wider tyres and 17-inch front wheel. It also feels more at home when doing fast highway speeds.

Please reply, Autocar. I am planning to upgrade from Hunter 350. I have shortlisted three bikes: the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450, Triumph Speed 400, and Triumph Scrambler 400 X (though I’m concerned about its height). My height is 5'3 tall with an inseam of 28. I planned for ADV, but due to a lack of confidence with height, I am not sure whether it would be the right choice. So, I request you to give me practical advice. My budget is ₹3.3 lakh.

Since you haven't specified what sort of riding you're planning to do, it will be a little difficult to guide you accurately. In our experience, the Triumph Speed 400 is a lovely city bike and can comfortably go on the highway too, as long as you don't cross 110kph.The Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 is also a credible option with good versatility, but its suspension can feel a little stiffer initially. We recommend a thorough test ride of both of these before you choose. The Triumph Scrambler 400 X will feel quite tall, and if you're not confident, stick to the other two approachable roadsters.

We already have a Royal Enfield Classic 350 at home, and I want to buy something different. My daily commute is around 50km, travelling between home and the office. I don't enjoy long-distance touring, and my budget is around 3 lakh. I'm confused between the Royal Enfield Meteor 350, Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450, Harley-Davidson X440 Vivid, and the Triumph Speed 400.

Since you already have a RE Classic 350 at home, we'd recommend you remove the Meteor 350 and Harley-Davidson X440 from your shortlist because these bikes will feel quite similar to your Classic. The 350cc Triumph Speed 400 and Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 will offer a more engaging riding experience with more performance and features on tap, and are the ones we'd advise you to choose between. Of the two, the Triumph bike has the more mellow nature, but it will still feel like a good step up from your Classic in terms of performance and handling. The Guerrilla, on the other hand, is quite excitable and of the two, this is definitely the more fun machine. Its suspension is a little taut, which enables it to have very engaging handling, but over bad roads, you will feel a little more of the road surface coming through to your back. The RE also has a crisper, more tech-laden TFT display, whereas the Triumph uses a simple digi-analogue unit.Take a test ride of both before you make your decision, since they are quite different to ride.

I am planning to buy the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 by the end of next year for my daily office commute from Delhi to Gurugram, which is around 20 km one way. Buying it is partly a childhood dream, but I also want to be practical. Is it the right choice? What other options should I consider, and what factors should I keep in mind? I am 38 years old.

Verified
1w

The Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 is a sporty roadster that is good fun daily, and it's reasonably practical and comfortable for commuting duties too. Whether this is the right choice for you is a question only you can answer, and the way we'd recommend you go about it is to take a test ride of the bike and see if it fits into your orbit. Some points to bear in mind in traffic: the Guerrilla's clutch is a little heavy, and its engine's bottom end is a little weak. But on the flip side, it has a punchy mid and top-end and its handling is very engaging and surefooted too. If you want to consider a more commuter-friendly alternative to the Guerrilla, try out the 350cc Triumph Speed 400, which doesn't have as much outright performance, but it's better suited to commute on and is also more comfortable. A test ride of these two should help you determine which is the better fit for you. Do write back if you think neither is a good fit, and we'll be happy to recommend different options!

Which bike do I choose between the new 390 ADV, Duke 390 or Guerrilla 450? I am upgrading from Meteor 350 and want a comfortable ride with a little more performance.

Verified
4w

Since you have said you want comfort, we'd recommend you rule out the KTM 390 Duke. The Duke can be usable on a day-to-day basis, but it is a stiffly sprung and sporty machine that's also rather cramped for taller folks and especially coming from the Meteor, could prove too uncomfortable. The Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 is a good choice, which will balance performance and comfort, although there will be a short adjustment period for you before you completely gel with it. We'd recommend going for the Apex variant, which comes with grippier Vredestein rubber that is better than the standard variant's CEAT shoes. The KTM 390 Adventure is a great bike for long-distance travelling, and if that is going to be the main reason behind your purchase, then it makes sense. However, inside the city, it can feel a little too buzzy, and its fuel economy isn't great either. Do bear in mind that KTMs comes with stiff seats and you will either have to adapt to it or get it fixed in the aftermarket.Since you are already considering the 390 Adventure, it would make sense to also look at the Himalayan 450. This is the more rounded of the two machines in our experience, and its ride comfort is unparalleled at this price point. Its size and weight will take some getting used to, but if you are okay with it, then this is a machine definitely worth considering.Take test rides of all before you go ahead with your purchase, so you make an informed decision.
