Tesla has selected two showroom sites in India, Reuters reported while quoting anonymous sources. These include a space in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex and a leased area in Delhi’s Aerocity. Both are near the airport. The automaker had restarted looking for retail outlets here in 2024 after putting market-entry plans on hold in 2022.

Elon Musk meets PM Modi
Reuters stated that these showrooms will be about 5,000 square feet in size. Notably, the latest developments follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Tesla CEO Elon Musk last week in the United States. Just this week, Tesla advertised it is hiring for 14 roles, including store and customer relationship managers.
Autocar India could not ascertain the opening dates of these showrooms. One of the sources told Reuters that Tesla plans “to sell imported EVs in India…these deals are for showrooms, not service centres”, adding that the Musk-led company will run these outlets.
Tesla India production plans
Maharashtra may become a manufacturing hub for Tesla in India, according to an Economic Times report. Tesla has an office in Pune along with multiple suppliers, and the state government has offered the automaker sites in Chakan and Chikhali (both in Pune district), the newspaper stated, citing sources. Major car brands like Tata Motors, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen already have production facilities in Chakan.
