EV sales in India have crossed 1 lakh units in the first eight months of 2025 and have been rising steadily year on year. While some mass-market carmakers like Tata already offer a bevy of electric cars to choose from and are looking to expand their line-ups, others like Maruti are yet to foray into the segment. Here, we list the 5 most anticipated EV launches.
Maruti e Vitara
49kWh and 61kWh battery options will be on offer.
It’s well-known that the Maruti e Vitara’s India launch has been delayed. However, considering that it has launched in the UK launch and production has commenced at Suzuki’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, it shouldn’t be too long a wait until the EV’s price for our market is announced. Most details about Maruti’s first electric car are known – the India-spec e Vitara will have 49kWh and 61kWh battery pack options, with the latter having an MIDC-claimed range of 500km. While the international-spec model has front-wheel drive and AWD options, the e Vitara for India is expected to have just front-wheel drive.
The features list on the top-spec variant is expected to include a panoramic display comprising a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an electronic parking brake with auto hold, 3 drive modes (Eco, Normal and Sport), single-zone auto climate control, ventilated front seats, a 10-way powered driver’s seat, reclining and split-folding rear seats, 7 airbags and Level 2 ADAS.
Toyota Urban Cruiser EV
Battery and powertrain to be shared with the e Vitara.
Showcased along with the e Vitara at Auto Expo 2025 was the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV. Essentially a badge-engineered version of the Maruti EV, the Urban Cruiser will follow its sibling to the market. Like several other shared Toyota and Maruti models, the EVs will roll out of the same plant and share their platform, battery and powertrain – they are likely to have the same ARAI range figures as well. However, they have unique exteriors and interiors for differentiation.
Tata Sierra EV
Likely to be positioned between the Curvv EV and Harrier EV.
The Tata Sierra EV is expected to arrive in the coming months to take on the Hyundai Creta Electric, MG ZS EV and Mahindra BE 6. While Tata Motors has not revealed battery specifications, range or other technical details yet, hardware is likely to be shared with its other electric models like the Harrier EV. The launch of the Sierra EV will see the carmaker’s electric car portfolio increase to 7 models, with the new EV expected to be positioned above the Curvv EV but below the Harrier EV.
The latest Sierra concept showcased by Tata sported three screens – a digital instrument cluster, along with central and passenger-side infotainment touchscreens – all likely to be 12.3-inch units. Other expected interior highlights include a four-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo and ambient lighting. The Sierra will likely come in 4- and 5-seater versions.
Hyundai Inster-based EV
Will take on the Tata Punch EV.
Hyundai is set to bring its Tata Punch EV rival to the market by late 2026. The electric compact SUV, codenamed HE1i, is based on the Inster EV sold abroad and is expected to roll out of Hyundai’s Sriperumbudur factory with localised batteries from Exide. In international markets, the Inster EV is available with 42kWh and 49kWh battery options that can drive either a front axle-mounted 97hp motor or a 115hp motor. WLTP range figures are 300km for the smaller battery and 355km for the larger unit. The features list is expected to include dual 10.25-inch displays for the instrument panel and touchscreen infotainment, Level 2 ADAS, auto climate control and a 360-degree camera with blind-spot monitoring.
Kia Syros EV
Will rival the Tata Nexon EV.
Expected to launch in India by March 2026, the Syros EV was spied testing for the first time just last month. The images showed that the all-electric Kia Syros will retain most of the ICE model’s design but have a charging port mounted on the front right fender, among other EV-specific changes. Interestingly, the spied model also had green brake calipers, which Kia usually reserves for performance-oriented models like the EV9 GT. The interior and features list are also expected to be shared between the Syros and its all-electric counterpart.
There’s no official word from Kia on the Syros EV’s technical specifications, but this Tata Nexon EV rival is said to share its K1 platform with the India-spec Hyundai Inster (see above) and have a front-wheel-drive layout. The battery options are also likely to be shared between the Kia and Hyundai EVs.
